500 Free Tickets Offered To Hear Al Gore
BOISE, Idaho (Idagolocalnews)
Five-hundred high school students will be able to attend for free the January 22nd speech by former Vice President Al Gore in Taco Bell Arena at Boise State University.
SunCor Idaho made a two-thousand five-hundred dollar contribution to The Frank Church Institute, which is sponsoring the event.
Students from area high schools can present a school activity card at the Select-A-Seat box office at the arena to get a ticket.
One ticket per student will be given for the sold out speech.
SunCor Development Company is based in Arizona and builds commercial and residential properties.

Veterans Day faces expulsion by schools
TRENTON, N.J. (Washington Times)
For World War II veteran Sam Stia, a legislative proposal that would cease requiring New Jersey schools to teach about Veterans Day and Memorial Day can be summed up in two words.

“That’s wrong,” Mr. Stia, 83, said from his Hamilton home, where he flies an American flag at half-staff to honor fallen soldiers. “We’re just giving our flag away and our patriotism away.”

Mr. Stia and other veterans are steamed about the proposal, which state lawmakers unanimously passed last month. It now awaits action by the governor. It was included as part of a larger measure designed to help control property taxes, mostly by abolishing some laws on school purchasing and public hearings.
Other holidays about which schools no longer would be required to teach include Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Arbor Day and Commodore Barry Day, which commemorates Revolutionary War hero John Barry.
New Jersey schools must observe the holidays under a 1967 law designed to promote “the development of a higher spirit of patriotism.” Florida, Nebraska and Washington are among states with similar laws.
New Jersey American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars groups have asked Gov. Jon Corzine to veto the bill so schools still have to teach about Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

“It’s not right. They’re not going to know the sacrifices that were made so they can enjoy the protections that they have,” said Hank Adams, New Jersey VFW adjutant and an Army and Coast Guard veteran. The governor hasn’t decided how to proceed. “We’re reviewing that bill,” Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley said.

“The law wouldn’t ban schools from holding holiday commemorations, but requiring schools to honor the days guarantees children would learn about veterans,” said Ray Zawacki, department adjutant for the American Legion of New Jersey.

“If it wasn’t for veterans, we wouldn’t have been able to maintain the freedoms the Constitution provided to us,” said Mr. Zawacki, a Vietnam War Navy veteran.

Yesterday Nick was in a store and he asked one of the kids that had the day off from school, did they know what Veterans Day was. The teenager said no, but today is Martin Luther King Day. WTF!!!!!!!
Teachers are teaching, not all but way too many are not teaching. Oh kids know how to protest our troops and get the day off from school to do that as I have posted about that before. BUT GOd forbid they are taught why they live in the land of the free. DAMN!
And so many parents aren’t teaching their kids either about Veterans Day and Memorial Day. It makes me sick!!

Muslim-only kitchen kit for jails

JAILS are spending thousands on colour-coded kitchen tools for Muslims, it was revealed last night.
They are getting special red handled equipment to prepare Halal meals.
The move comes after an MPs’ committee recommended more should be done to meet the needs of Muslim prisoners.
So far 900 kits — costing £500 to £800 — have gone to jails across the UK.
The Koran prohibits eating pig meat, which is considered unclean. So the serving spoons, ice cream scoops and ladles are kept in special locked chests to prevent contamination by those used for other inmates.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “A comprehensive policy is in place for all aspects of Halal products including storage, cooking and service.”

North conducts emergency drill of top security

Several security organs directly in charge of the safety of North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-il, conducted an emergency drill in Pyongyang on Friday, intelligence sources from South Korea and the United States said.
Military troops and tanks from the Pyongyang Defense Command were deployed rapidly while increased military communications were noted that day.
In addition, the Escort Bureau, in charge of protecting Mr. Kim, also had a busy day, the sources said. The incident sparked a flurry of activity by the South’s intelligence community, as the increased military activity in the North’s capital did not fit the usual pattern of winter drills conducted by the North’s military.
The fact that security organs closely guarding the North’s leader’s safety were involved in the activities sparked momentary suspicion among some sources that a military coup might have occurred in the North.
By the end of the day, however, intelligence officials here concluded that the drill was to prepare for any unforeseen changes inside the power structure of Kim Jong-il’s inner circle.
A source familiar with the circumstances said, “We have confirmed that the activities pertained not to a real situation but were part of a drill to respond to a possible scenario.”
The source added that the situation did not require an emergency meeting by authorities in the South.
Nevertheless, intelligence officials said that drills of this kind rarely happen in the North.

Murtha proposes bill to choke funding for surge

Rep. John P. Murtha, Pennsylvania Democrat, yesterday announced plans to introduce legislation that would cut off funding for President Bush’s proposed surge of American troops into Baghdad.

“I think our hearings will show that even Republicans will vote with us when the bill finally comes up,” Mr. Murtha, chairman of the Appropriations defense subcommittee, said during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”

Mr. Murtha said that he doesn’t think Democrats can stop Mr. Bush from instituting the first wave of a troop surge, but that his panel will be able to pass legislation to stop further waves within a month. “I don’t know how many troops they can get in the field before we get our bill up and passed in the Congress,” he said.

But Mr. Murtha told ABC, “We’re going to have extensive hearings, and we’re going to look at exactly how much money he has.”

“And we’re going to try to change the direction of this war,” he said.

White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters last week that Mr. Bush already has the funds needed to support a troop surge. “Funding for the forces and to dispatch them to the region, it’s already in the budget,” he said. “So we’re going to proceed with those plans.”

Several Democrats, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, have proposed a nonbinding “disapproval” of a surge.

California Muslim Arrested after Threat to ‘Kill All Jews’
PALM SPRINGS A 35-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly made terrorist threats inside a Palm Springs bar, police said.
Officers detained Haider Mohammad of Palm Springs about 8 p.m. Friday at the Hair of the Dog Bar at 238 North Palm Canyon after he allegedly said he was going to “kill all Jews,” said Palm Springs Police Sgt. Mitch Spike.
According to witnesses, Mohammad also allegedly claimed to have an alliance with executed former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and to be affiliated with al-Qaeda.
Mohammad was detained on suspicion of making terrorist threats in what was called a hate crime, Spike said. FBI investigators who were contacted by Palm Springs police determined that Mohammad was not a person of interest, he said.
Mohammad was booked at the Palm Springs jail and released after posting $25,000 bail.

I would assume that there are levels of how much a person would be a person of interest but my gosh at least don’t label this jerk and NOT a person of interest. “Not a person of interest,” eh? The Republican arguing with power-hungry Barney Frank is Patrick McHenry. McHenry rose to offer an amendment that would exempt American Samoa from the stem-cell bill — a clear dig at the fact that Samoa, which is home to StarKist factories that employ nearly 75% of the island’s work force, was conspicuously exempt from the minimum-wage bill that had passed the day before. Why is that important? Because StarKist is a branch of Del Monte Foods Co., which has its headquarters in San Francisco, Nancy Pelosi’s district.

The two countries had previously revealed plans for a joint $2 billion fund to finance investments in Venezuela and Iran, but the leaders said Saturday the money would also be used for projects in friendly countries throughout the developing world.

“It will permit us to underpin investments … above all in those countries whose governments are making efforts to liberate themselves from the (U.S.) imperialist yoke,” Chavez said.

“This fund, my brother,” the Venezuelan president said, referring affectionately to Ahmadinejad, “will become a mechanism for liberation.”

“Death to U.S. imperialism!” he said.

Ahmadinejad, who is starting a tour of left-leaning countries in the region, called it a “very important” decision that would help promote “joint cooperation in third countries,” especially in Latin America and Africa.
Chavez and Ahmadinejad have been increasingly united by their deep-seated antagonism toward the Bush administration. Chavez has become a leading defender of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, accusing the Washington of using the issue as a pretext to attack Tehran.

Ahmadinejad, meanwhile, has called Chavez “the champion of the struggle against imperialism.”

Sniper celebrates with cigar after killing Taliban officer

A ROYAL Marine sniper from Edinburgh has described marking his first kill with a cigar after “slotting” a Taliban commander from more than 1000 metres.
Crackshot Royal Marine (45 Commando) sniper Dallas Turner, 27, was among the soldiers who described their dramatic stories in their own words.

He said: “We were down in Garmsir southern Helmand on December 21 and we were in full view of the Taliban front line.

“They were firing at us all day but we could see only their heads pop up from time to time moving about their positions.

“They were hiding in abandoned compounds in the suburbs. I fired three rounds from an Afghan National Police sangar sentry post but I didn’t hit anyone.

“The next day they the Taliban were back at the same position and one walked into view from behind a wall.

“He was just standing there. It was beautiful. He was only exposed a few seconds. I didn’t need to adjust my rifle sights as they were set right from the previous day. Just like in training, I breathed slowly, inhaled and pulled the trigger. “

“The 338 calibre bullet travels at about 800 metres a second so it would have taken just over a second to reach him. He was hit full in the upper chest. It took him a couple of seconds to drop but I knew he was slotted dead.
“If one of these big 338 rounds hits you in the chest, even from that distance, it will cause a lethal amount of damage.
“I just graduated from sniper school late last year after nine weeks’ training.
“It was my first kill. I had a cigar afterwards. I didn’t lose any sleep about it. He was a Taliban commander after all.”

The Taliban militants were killed and captured after ambushing a joint Nato and Afghan patrol in Mizan district in Zabul province on Sunday, said Younis Akhunzada, the district police chief.
Police also recovered four AK-47 assault rifles and two rocket-propelled grenade.
In a recent four day operation, codenamed Operation Clay, Royal Marine Commandos wiped out a vital Taliban training camp, killing dozens of fighters.
The force succeeded in securing a safe passage to a mountain dam – once the biggest source of electricity in the whole of Afghanistan.
In dramatic scenes caught on army cameras, the Marines engaged Afghan fighters as they waded through a river.
