Viveca Lindfors is wonderful as Christine, whose father (Ludwig Donath) is a street preacher. Together they take in John Burrows (Sterling Hayden), a former pastor who has turned away from God and is now hiding his identity. He has ended up on skid row, and arrested for apparent public intoxication along with Gandy (Thomas Mitchell).
Burrows comes to realize that Christine is blind…. She falls in love with him, enjoying his discussions of the spirit and the soul but knowing little of his past. One day she is struck by a streetcar and knocked unconscious, causing Burrows to once again question his faith. Great ending!
