Harry Reid’s Land Grab Townhall
by Amanda Carpenter
It’s hard to pinpoint the worst part of the public lands legislation bill Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is calling up for an under-the-radar Sunday vote.
The 1200-page, pork-laden, $10 billion proposal locks up millions of acres of energy-rich property by designating it as environmentalist-friendly “federal wilderness” area where not even as much as a bicycle would be permitted to travel across the land. Many of these areas recently became available when the ban on domestic drilling in Western states expired last fall and the liberal left couldn’t muster the courage to keep it in place due to rising energy prices. Now Democratic leaders are using different legislative strategies to put a new kind of ban in place.
One Republican House staffer put it this way: “Reid is going to make it federal land so no one can touch it. He’s locking up the equivalent of ANWR.”
Since the price of gasoline has dropped and attention has diverted to other matters, such as President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration, Leader Reid has made the land grab a priority and is calling members of the Senate back to Washington on Sunday to rush it through.
For example, one piece of the bill that has drawn the ire of the Wall Street Journal is a provision sponsored by Rep. Barney Frank (D.-Mass.). He’d like to make a robust, container shipping port located in his district’s Taunton River into a scenic tourist destination. This would have the liberally convenient side effect of killing a proposal to create a terminal to import liquefied natural gas.

Update:
The U.S. Senate passed the bill Sunday by a vote of 66-12.
Majority Leader Harry Reid was successful in corralling enough votes to advance his $10 billion land grab, despite 17 Republicans who protested the bill by skipping the vote altogether.
Basically, by using “federal wilderness” laws and other environental designations, the Democratic Congress is locking-up energy-rich domestic lands. Instead of putting a new energy ban in place, they are just going to let the federal government absorb them so they’ll never be developed.
66 senators supported the bill over 12 who voted “nay” on it. Not a single Democratic senator voted against it.
Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming would vote on the bill. He supported a provision to prohibit energy exploration in state. He DID vote for the bill. So did Barrasso’s fellow Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi.
Other Republicans who crossed party lines with Barrasso and Enzi to help Reid pass the omnibus were:
Thad Cochran
Susan Collins
Mike Crapo
Orrin Hatch
Richard Lugar
Lisa Murkowski
Jim Risch
Olympia Snowe
Roger Wicker
Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged his colleagues oppose the bill, protesting the way Reid rushed the bill through. His Communications Director Don Stewart told Townhall, “Sen. McConnell is disappointed this parks bill restricts development of energy resources at a time when we should be doing much more to become energy independent. And less than a week after the CBO announced a staggering $1.2 trillion federal deficit, he questions the merits of rushing a bill that commits to spending billions more of taxpayer dollars.”
The bill will now be sent over to the House where it could be significantly amended by House Republicans although they’ll be forced to be very creative. Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently passed a new rules package that took powerful tools away from the minority when it comes to amending legislation.
Wild Thing’s comment…….
The socialists want to control everything possible so they limit the space to exercize freedom, and also stop and future drilling for Oil.
Harry Reid is my enemy, and I am so sick of this slime that he is and the rest of his partners in crime.

The difference between a Democracy and a Republic something so many seem to have forgotten. And the lefties LOVE to use the word, acting like they don’t know the difference. I honeslty think they are doing it on purpopse because they want it to be a democracy and NOT a Repuiblic. Never trust a democrat!
Watch this video and then get the word out to as many people as necessary. This is something all school age children should see. I’ve watched it half a dozen times already trying to memorize some of it.
Israeli army paratroopers take part in the fight against Hamas militants
Israeli army paratroopers Captain Amit Kaufman (R) leads his soldiers in the fight against Hamas militants on January 10
An Israeli mobile artillery unit fires a shell towards Gaza from its position outside the northern Gaza Strip January 10, 2009. Israel pressed on with a punishing Gaza offensive and Hamas fired more rockets into the Jewish state on Saturday
Palestinians gather next to a building used by the Islamic group Hamas after it was hit in an Israeli missile strike in the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City,. Israeli jets and helicopters bombarded Gaza.
IDF: 300 Hamas operatives killed in Gaza The Jesusalem Post
IDF troops in the Gaza Strip on Saturday targeted Hamas operative Amir Mansi, a senior member of Izzadin Kassam, the group’s military wing.
A senior commander of IDF operations in the Strip said that Mansi was the head of the Gaza Strip rocket division, and was previously involved in dozens of rocket attacks against Israel in recent weeks.
He was also known to be a close associate of Hizbullah, and received information from the group on a regular basis.
Mansi was killed while attempting to fire mortars at Givati troops at Jabal Rice, in the northern Gaza Strip. Two other combatants were also hit.
The IDF commander said the fact that Mansi was personally involved in attacking Israeli troops showed that the Hamas military wing was in a serious state of distress, as senior Hamas operatives would not ordinarily venture out into battlefields. The IDF officer also said that entire companies of Hamas had been completely wiped out, and some Hamas fighters had gone AWOL or fled battlefields.
“They are afraid to come out and fight, that’s why Mansi went out to fire rockets on his own,” the officer said.
The officer also said that Hamas had replicated nature reserves that the IDF found in southern Lebanon in 2006, with built-up urban areas in Gaza City. The group was said to have built up tunnel systems in such a manner that if the IDF deepened its operation into the city, it would encounter face-to-face and hand-to-hand resistance. Meanwhile, the IDF announced that at least 300 Hamas operatives have been killed since the ground offensive stage of Operation Cast Lead was launched a week ago. The IDF estimate was backed up by intelligence.
Also Saturday, IAF planes dropped leaflets warning Gaza residents of an escalation in attacks, as southern Israel came under more Palestinian rocket fire.
“The IDF will escalate the operation in the Gaza Strip,” the leaflets said in Arabic. “The IDF is not working against the people of Gaza but against Hamas and the terrorists only. Stay safe by following our orders.”
The leaflets urged Gaza residents not to help Hamas, and to stay away from its members.
The Israeli military said more than 15 terrorists were killed in fighting overnight Friday. It said aircraft attacked more than 40 targets including 10 rocket-launching sites, weapons-storage facilities, smuggling tunnels, an anti-aircraft missile launcher and gunmen.
Seven soldiers were lightly wounded during the operations and taken for medical treatment.
The dropping of the leaflets appeared to be partly a psychological tactic. Defense officials say they are prepared for a third stage of the offensive, in which ground troops would push much further into Gaza, but are still waiting for approval from the government.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were discussing classified information, said the army has also planned a fourth stage which calls for a full reoccupation of Gaza and toppling of Hamas.
The Associated Press reported that during the day an Israeli tank shell landed outside a home in the northern Gaza town of Jebalya, killing nine people as they sat outside in their garden. Separately, a woman was killed by an Israeli air strike in the southern town of Rafah.
During the night, troops from the infantry, tanks, artillery, engineering and intelligence corps were engaging with Hamas operatives. Snipers fired at soldiers from the Paratroopers Brigade. The troops fired back and reported a hit. Mortar shells were fired at soldiers from the Givati infantry brigade. Troops returned mortar fire.
Between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, the military halted fire in order to allow the transfer of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The “humanitarian corridor” has been observed daily since Wednesday.
Wild Thing’s comment……
GO ISRAEL! No cease-fire until all objectives are met!. Run them into the ground. Tha Hamas are killers and need to be wiped out. I am so proud of the IDF.

Last days for Marine were true Finest hours Daily News
Sometimes when old Marines die they do fade away into unmarked graves in Potter’s Field.
Such might have been the case for Gaspar Musso, USMC 925050, who fought in the Battle of Tinian in the Marianas Islands in 1944 and who died Nov. 15 at age 84 in a Brooklyn nursing home.
Enter Police Officer Susan Porcello, a PBA delegate at the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge and one of those big-hearted New Yorkers who still make this the best city on Earth.
NYPD officer Susan Porcello
“No way was I going to let this brave old Marine who fought for his country in WWII get buried in Potter’s Field,” she says.
Porcello first met Musso back in July when she responded to a 911 ambulance call to the retired insurance broker’s one-bedroom apartment on, appropriately, Marine Ave.
“When my partner, Eddie Ennis, and I arrived at his apartment Gaspar seemed a little bit down about himself,” Porcello says. “He said he felt alone in the world. We talked to him a bit and as I looked around his tidy apartment I noticed that he had served in the military – the Marines to be exact.”
Porcello asked him about family and friends. “Look around you, what do you see?” Musso said. “I have no family or friends.”
To which Porcello said, “Well, I’m your friend.”
Right there, with those four beautiful words, Gaspar Musso was destined to die with the dignity he’d earned with a rifle in his hands, fighting in a USMC uniform, in a war that saved civilization.
If she didn’t already wear a badge, you’d want to pin a star on Susan Porcello.
Musso, a diabetic with a host of other age-related maladies, had accidentally overdosed on his prescription medications. Porcello accompanied him to Lutheran Medical Center.
“I told him I’d be back to visit him and take him to a senior center where he could make some friends,” said Porcello, who comes from a big Italian family with a mom, dad, three sisters and a brother.
“I told him I was making him my ‘Grandpa,’ and if he liked, he could spend Thanksgiving with my family. Eddie and I discussed alternating holidays with Gaspar so he wouldn’t be alone for any of them.”
Two days later Musso was placed in critical care. Porcello asked hospital staff where he’d be buried if he didn’t make it. “Potter’s Field,” said one administrator.
“This infuriated me,” said Porcello. “There was no way I was going to let a man who fought for our country be buried in Potter’s Field. Not on my watch!”
Porcello told the hospital to keep her apprised of Musso’s condition. She had a local priest visit him. Porcello even asked NYPD’s Missing Person’s Squad to search for next of kin.
No luck.
Musso had been an only child to Anthony and Marie Musso, both deceased. He had no other relatives. Musso’s only friend, an upstairs neighbor, had died the year before.
After his health improved, Musso asked Porcello to become his official health proxy.
She transferred him to Caton Park Nursing Home, where he was treated extremely well. She visited him often, learning that Musso was born May 7, 1924, joined the USMC in December 1943, finished training at Camp Lejune in March 1944 and was fighting with the 2nd Marines on Tinian Island by July 1944.
“I visited Gaspar on Nov. 13, bringing him rosary beads, a Bible, and his reading glasses,” she said.
“The next day, Nov. 14, I returned and found Gaspar sitting up in a chair, dressed in his own clothes. Looking great.”
Porcello washed his hands and face, trimmed his nails and eyebrows and asked if he was coming to her house for Thanksgiving. “I’m trying!” he said. He also asked Porcello to bring him a Christmas wreath for his room.
The next morning Porcello received a phone call saying that Gaspar Musso had died peacefully in his sleep.
No way was she going to let her good friend be toe-tagged and buried in Potter’s Field.
Porcello paid out of her own pocket for a wake at McLaughlin’s on Third Ave. and a mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Ridge, where a crowd of good-hearted cops from the 68th Precinct filled the pews, six serving as pallbearers. Sgt. Angel Rosa of the 68th, also a Marine, arranged for a USMC honor guard at Musso’s funeral.
Then taps blew over Gaspar Musso, United States Marine, as he was buried next to his mother at Resurrection Cemetery in Staten Island.
With the dignity he deserved.

LOL this is so cute, one of the kitties decides the puppy is ok to make a friend with. haha It is so cute to see how the interplay goes on between the two of them.
Violent clashes occurred between police and around 20,000 protesters outside the Israeli Embassy in London – with an estimated 100,000 protesters airing their views around the city.
Windows were smashed and policemen were injured – with one officer knocked unconscious in the running battles and two requiring treatment for facial injuries.
The protesters – mainly young men – knocked down barriers threw missiles including eggs, red paint, sticks and shoes as 300 officers in full riot gear tried to maintain the peace.
There were reports that some protesters had tried to set fire to police vans.
The violence, which broke out in front of the Israeli Embassy, appeared to be led by a hard-core of masked and hooded youths.
A national demonstration against Israel’s attack marched from Speakers’ Corner at Hyde Park today to the Israeli embassy in High Street Kensington.
UK Gaza conflict fuelling anger in UK, Muslims warn Brown
UK: Muslim Leaders Issue Veiled Threat to British Government, Back Hamas and Oppose Israel or Face More Jihadist Terror…..
Anger within Britain’s Muslim communities over the Gaza conflict has reached “acute levels of intensity” that could have repercussions for national security, leading Muslims will warn Gordon Brown today.
In a letter to the prime minister, representatives of Muslim organisations will say the Israeli government’s use of “disproportionate force” to combat threats to its security has “revived extremist groups” and “empowered their message of violence and perennial conflict”.
The letter, a copy of which can be read on the Guardian’s Comment is Free website, also says that the “current, partisan and simplified narrative” emanating from the White House is of “serious and direct harm” to relations between the UK, North America and Arab countries.
They say it is imperative for the UK to distance itself from the Bush government. The letter goes on: “We urge you to make concerted and successful efforts to convince the US administration of the dangers of its approach and to ensure the incoming Obama administration forges a more enlightened direction. We also believe the UK – bilaterally and as part of the EU – has an important role to demonstrate to Israel that the threshold of acceptable behaviour has been perilously transgressed.”
The letter adds: “As you are aware, the anger within UK Muslim communities has reached acute levels of intensity. The Israeli government’s use of disproportionate force … has revived extremist groups and empowered their message of violence and perennial conflict. For Muslims in the UK and abroad, we run the risk of potentially creating a loss of faith in the political process.”
Their intervention follows a meeting on Tuesday between Bill Rammell, foreign and commonwealth affairs minister, and 30 people drawn from Muslim organisations such as the Muslim Council of Britain and the Islamic Society of Britain.
In what was said to be a testy meeting, representatives told Rammell the government’s position on Gaza could provoke UK terrorist attacks. One of those present was Dr Hany el-Banna, youth worker and co-founder and president of the charity Islamic Relief.
A perceived double standard has alarmed the Young Muslims Advisory Group (YMAG), which the government launched last October to help prevent violent extremism. The group sent a letter to Brown this week saying government failure to condemn Israeli action against Palestinians was undermining efforts to reduce homegrown radicalisation.
The letter, first published in Muslim Youth, said:”We are in grave danger of sending a message to youth today that the mass murder of civilians can be justified if the right grievances are cited. In the current climate there is a real danger young people who witness the impotence of institutions that are supposed to be protecting innocent life will turn to other organisations in an effort to make their voices heard and the violence stop.”
Angry Indonesian Muslim students stormed a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant Thursday in protest against Israel’s military strikes on the Gaza Strip.
About 300 protesters gathered outside the US fast food outlet in Palu, Central Sulawesi, waving Palestinian flags, burning US and Israeli emblems and carrying banners condemning Israel as a “terrorist and criminal” state.
A handful of demonstrators then stormed the restaurant, overturning tables and chairs.
“KFC’s license is from America, an important Israeli ally. In consuming US products it means that we give financial contributions to Israel’s military strikes on the Palestinian people,” protest coordinator Maful Haruna said.
Jewish leaders in Rome today expressed outrage over a trades union proposal to “identify and boycott” Jewish-owned shops in the Italian capital amid fears of a resurgence of anti-Semitism linked to Israeli actions in Gaza.
Jewish leaders said the proposal, put forward by Giancarlo Desiderati, leader of the Flaica-Uniti-Cub union, which represents 8,000 shop assistants in Rome, was reminiscent of the anti-Semitic racial laws adopted 70 years ago by the Fascist dictatorship of Benito Mussolini in imitation of Nazi Germany, under which only “Aryan” shops were allowed to trade.
Asked if he was aware of the comparison, Mr Desiderati said: “We know we will have everyone against us, but we cannot pass over in silence what is happening in Gaza”.
He said his union had already urged its members to boycott Israeli products, and boycotting Jewish-owned or Jewish-run stores was a logical next step.

Afghans sign up to fight Israeli troops in Gaza
KABUL
(Reuters)
More than a thousand Afghans signed up on Thursday to say they wanted to go and fight Israel in the Gaza Strip, many of them blaming the United States which has some 30,000 troops in Afghanistan, for supporting the Jewish state.
Accusations by Taliban militants and some Muslim clerics that Israel and its main ally, the United States, aim to destroy Islam have a strong impact on public opinion in Afghanistan, where Washington plans to almost double its troop numbers this year.
Scores of young men crowded into the library of Kabul’s Milad ul-Nabi mosque, lined with banners reading “Death to Israel” and “Death to America”, to sign up to fight Israel.
“More than a thousand brave Afghans registered their names here to fight Israeli troops in Gaza,”said Habibullah Assam, the imam of the mosque and organiser of the campaign.

Vandals deface three local synagogues
Vandals spray-painted the words “Death to Israel’’ on two synagogues and a Jewish school early Saturday in three separate incidents police say could be linked and are being investigated as hate crimes.
In each case, the vandals — at times donning masks — used orange-colored paint, also shattering glass windows with bricks and rocks at two of the buildings.
Lincolnwood police said vandals also scrawled “Death to Israel’’ and “Free Palestine’’ on the outside walls of Lincolnwood Jewish Congregation, 7117 N. Crawford. Mitchell Sandler, past president of the congregation, said they threw at least two bricks at the front doors, damaging four windows.

Thousands in Lebanon, Europe demonstrate over Gaza BEIRUT, Lebanon
Nearly 20,000 people marched through southern Lebanon on Saturday to protest Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip, as thousands also took to the streets in several European cities to show their anger.
Wild Thing’s comment…….
What truly amazes me about these various protests, and it really doesn’t matter what city they are in, or what country they are in, is how these people make a choice to side with terrorists. And now all that are protesting are Muslims, they are like our Code Pink group in the USA and other communist groups, the workers union groups etc.
They have chosen to side with the enemy of the entire world……… TERRORISTS!
So when we hear of another attack let’s ask first how many of the victims were siding with the Hamas, how many were against Israel defending itself and fighting back. How many made a decision to ” sleep with the enemy” and then are they going to whine, cry, beat their chests in pain of lost loved ones when THEY are attacked one day?
They better look elsewhere for sympathy.
Prayers for the safety of the IDF and the Israeli’s. Prayers too for friends that live in countries that are mostly Muslim, Arab countries that they will be safe as well.
In Gaza, it targets Israeli citizens with rockets, then shields its fighters behind Palestinian civilians. LA Times
by By Alan M. Dershowitz
A temporary cease-fire in Gaza that simply allows Hamas to obtain more lethal weapons will assure a repetition of Hamas’ win-win tactic of firing rockets at Israeli civilians while using Palestinian civilians as human shields.
The best example of Hamas’ double war crime tactic was Tuesday, when it succeeded in sending a rocket to a town less than 20 miles south of Tel Aviv and injuring a child. At the same time, it provoked Israel to attack a United Nations school from which Hamas was launching its rockets. Residents of the neighborhood said two Hamas fighters were in the area at the time, and the Israeli military said they had been killed, according to the New York Times.
The Hamas tactic of firing rockets from schools, hospitals and mosques dates back to 2005, when Israel ended its occupation of Gaza. Several months ago, the head of the Israeli air force showed me a videotape (now available on YouTube) of a Hamas terrorist deliberately moving his rocket launcher to the front of a U.N. school, firing a rocket and then running away, no doubt hoping that Israel would then respond by attacking the rocket launcher and thus killing Palestinian children in the school. This is the Hamas dual strategy: to kill and injure as many Israeli civilians as possible by firing rockets indiscriminately at Israeli civilian targets, and to provoke Israel to kill as many Palestinian civilians as possible to garner world sympathy.
Lest there be any doubt about this, recall the recent case of Nizar Rayan, the Hamas terrorist and commander killed in Gaza by an Israeli missile strike Jan. 1. Israeli authorities had warned him that he was a legitimate military target, as was his home, which was a storage site for rockets. This is the same man who in 2001 sent one of his sons on a suicide mission to blow himself up at a Jewish settlement in Gaza. Rayan had the option of moving his family to a safe area. Instead, his four wives and children remained with him and became martyrs as Israel targeted his home for destruction.
Hamas leaders have echoed the mantra of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, that “we are going to win because they love life and we love death.”
It is difficult to fight an enemy that loves death in a world that loves life. The world tends to think emotionally rather than rationally when it is shown dead women and children who are deliberately placed in harm’s way by Hamas. Instead of asking who was really to blame for these civilian deaths, people place responsibility on those who fired the fatal shots.
The best proof of Hamas’ media strategy of manipulating sympathy is the way it dealt with a rocket it fired the day before Israel’s airstrikes began. The rocket fell short of its target in Israel and landed in Gaza, killing two young Palestinian girls. Hamas, which exercises total control of Gaza, censored any video coverage of those deaths. Although there were print reports, no one saw pictures of these two dead Palestinian children because they were killed by Palestinian rockets rather than by Israeli rockets. Hamas knows that pictures are more powerful than words. That is probably why Israel has — mistakenly in my view — kept foreign journalists from entering the war zone.
Wild Thing’s comment……..
And not one word from the UN about the Hamas, only pro Hamas from the UN. Pure evil = the UN and these terroriosts groups.

Crewman aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush work on a display of a statue of the former president on the hangar deck of the carrier at the Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Va
Aircraft Carrier Named the USS George H.W. Bush Commissioned Fox News
NORFOLK, Va. — President George W. Bush landed Saturday on the USS George H.W. Bush, a new aircraft carrier named after his father — the ultimate honor for a decorated Navy pilot from World War II.
With just days left in his presidency, Bush and first lady Laura Bush joined his father, now 84 years old, and other Bush family members at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia for the commissioning of the nuclear-powered carrier.
“Laura and I are thrilled to be here to help commission an awesome ship and to honor an awesome man,” Bush said. “So what do you give a guy who has been blessed and has just about everything he has ever needed? Well, an aircraft carrier.”
The steel-gray vessel is more than three football fields long, one in the Nimitz class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers that are the largest warships on the world. Its price tag is just as hefty: $6.2 billion.
The mood was celebratory aboard the ship, spit and polished for its unveiling. The Marine One presidential helicopter ferried the president, his father and their wives to the ship.
It was sunny, but a chilly breeze blew across the deck of the ship as the president, his father and their wives got off the helicopter with their wives. The elder Bush, sporting a purple scarf inside his overcoat, walked with a cane from the helicopter to a golf cart. He got in the back seat with former first lady Barbara Bush; the president grinned and waved as he took the driver’s seat with his wife by his side.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates, one of the first speakers, said there is no one more worthy than the former president to have the last ship of the Nimitz class to bear his name — “the last of the World War II generation to serve as commander in chief.”
The president’s daughters, Jenna Hager and Barbara Bush, and Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, were among the estimated 20,000 people who attended the event. Also on hand were Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine.
The Nimitz class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers was first launched in 1972. The USS George H.W. Bush is the 10th and final vessel of its type.
A bronze statue on the hangar bay deck of the 1,092-foot warship depicts the former president as a youthful, smiling pilot in his flight suit. On an upper deck, a “tribute room” presents Bush’s life from his days in the Navy to his four years in the White House.
Bush joined the Navy on June 12, 1942, his 18th birthday and six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the war he flew torpedo bombers off the converted aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals for his service.
On a mission over the Pacific in September 1944, Bush’s plane crashed into the ocean after being hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire. The future president parachuted into the sea and was rescued by a Navy submarine. He returned to combat and served until the end of the war.
