In another effort to undo the legacy of George W. Bush’s presidency, the Obama administration is searching for alternatives to the term “war on terror.”
In recent days, Obama’s national-security officials have had brainstorming sessions to come up with different ways to describe the U.S. government’s efforts to defeat Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, according to administration sources who asked not to be identified talking about private discussions.
What’s being sought is a more precise phrase that can recast the U.S. government’s counterterrorism fight in ideological as well as military terms. Obama publicly signaled the new approach this week.

When asked about the “war on terror” phrase by CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Obama said, “Well you know, I think it is very important for us to recognize that we have a battle or a war against some terrorist organizations … Words matter in this situation because one of the ways we’re going to win this struggle is through the battle of hearts and minds.”

Indeed, the “war on terror” was one of the signature phrases of the Bush presidency. It was formally declared in Bush’s nationally televised speech to Congress on Sept. 20, 2001—his first after the 9/11 terror attacks—when the president cast the government’s response in such sweeping terms that, according to critics, it ultimately opened the door for the invasion of Iraq. “Our enemy is a radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them,” Bush said then. “Our war on terror begins with Al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated.”

Obama has shied away from the words “war on terror” since he took office. He has made references instead to the “enduring struggle against terrorism and extremism” and to an “ongoing struggle,”

“We’re trying to come up with a phrase that better articulates a hopeful message,” said one administration official involved in the discussions about terror terminology.

Cooper, one of the 11 Democrats to vote against the House version of the stimulus bill, said he landed in hot water with Pelosi because he cared what was in the bill.

“I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don’t care what’s in the bill, they just want it pass and they want it to be unanimous,” he said. “They don’t mind the partisan fighting cause that’s what they are used to. In fact, they’re really good at it. And they’re a little bit worried about what a post-partisan future might look like. If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We’re just told how to vote. We’re treated like mushrooms most of the time.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. today turned a congressional subcommittee hearing into a diatribe on the dangers faced by the United States, affirming that hog producers are a far greater threat to the nation’s future than Osama bin Laden – and his terror network.
Kennedy’s comments came in response to a question from U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.

King asked whether a comment attributed to Kennedy in a published Iowa report in 2002 was accurate. In that, Kennedy stated that, “Large-scale hog producers are a greater threat to the United States and U.S. democracy than Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network.”

“Is that an accurate quote?” asked King, whose state includes thousands of small businesses producing pork.

“I don’t know if that [quotation] is accurate, but I believe it and I support it,” said Mr. Kennedy, who has been involved in a vigorous legal effort against the meat industry for some years, arguing that manure and other products associated with large livestock producers emit toxic wastes that threaten the environment.

“I believe it and I support it,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy explained that he agrees with Teddy Roosevelt’s statement that “this nation would never be destroyed by a foreign enemy. But he said malefactors with great wealth working from within would erode and subvert American democracy.”
But Kennedy accused King of asking an “inflammatory” question.
“Osama has no power over this country,” he said, periodically poking his finger in the air at the congressman. “Osama can’t make us alter our Constitution but that is happening every day because of the power of this industry [hog producers].”
A spokesman for King’s office in Washington said the congressman was concerned by the statements from Kennedy that accused the hog industry of subverting public officials, polluting the earth and damaging the nation.

Many folks have pointed out that Barack Obama has been treated by his supporters in and out of the media like a new messiah, the savior, the chosen one. Many other folks, including me, thought that this was not only sacrilegious but a case of downright overblown rhetorical politics. Now I’m not so sure.
After witnessing some of the inaugural high-jinks — including the shabby treatment of George W. Bush — I tried to be magnanimous, remembering the relief I felt when the reign of Bill Clinton ended and the GOP had regained the White House. Then I recalled how those of us who supported our 43rd president were scorned as “Bush-bots” and worse.
Well, it’s one thing to be a supporter, or even a sycophant, it’s quite another to view our Commander-in-Chief as an object of sacred adoration, even for liberals. But convinced as I now am that liberals regard government as their primary religion, the pronouncements of Obama as a God-like figure are right on the money.
At first this worship took the form of a schoolgirl crush, where 21st-century bobbysoxers swooned at his campaign rallies and chesty women jiggled in rapture at the mere sound of his name. This was easy enough to laugh off in this age of comparing people of note to “rock stars,” where adolescent girls plaster their bedroom walls with beefcake photos of their idols.
But this teenybopper infatuation soon morphed into something more sinister, assuming cult-like qualities. Eerie videos featuring angelic children singing psalms (note the hands crossed over the breast, a traditional prayer posture) to their leader and even more creepy, youths clad in paramilitary gear giving praise to the Big O; chanting inspirational lines like, “Obama’s health care plan will simplify paperwork for providers.”

After the iconic inauguration festivities, the worship segued into the bizarre, with scads of so-called celebrities making saccharine “pledges” to their Dear One. This truly noxious video features promises “to smile more” and “to never give anyone the finger when I’m driving again.” At one point, former NFLer Michael Strahan curiously vows “to consider myself an American, not an African-American.” The paean ends with a pledge “to be a servant to our president and to all mankind.” One can only take these devout folks at their word and trust that these vows will continue to be fulfilled should a mere mortal assume the throne.

All of this would be humorous were it not so ominous. Those who spent the last eight years reveling in comparisons of George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler might want to examine the parallels between their sworn devotion to their leader and those of the National Socialists and their use of “religion” as a tool to promote their agenda.

Perhaps the best illustration of this is a new website launched by Norman Lear and his buddies at the Christian-bashing People for the American Way. Now, you’d think that after finally realizing their dream of banishing the GOP from the White House and the majority on Capitol Hill, those on the left would be gracious in victory and leave the Religious Right to lick their wounds. But that’s not how our liberal friends operate. To rub further salt into the wound, they’ve repulsively named their site, Born Again American.
Although its main purpose seems to be promoting a dreary, complaint-rock folk song by Keith Carradine, the site claims that it is “committed to the rebirth and re-expression of citizenship through informed and thoughtful activism.” This activism it seems, would make Hitler and the boys happy, suggesting as it does that citizenship should supersede divine worship: Carradine’s bio at the site brags, “my bible is the Bill of Rights.”
Even more sickening is a video of Lear delivering an oration on his love for the Declaration of Independence, bemoaning the fact that “you don’t feel a lot of sacred honor in our country today.” He goes on to call laughter “a spiritual experience,” and claims that music and laughter are God’s proof that “we are one.”
Now call us Christians crazy — our Lord predicted that this would be the case — but we have all the proof we need from God every time we contemplate the Cross, and none of the secular alternatives in the world will ever separate us from that belief. We also believe that those who risked their sacred honor to found this country, would recoil in horror that Americans would someday bow down in homage to its government, and worse, to its president.

Veteran CBS Radio White House correspondent Mark Knoller reports that President Obama is relaxing more than the dress code at the presidential mansion. Pomp is giving way to piano-bar pop:

“On Day One of his presidency, everywhere Mr. Obama went they played “Hail to the Chief” for him – but not since. In fact the U.S. Marine Band’s duties at the White House over the last 10 days appear to have been dramatically downsized.

Instead of the usual contingent of trumpets, tubas and drums, a single piano player now provides musical interludes before and after the president’s appearance.

And the tunes have little connection to the military marching music of John Phillips Souza [sic] that is the usual accompaniment to presidential appearances. These days the pianist’s repertoire includes Cole Porter’s “Night and Day” and Sting’s “Desert Rose.”

To many Americans, this excessive informality suggests a real distaste for “official” or “patriotic” music, not to mention the Marine band that plays it.
This issue is light enough that Matt Lauer could have asked about it yesterday during his fluffy pre-Super Bowl interview. Will the rest of the media inquire about this musical flag-pin controversy?
At this rate, why doesn’t he just put his i-Pod in a speaker and hit “Shuffle”?

“Hail to the Chief” and other, similar patriotic songs are tributes to the presidency and the United States as represented by the president, not to the individual who is the president. Similarly, the president, by wearing a coat and tie in the Oval Office, and requiring others to do the same, demonstrates his deep respect for and loyalty to the country. A president who doesn’t show this respect for the office by having the proper music played and dressing respectfully, shows how much he really hates the country and its people. Just exactly what could be expected from a former communist street agitator, AKA “community organizer.”

The Louisiana Air National Guard is rich in tradition; and father and son, Command Chief Master Sgt. James Downing Sr. and Senior Airman James Downing Jr. share their family traditions with the 159th Fighter Wing’s Bayou Militia.
The duo recently celebrated a milestone few other father and son teams could ever dream of, launching an F-15 fighter jet together.

“It was a pretty cool experience that not too many people get to do,” the younger Downing said. He returned from Fighter Aircraft Maintenance training in April and has been in the Guard for a little more than a year.

The elder Downing, now in charge of the Wing’s overall morale and well-being as the command chief, joined his crew chief son on the flight line June 6 to send off one of the unit’s jets for a training fl ight.

“It was a blast,” Downing Sr. said of working with his son. “It was definitely the highlight of my career.”

It had been more than two years since Downing Sr. had launched a jet in his former role as crew chief. “I was a little rusty, that’s for sure,” he said.

“I had to bring my dad up to date on some new parts,” Downing Jr. said. Some things had changed since his dad launched planes on a regular basis.

However, for someone with as much experience launching as Downing Sr., the basics can never be forgotten. Downing Sr. crewed jets for 17 years, worked in quality assurance, and served as the maintenance superintendent over several sections including weapons, crew chiefs, avionics, alert and C-130s.
The elder Downing is understandably proud of his four children, all of whom his wife, Kim, homeschooled, including Melissa, 20; James Jr., 18; Stephanie, 16; and Jonathan, 14.

“My goal is to be here when both of my sons are in the unit,” Downing Sr. said. By the time the youngest son joins the 159th Fighter Wing, Downing Jr. will be close to graduating from college and entering the active duty Air Force, with plans to fly fighter jets.

Before he goes, he hopes to repeat this launch experience with his dad and younger brother, too.
Going back even further, their father and grandfather, Senior Master Sgt. John Downing, retired in 1994 with 20 years of service with the 159th Weather Flight, beginning the Downing family tradition with the Bayou Militia.

Governor Sarah Palin again today expressed her serious concerns with President Obama’s proposed stimulus package. In a joint letter sent to Alaska’s congressional delegation, Governor Palin, House Speaker Mike Chenault and Senate President Gary Stevens cautioned that unrestrained spending, initiation of new programs that the states may be asked to continue after the federal stimulus is gone, and the borrowing of hundreds of billions of dollars to pay for it may result in serious economic problems in the future.
“I agree with the decision of Senator Murkowski and Congressman Young to vote NO on the package,” Governor Palin said.
“It’s a given that a stimulus package is needed and will happen,” Palin said. “With guaranteed spending on the table, I am arguing for needed construction projects and tax breaks that will truly stimulate the economy and create jobs, and against increased federal programs that will become a state’s unfunded mandate to continue funding for generations.”

Nurse suspended for offering to pray

A Christian nurse in Britain may soon be fired for offering to pray for her patients’ recovery.
Caroline Petrie has been suspended and faces disciplinary action because her employer claims she failed to show a “personal and professional commitment to equality and diversity” when she suggested the prayer, the London Telegraph reported.
Petrie, 45, a wife and mother of two, is a community nurse who works for North Somerset Primary Care Trust. As part of her job, she visits patients who are sick and elderly.

Petrie said she never forced her Christian beliefs on any of her patients but simply asked if an elderly woman would appreciate the blessing.

“I simply couldn’t believe that I have been suspended over this,” she told the Telegraph. “I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong. All I am trying to do is help my patients, many of whom want me to pray for them.”

Petrie visited the elderly woman, a resident in Winscombe, North Somerset, in December.

“It was around lunchtime and I had spent about 20 to 25 minutes with her,” the nurse said. “I had applied dressings to her legs and shortly before I left I said to her: ‘Would you like me to pray for you?'”

The patient said, “No, thank you.”

Shortly afterward, Petrie’s employer contacted her and asked her why she had offered the prayer. The patient, a woman in her late 70s, had complained to the trust.
Another nurse approached Petrie the following day and told her the woman had been surprised by the offer. Petrie apologized and asked if she had offended the patient.
The nurse replied, “No, no. She was just a bit taken back. You must be aware of your professional code of conduct. I would be careful.”
But that wasn’t the end of it. Petrie returned home to find a message on her answering machine. She was suspended without pay on Dec. 17 and forced to attend a disciplinary meeting. Petrie expects to be notified of her employer’s decision this week.
The nurse told the Telegraph that she has been a Christian since she was only 10 – following her mother’s tragic death from breast cancer.
“My faith is very important to me,” she said.

Nurses are awesome, I actually prefer to see a nurse more then a ( internist) doctor. That is probably why the doctor I go to is a DO PA and not an internist. They are less likely to prescribe medication and are concerned more with total health and preventive care. Nurses have a better bedside manner, treat patients more like human beings so for me I will always have a very high regard for them.
This nurse in the article from what I can tell did nothing wrong. The nurse asked permission, she asked would the woman like to be prayed for a simple and harmless question. And for the patient to answer no and that was the end of it, then this woman ( the patient) in my opinion is probably some stupid liberal trying to make something out of this that did not exist.
With the Muslims taking over the UK, and that this nurse was polite about her question, it is silly and stupid for anyone to get upset about what happened.
Even if as the article said the nurse is a Christian if the patient was Jewish that would still not have been out of line as far as I can tell. They both have the same God and I have said I would pray for a Jewish person many times and not once were they offended. Just a simple thanks I appreciate it. So that can’t be it either.
I would stamp this patients chart with big letters across it…… LIBERAL AND TROUBLE MAKER.
