Texas Gov. Rick Perry is the winner of today’s Alabama — that’s Alabama – straw poll, according to party officials there.
Perry, who announced his candidacy for president as a Republican on Saturday, won with 46 percent of the vote. He was the keynote speaker at state GOP party’s annual summer dinner this weekend.
Herman Cain placed second with 21 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who attracted 16 percent of the vote, according to a release.

New GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry wins Alabama straw poll

Texas Governor Rick Perry, who announced Saturday his intention to run for the Republican nomination for President of the United States, was selected the winner of a presidential preference straw poll held Saturday by the Alabama Republican Party.
The party, in a statement Saturday to FOX6 News, said 46 percent of the state GOP executive committee picked Perry as a write-in candidate during their meeting at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
“Let me be clear that this is not an endorsement by the Alabama Republican Party,” said Bill Armistead, Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, in the statement. “We were interested to see how the current field stands with Republican voters in Alabama. We are thankful for all of the candidates who participated by submitting videos and campaign materials for us to review.”
Businessman Herman Cain received 21% and former Governor Mitt Romney received 16% of the vote. All declared candidates who had received at least 2% in three national polls were included. Listed on the ballot were Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. The only names receiving write-in votes were Rick Perry and Sarah Palin.
Perry was in Birmingham Friday night and spoke to Republicans.
“The entire weekend was a rousing success. We had 1,500 activists at our Annual Summer Dinner on Friday night to hear Texas Governor Rick Perry,” continued Armistead. “Governor Perry gave a stirring, conservative speech that obviously resonated very well with the attendees.”
The vote comes on the same day as the far better-publicized Iowa Straw Poll in Ames, Iowa.
Perry: 101
Cain: 47
Romney: 36
Gingrich: 11
Bachmann, Paul, Pawlenty, Santorum, Johnson, Palin: All in single digits

Wild Thing’s comment……
I never knew about this before.

I think Perry has brought a great deal of excitment to the Republican primary. He has entered with a strong surge. I just hope that he and the others don’t attack each other. I want them to lay out their policies and let us compare and decide based on their platforms, not their “gotchas”.
I like Cain. However I would love to see a Pery/Palin or Perry/ Bachmann ticket. Any of these three and Cain would also be a good ticket.

with the poor numbers mitt romney has brought in the last couple of days as well as the heckling he received in iowa after his statement of “corporations are people , my friend” one has to wonder if he is finished?it would certainly seem to be. that would leave a vast source of funds for another candidate . his “corporations are people” statement is not the message to bring as millions of americans are unemployed, facing foreclosure, on food stamps, losing their life -savings. i would think mitch is done. of course i am all for a draft rep. allen west movement !

For those that might have missed it, here’s something I wrote on another Sunday here last June with a little biography on Texas Governor Rick Perry:
“Our loudest opponents on the Left are never going to like us, so let’s quit trying to curry favor with them.”
“Let’s stand up. Let’s speak with pride about our morals and our values and redouble our effort to elect more conservative Republicans.”
“Let’s stop this American downward spiral.”
Friends, mark your calendar. It started yesterday, Saturday afternoon June 18 in New Orleans:
Speaking well, and for just 20 minutes to 2,000 Republicans at the 2011 Leadership Conference, spoke the next President of the United States, a fifth generation Texan of Paint Creek, Abilene in West Texas, Air Force Captain James Richard “Rick” Perry:

What’s not to love ? Yes, this is our man.
So contrasting and so diametrically opposed to the current White House policies of higher taxes, profligate spending, budget deficits with higher and higher cumulative debt, resulting in no growth and sustained higher unemployment, American voters will have a distinct choice next year clearly delineated.
We are at the cusp of a new American Renaissance defining for ourselves just what it means to be an American.
We Americans vote in a General Election in a little over 500 days, and I think I’ve been able to figure it now.
What I write here, nobody is writing or talking about, but they soon will.
I do think we have a conservative white knight who, if he now seeks the Republican nomination, can win and will win simply because he must win.
I believe the November 2012 General Election will prove to be the most important, decisive election in the history of our country since 1860 and Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican.
Anyhow, allow me to introduce you,
born in 1950, he was:
-an Eagle Boy Scout growing up and coming of age in the 1960’s
-a door to door book salesman before graduating from college
-a C-130 pilot and Air Force Captain in the 1970’s
-a cotton farmer and elected a Democrat state representative in the 1980’s
-a twice elected Republican State Agriculture Commissioner in the 1990’s
-and for the last ten years, the Governor of his state, three times elected.
Pro-life, and opposing legal recognition of same sex marriages, he is a social conservative.
With a low tolerance for crime and a law and order proponent of the death penalty, there have been more than 200 executions during his tenure as Governor.
A fiscal conservative for the most part, he has signed and delivered balanced budgets as the law requires in a state with no income tax with remarkably no increases in the state sales taxes, while still protecting his state’s rainy day fund.
He has written two books:
“On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts are Worth Fighting For” where he celebrates the positive impact of the organization on America’s youth and criticizes the ACLU for its legal actions against the Boy Scouts of America.
In his second book, “Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America from Washington”, he writes of the founding fathers’ intent for limited federal government.
Now that his state’s legislative session this year is coming to an end, I think we may very well soon have an announcement from Austin of a successful white knight entry into the 2012 race for the White House of one,
James Richard “Rick” Perry, the three term Governor of the State of Texas.
It is not easy to unseat a sitting President, but it can be done. It will be done, simply because it must be done.
During what will certainly be a contentious, heated campaign with sadly many false claims of racism, other crap and diversions, the economy will still be the predominant and defining issue.
In the midst of a serious economic downturn throughout the country and the world, the Lone Star State has great comparative economic strength and continued success being the state with the largest job creation with lower unemployment despite the severe recession, and with low state taxes, restrained public spending and balanced budgets.
The eyes of Texas and the world will see this stark economic policy contrast of the current White House with higher taxes, higher deficit spending, and continued higher unemployment making for a fork in the road so very clear and well delineated for American voters that will forebode well throughout the campaign to come.
So long as this remains the predominant issue, victory is assured for a better America with conservative leadership in the White House, President Rick Perry, Vice President Marco Rubio and with more than a pretty face, registered nurse and first lady Anita Perry (God help them):

Tom, I agree so much, I don’t want this to turn into gotchas between all of them. We have an evil force in the WH and that is the real enemy.

latitude38, Allen West is a such a wonderful man and a real hero and honorable. I am a big fan of his and thank God he is here in Florida. He has been asked several times and said not at this time. But he did say depending on who won if they asked him about VP he might consider it. But that was months ago.

Wild Thing says:

Carlos, that is fantastic, thank you so much for sharing that again. It really menas a lot to me Carlos that you put this here. So much happens every day since obama took office that it is easy to forget things that are posted or shared in the comments as well.
Love your input.

Godfather’s Pizza was out of Atlanta, GA It appears that the closer you get the better Herman Cain looks. Maybe he will make a good number two for somebody.
Gingrich was also the congressman in Georgia that the Journal Constitution phone hacked and tried to defeat for over a decade.
