Sen. Marco Rubio gets plum committee assignment
St. Pete Times
WASHINGTON
New Florida Sen. Marco Rubio will serve on four committees, including a spot on intelligence.
Rubio received his assignments Thursday and will be on the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation; the Committee on Foreign Relations; the Select Committee on Intelligence; and the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
The Republican success in November had a downside for Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.
To make more room for Republicans, Nelson had to give up a seat on the Armed Service Committee. He had been able to use the perch to secure some top projects for Florida, including a nuclear aircraft carrier at Naval Station Mayport near Jacksonville.
Nelson will remain on three major committees — commerce, finance, intelligence — and hold onto budget and aging.
He secured a promise from Democratic Leader Harry Reid that he would be restored to Armed Services if Democrats retake some seats lost in 2010 (and Nelson is re-elected in 2012).
Rubio had expressed interest in foreign relations and the intelligence post is a plum for a newcomer, overseeing all federal agencies that gather information on national security.
Wild Thing’s comment…….
Congratulations Marco, I am proud of you. Please never let us down and stay on course. America needs you and others like you.
Great to have a man like Rubio on the Intelligence committee and the small business committee.
Tom, thank you for your input about this, I was thinking it was a good thing but I wanted to know what you thought too about it. I think it is pretty big that they asked him when there are so many new ones now. Thanks again Tom.
