This from the book: “In the President’s Secret Service: Behind the Scenes With Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect”
Ronald Reagan received Secret Service protection for the first time when he ran unsuccessfully for the GOP presidential nomination in 1976. One day as he was preparing to drive from his Los Angeles home to his ranch near Santa Barbara, an agent noticed that he was wearing a gun and asked what it was for.
“Well, just in case you guys can’t do the job, I can help out,” Reagan replied.
Years later, he confided to an agent that on his first presidential trip to the Soviet Union in May 1988, he had carried a gun in his briefcase.
Wild Thing’s comment…….

The Best CinC I had in my twenty years of service. Hands down.
As far as I’m concerned there were only two presidents last century, Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, the rest were ‘progressives’ or worse. Remember the last time the president and Congress did their jobs in compliance with the constitution?
December 8, 1941
December 11, 1941
June 5, 1942
When was the last time anyone of them adhered to their oaths of office?
Glen, I wholeheartedly agree on Reagan being the best Cinc. He brought respectability and pride back to the Armed Forces, something severely lacking during the Carter years.
I adore this photo of Reagan. His face projects a man of good character, showing that he loved the outdoors, his larconic grin displays that he was a man comfortable in his own skin, and his eyes winkle with genuine happiness. I have always equated the Reagan years with respect. How many Presidents can leave a legacy like that? Not to many I wager. RIP Ronnie…we really do miss you.
We have company (20 peeps) coming in in early October and one of our destinations will be the Reagan Library. My wife and I have been 3 times and we can’t wait to visit for the 4th time.
For any who are ever in the SoCal area, the Reagan Library is a MUST. It is fabulous.
And while I’m at it, SCREW BLOWBAMA!
Ronald Reagan was America. He personified the traditions, customs and morals that were the basis of America in the 20th Century.
I wish I could visit his library.
cuchieddie – DITTOS!
Glenn Cassel AMH1(AW) USN RET, I am
so glad you got to serve with Reagan
as CIC.
Jack I am so down on voting right now. I am
so sick of half way conservatives and rino’s
being shoved at all of us.
Lynette in Australia, beautifully put.
I agree so much. very deep sigh wishing
we could go back to those years.
cuchieddie(former Army Infantry), oh wow
that is a crowd. giggle. They will love
your trip planned to the Reagan Library
how wonderful.
And after all these years the left still villifies him, why cuz he scred them to death. Just like Sarah Palin does today.
I know it sounds cliche’ but lets go out there and win one for the Gipper.
