Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday he no longer views Colin Powell as a Republican.
Appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Cheney was asked about a dispute between Powell — who was secretary of state in the Bush-Cheney administration — and radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh over the role each plays in the GOP.
“My take on it was Colin had already left the party,” Cheney said. “I didn’t know he was still a Republican.”
The former vice president noted that Powell endorsed then-Sen. Barack Obama in last year’s presidential race. “I assume that that’s some indication of his loyalty and his interests,” Cheney said.
Powell, in a speech last week, said “the Republican Party is in deep trouble” and said the GOP would be better off without Limbaugh, according to a report by the National Journal.
Limbaugh fired back on his program Wednesday, saying, “What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party.”
But, he added, “I don’t think the party ought to move dramatically to the left, for example, in order to try to redefine its base. We are what we are. We’re Republicans. We have certain things we believe in. And maintaining our loyalty and commitment to those principles is vital to our success.”

Let us also note the Secretary Powell condemned the harsh rhetoric of the GOP– but he was utterly silent when Democratic Congressmen were comparing President Bush (43) to Adolf Hitler.

Powell is a member of The Self-Promotion Party. Whatever get’s Powell promoted. No principles, no core values, no beliefs.
Yes, at least Cheney tells the truth as he sees it. He doesn’t lie to tell what he thinks people want to hear. As far as Powell, he is showing his true colors.

Cheney speaks the truth. Why is that so bad? Powell has turned all wishy washy. I used to look up to him with his mighty ability to lead but now I just think he got his jobs because he was a minority and really didn’t have the necessary skills. You don’t see Stormin’ Norman bailing on anyone do you?
Powell has always been ‘wishy-washy’, when the troops were at the outskirts of Badgdad, in the Gulf War, it was Powell who insisted that the coalition forces stopped and not pursue Hussein and bring the war to an inconclusive conclusionl. Saddam quickly took bloody revenge on the Shia’s and Kurds. This is a good idea of what Colon Powell’s party of moderation really is.
Colon Powell calls Ann Coulter viscious, yet Michale Moore who relates Jihadist’s to America’s Minuteman is a moderate.
Along with his views on What it is to be a Republican his sanity should be questioned, too.
The Democrats made fun of McCain’s war injuries, poking fun at how he was unable to use a computer keyboard because of these injuries. To this, Powell had no response. Sarah Palin brought up Obama’s close relationship to Ayers and Powell said this was going over the line. You would think a retired 4-Star General and Chairman of the JCS would be livid over people making fun of a disabled veteran’s war injuries.
At one time I thought highly of Colin Powell and considered him a conservative. Since the First Gulf War though I have had deep doubts. When he endorsed Obama, then I knew Powell was not a conservative. He just used conservatives to achieve his positions.
I am a bit surprised that so far Obama has not tapped Powell for a White House post. It may be that Powell is not far enough to the left, or Powell may have seen how many have ended up under that bus.

I’m still thinking about that command bunker at the 23rd Infantry Division with G3 Colon Powell safely ensconced inside, ‘getting his ticket punched’. We went past it on every mission to the field out of Chu Lai.
Powell was a captain during the Vietnam War, serving as a South Vietnamese Army adviser from 1962 to 1963. While on patrol in a Viet Cong-held area, he was wounded by stepping on a punji stake. He returned to Vietnam as a major in 1968, serving in the Americal Division (23rd Infantry Division), then as assistant chief of staff of operations for the Americal Division. He was charged with investigating a detailed letter by Tom Glen (a soldier from the 11th Light Infantry Brigade), which backed up rumored allegations of the My Lai Massacre.
Powell wrote: “In direct refutation of this portrayal is the fact that relations between American soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent.” Later, Powell’s assessment would be described as whitewashing the news of the massacre, and questions would continue to remain undisclosed to the public.
In May 2004 Powell said to Larry King, “I mean, I was in a unit that was responsible for My Lai. I got there after My Lai happened. So, in war, these sorts of horrible things happen every now and again, but they are still to be deplored.”
His second tour was in the Americal Division command bunker, the 23 Infantry Division’s War Room, a very secure bunker.
1937- Born as Colin Luther Powell in the Bronx.
1940- Moves to Hunts Point with family.
1954- Graduates from Morris High School and enrolls in City College of New York. While there, enrolls in ROTC.
1958- Graduates from City College of New York at the top of his ROTC class and is commissioned as Second Lieutenant in U.S. Army. Enrolls in Infantry Officer’s Basic Training. Attends Airborne and Ranger schools.
1959- Serves as platoon leader and rifle company commander in West Germany.
1960- Becomes battalion adjutant at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
1962- Marries Alma Johnson. Goes to Vietnam to serve as an advisor to an infantry battalion.
1963- Firstborn, Michael, is born. Powell gets wounded in action in Vietnam by stepping on a punji stake and receives the Purple Heart.
1964- Enrolls in Command and General Staff College.
1965- Daughter, Linda, is born.
1968- Powell goes to Vietnam again to serve as an infantry battalion executive officer and assistant chief of staff, G-3, 23rd Infantry Division.
1969- Enrolls at George Washington University.
1970- Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
1971- Earns a Master of Business degree from George Washington University and his second daughter, Annemarie, is born.
1972- Selected as White House Fellow. He also serves as special assistant to the deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. Powell is promoted to Major.
1973- Assumes command of the First Battalion, 32nd Infantry in South Korea.
1974- Becomes operations research analyst in the office of the assistant defense secretary.
1975- Enrolls in the National War College.
1976- Assumes command of the Second Brigade, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He graduates with distinction from the National War College.
1977- Serves in the Intermediate Office of the secretary of defense and as senior military assistant to the deputy of defense.
1979- Serves as an executive assistant to the secretary of energy and is promoted to Brigadier General.
1981- Becomes assistant commander for Operations and Training, Fourth Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado.
1983- Serves as deputy commander at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and becomes Senior Military Assistant to the secretary of defense.
1986- Assumes command of the U.S. Army V in Frankfurt West Germany. He also testifies before the Tower Commission about his role in the Iran-Contra affair.
1987- Becomes Deputy National Security Advisor and National Security Advisor.
1989- Promoted to Four Star General.
1989- Named commander in chief of the U.S. Forces Command at Fort McPherson in Atlanta Georgia. He also becomes chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff and directs an invasion of Panama to capture General Manuel Noriega.
1990- Directs the Operation Desert Shield campaign in the Middle East.
1991- Oversees U.S. effort in the Persian-Gulf War. At this time, he also accepts 2nd term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
1993- Begins to write his autobiography, My American Journey.
1995- Publishes My American Journey.
2001- Sworn in on January 20 to become the Secretary of State.
Staff officer!!! What were his duties?
There are different levels of staffs:
S staff: battalion and brigade levels
G staff: division and corps levels
J staff: “Joint” staff. Any time two or more services work together, a J staff is used to coordinate them. XVIII Airborne Corps and Army Special Operations Command use J staffs because they’re so dependent on the Air Force.
C staff: “Combined” staff. Any time two or more nations’ military’s work together, a C staff coordinates them.
Now as to organization, and we’ll use a division as our example. It gets more complex at corps level.
First is the division commander. This is always a Major General–a two-star. There are more major generals than we have major general slots. He has three officers who report to him: the Assistant Division Commander for Operations ADC(O), the Assistant Division Commander for Support and the Chief of Staff. The Assistant Division Commanders are brigadier generals; the chief of staff is a full-bird colonel.
The ADC(O) is in charge of the warfighters–the infantry, armor, field artillery, cavalry, engineer, air defense artillery and aviation assets. (Aviation USED to belong to the ADC(S) until someone happened to notice all the hardware hanging off an Apache…) In a lot of divisions, the ADC(O) owns the medical company too. The ADC(S) is in charge of all the combat support and combat service support elements of the division. (This doesn’t mean the ADC(O) owns the infantrymen in an infantry battalion and the ADC(S) owns the cooks in the mess hall.)
The Chief of Staff manages six officers:
G-1 is personnel
G-2 is intelligence. He controls two other officers: assistant G-2 for security and assistant G-2 for intelligence.
In practice, the G-2 and not the ADC(S) owns the division Military Intelligence battalion. G-2 owns the division crypto bunker, where the encryption equipment is repaired. It’s called a crypto bunker because it is always, no matter which installation you’re on, in an ammo bunker.
G-3 is the division operations officer. He’s got four officers working for him. The first is the G-3 Operations Officer. He is in charge of warfighting. The second is the G-3 Plans officer, then the G-3 Training and G-3 Air officers. The G-3 Air is ALWAYS a pilot. G-3 is also in charge of ammunition.
G-4 is logistics. He is in charge of all supplies except ammunition.
G-5 is civil affairs. Unless you’re in the 2nd Infantry Division, you will not find this element below division level. In the Second Infantry Division, S-5 is an additional duty for some lieutenant in HHC.
G-6 is new: Information Systems. Imagine the Geek Squad in camouflage uniforms
I have to respond “Well DUH!” After we found out that Powell let the administration twist in the wind for three years after finding out that his aid at the State department leaked Valerie Plames indentity to the NYT and NBC. He also stood by and those people lie to a grand jury that Scooter Libby told them who the CIA official was when he knew they had the information before Scooter Libby.

be offered something from Bush and he
turned it down and took a different job
from Bush.I forget what the first thing was
he was offered. His excuse was his wife did
not want him to do it.
