Sen. Barack Obama issued a statement this afternoon after a video tape emerged showing Father Michael Pfleger ‘speechifying’ from the pulpit of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
In the statement Obama said he was “deeply disappointed” in Pfleger after his sermon was captured on videotape showing the priest mocking Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and white people from the pulpit of Trinity, the home church of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Sen. Obama.
Rev. Pfleger issued his own statement about his Sunday, May 25th sermon: “I regret the words I chose on Sunday. These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama’s life and message, and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them.”

If? Did he just say “if” Clinton would be offended? Pfleger knew that his comments were going out over the Internet and he had to know what the reaction would be. That is like saying don’t think of the pink elephant in the room.
Obama is going to be mighty exhausted from having to throw every single previous mentor/friend under the speeding bus.
It was obvious that the “worshippers” in that “church” were anything but offended. With all that cheering and whooping and hollering; it was a disgrace. Obama’s “church” is more political than it is a church.
Obama’s rolodex is crammed full of unsavory characters: Ranting race hustlers, unrepentant ex-terrorists, corrupt fixers, sleazy ward hustlers, Hamas fund-raisers…the list goes on and on.
What amazes me is how and why this jerk priest wants to be black so much, he does as much as he can to sound and move like Rev. Wright and a dozen other white haters that speak from a pulpit.
This is beyond belief. If McCain belonged to a church where ministers spewed hatred from the pulpit- and the congregation cheered them on, the media would roast him alive- every single day.

Pentagon officials are raising alarm over the threat of a North Africa-based terror cell that they say is could be preparing to launch attacks in Europe and North America.

The new faces of terror are militants inside an emerging al Qaeda cell, which U.S. officials warn presents a clear and growing threat to America.
Based in North Africa, the group calling itself “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” specializes in kidnappings and suicide attacks.
A car bombing last September of an Algerian military barracks killed 28 people. But, follow-up bombings of a United Nations building and a diplomatic office signaled that Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, has bigger plans.

“They have devoted an enormous amount of their energy and their resources to try to build this up as a base to try to carry out attacks, not just in North Africa, but ultimately into West Europe and someday against North America,” says Bruce Riedel of the Brookings Institute.

Riedel, a former CIA official, says a propaganda video – just posted on a jihad website – shows a sophisticated attack capability.
But, the most lethal aspect of AQIM – and its real value for Osama bin Laden’s terror network – goes beyond firepower.

Says Ambassador Dell Dailey, a U.S. Department of State Counterterrorism official: “Leaders of al Qaeda and its affiliates are extremely interested in recruiting terrorists from and deploying terrorists to Europe, people familiar with our Western cultures that can travel freely.”

And that’s exactly who’s being drawn to the AQIM training camps – people who can easily blend in without raising suspicions in Europe or the U.S.

“Some of those people are second, third generation and they now have French, Belgian or Spanish passports and a French, Belgian or Spanish passport is exactly what al Qaeda is looking for because that’s their mechanism to get into the United States,” Riedel says.

U.S. officials have long worried about British radicals using U.K. passports to bring terror to America. But, now the North African branch of al Qaeda presents a second pipeline – a doubled threat to the homeland.

Senators Joseph I. Lieberman and Lindsey Graham, prominent surrogates for Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign, stepped down Wednesday from their positions with an independent group that released a pair of Internet advertisements attacking Senator Barack Obama on Iraq.
Mr. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, and Mr. Graham, Republican of South Carolina, were both on the policy advisory board to the organization, Vets for Freedom, which on Wednesday released its second Web advertisement in less than a week attacking Mr. Obama.
The senators’ positions with the group, which describes itself as a grass-roots advocacy organization pushing for victory in Iraq and Afghanistan, seemed to place them in contravention of new conflict-of-interest rules released by Mr. McCain’s campaign that specifically prohibit anyone “with a McCain campaign title or position” from participating in a “527 or other independent entity that makes public communications that support or oppose any presidential candidate.”
After inquiries from reporters, the senators released a joint letter to Vets for Freedom on Wednesday saying they had requested a leave from their positions to come into compliance with the new policy.
“This is obviously something we’re working through,” said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the McCain campaign. “This is the kind of thing that happens when you have the strictest possible policy on these issues.”
The new policy was meant to head off embarrassing questions about connections of members of the McCain campaign to special interests that run counter to Mr. McCain’s reformist reputation. But adhering to that standard has proved complicated.
The new rules were prompted this month in part by revelations that Craig Shirley, a consultant to the campaign, was also paid by a 527 group that was criticizing Mr. Obama. Mr. Shirley stepped down from his role on Mr. McCain’s Virginia leadership team.
Vets for Freedom put out its first advertisement last Friday, featuring an Iraq war veteran saying Mr. Obama “hasn’t once sat down one on one with our commander in Iraq, General Petraeus,” adding: “Worse, he hasn’t been to Iraq in two-and-a-half years. He’s unwilling to get the facts on Iraq, yet he’s willing to travel to Iran to meet their leader, or anyone else who hates our country.” The veterans group’s latest commercial continued on the same theme.
Vets for Freedom is not organized as a 527, which refers to a section of the tax code. The designation often carries a negative connotation because of the attacks of 527 groups like Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in the 2004 campaign. Instead, Vets for Freedom is organized as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, an increasingly common tactic for outside groups seeking to get involved in campaigns.
The group also has a political action committee, which financed the Internet advertisements.

“We are not supporting the candidacy or opposing the candidacy of anybody,” Pete Hegseth, the group’s chairman, said. “We’re merely asking serious questions about a sitting senator.”

Climate Reality Bites

The vehicle is a bill that principal sponsors Joe Lieberman and John Warner are calling “landmark legislation.” They’re too modest. Warner-Lieberman would impose the most extensive government reorganization of the American economy since the 1930s.
Almost all economic activity requires energy, and about 85% of U.S. energy generates carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. For centuries, these emissions were considered the natural byproduct of combustion. As recently as the 1990 Clean Air Act amendments, they were consciously not even described as a “pollutant.” But now that the politicians want to decrease those emissions, the government must create a new commodity – the right to create CO2 – and put a price on it. This is an unprecedented tax that would profoundly touch every corner of American life.
The policy preferred by the environmental lobby is called cap and trade. The government would set a limit on emissions that declines every year. The goal of Warner-Lieberman is to return to 2005 levels by 2012, and to reduce that by 30% by 2030.
“Allowances” for emissions would be distributed to covered businesses – power, oil, gas, heavy industry, manufacturing, etc. If they produced less than their allotment, the companies could sell the allowances, or trade them. Cap and trade limits on energy are thus sometimes misleadingly described as a “free market” policy that would create the flexibility for CO2 reductions how and where they are least expensive. But the limits are still a huge tax.
And for the most part, the politicians favor cap and trade because it is an indirect tax. A direct tax – say, on gasoline – would be far more transparent, but it would also be unpopular. Cap and trade is a tax imposed on business, disguising the true costs and thus making it more politically palatable. In reality, firms will merely pass on these costs to customers, and ultimately down the energy chain to all Americans. Higher prices are what are supposed to motivate the investments and behavioral changes required to use less carbon.
The other reason politicians like cap and trade is because it gives them a cut of the action and the ability to pick winners and losers. Some of the allowances would be given away, at least at the start, while the rest would be auctioned off, with the share of auctions increasing over time. This is a giant revenue grab. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that these auctions would net $304 billion by 2013 and $1.19 trillion over the next decade. Since the government controls the number and distribution of allowances, it is also handing itself the political right to influence the price of every good and service in the economy.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that this meddling would cause a cumulative reduction in the growth of GDP by between 0.9% and 3.8% by 2030. Add 20 years, and the reduction is between 2.4% and 6.9% – that is, from $1 trillion to $2.8 trillion.
These estimates assume that electricity prices will increase by 44% above what they would otherwise be by 2030. They also assume that existing coal-fired power plants, which currently provide about 50% of U.S. electric power, will be shut down – to be replaced with at least 150% growth in new nuclear facilities, plus other “alternatives.” Yet there are only 104 current U.S. nuclear plants, and the industry itself says it’s optimistic to think even 30 more can be built by 2020.
In fact, it is pointless to project so far out over multiple decades, since no one knows how markets and consumers would respond, whether the rules would remain constant, or what new technologies might come along. While moralizing about America, most of Europe has failed to meet its mandatory cap and trade goals under the Kyoto Protocol. But the U.S. isn’t Italy; we will enforce our laws. So our guess is that these cost estimates are invariably far too low.
In a bow to this reality, California Democrat Barbara Boxer last week introduced 157 pages of amendments to Warner-Lieberman. Most notably, she sets aside at least $800 billion through 2050 for consumer tax relief. So while imposing a huge new tax on all Americans, she vouchsafes to return some of the money to some people. Needless to say, the Senator will be the judge of who receives her dispensation.
Ms. Boxer’s amendment shows that cap and trade is also a massive wealth redistribution scheme – all mediated by her and her fellow Platonic rulers. Oh, and she also includes an “emergency off-ramp,” should costs prove too onerous. This is really a political “off-ramp” to make Warner-Lieberman seem less dangerous, but you can imagine her reaction if some future Republican President decided to take it.
The upshot is that trillions in assets and millions of jobs would be at the mercy of Congress and the bureaucracy, all for greenhouse gas reductions that would have a meaningless impact on global carbon emissions if China and India don’t participate. And only somewhat less meaningless if they do.
Warner-Lieberman has no chance of becoming law this year with President Bush in the White House. But the goal of this Senate exercise is political – to get Members on the record early, preferably before the burdens of cap and trade become more widely understood; to give Democrats a campaign issue; and to pour the legislative foundation that the next Administration could cite as it attempts to regulate carbon limits while waiting for Congress to act.
So by all means let’s have this debate amid $4 gasoline, and not only on C-Span. If Americans are going to cede this much power to the political class, they at least ought to do it knowing the price they will pay.

The Senate’s leading climate-change bill, while aiming to combat global warming by reducing carbon dioxide in the air, actually poses “extraordinary perils” for Americans and the economy, according to a new study from The Heritage Foundation.

The study, produced by Heritage’s Center for Data Analysis (CDA), forecasts severe consequences—including crushing energy costs, millions of jobs lost and falling household income—if Congress enacts the so-called Lieberman-Warner bill.

Warner-Lieberman bill could raise gas prices

The bill could add about 50 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline, according to a study.
Lawmakers have spent the spring debating ways to lower prices at the pump. But they will soon find themselves discussing a measure that could push fuel costs even higher.
The Warner-Lieberman bill, which is expected to be debated on the Senate floor the first week of June, seeks to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 65 percent below 2005 levels by 2050.
It does so by imposing a cap on the amount of greenhouse gases an industrial sector can release. Companies that exceed that cap could buy emission allowances from greener businesses in an open market.
For refiners, the bill would act like a tax on carbon dioxide, a leading greenhouse gas released when fossil fuels are burned. The total price hit would reach 60 cents, the study predicts.
About 80 percent of that would be passed on to consumers.

At least some members of the much-touted crowd of 75,000 people at a May 18 rally in Portland for Barack Obama may have been there, in part, to see a popular local band that normally opens its concerts with the national anthem — of the former Soviet Union.
National media outlets have widely reported estimates of between 72,000 and 75,000 people in attendance at Obama’s rally. What they have largely failed to report, however, is that many in the crowd may have attended as much for a free concert as to express their support for the Democratic frontrunner.

“The rally drew 75,000 people, but the media did not give any credit to the opening act, The Decemberists, who are wildly popular in Portland,” says Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Media Institute of the Media Research Center. “I’m not saying that Obama wouldn’t have drawn a big crowd, but certainly when you have a band that popular opening for him on a beautiful day, that probably should have been mentioned by the media.”

By not mentioning the band, Knight says, the media has been able to avoid a well-known fact about The Decemberists.

“You’d think the media would find it interesting that a presidential candidate had a band open for him that typically plays the Soviet national anthem, the song that celebrates communism in Russia,” Knight says. “But the media has taken no interest in it.”

Knight says the Obama campaign could have easily learned that their opening act routinely starts its shows with the Soviet anthem by checking either Google or Wikipedia.

“The Obama campaign is secure in the knowledge that the mainstream media will not report any of this. Certainly they haven’t so far,” he complained. “They know that the media will not do anything to embarrass liberal candidates. They cover for them all the time. So, that might make them a little complacent about checking out people that they are associated with.”

According to the Wikipedia entry about The Decemberists, “The band is named in reference to an 1825 revolt over the Imperial Russian succession (Decemberist Revolt). It is not related to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, although Meloy has referred to the historical Decembrists as a communist revolutionary group.”

But this band is anti-war, many of their songs are anti-war songs, and like the articvle says they open their concerts with the national anthem of the former Soviet Union. Officers: Memorial Used As Porta-Potty Pit Stop At Obama Rally
PORTLAND, Ore.

Portland police officers have asked for an apology after they said organizers of a Barack Obama rally set up Porta-Potties on a memorial honoring fallen officers.
Earlier this month, 75,000 people gathered in Waterfront Park in downtown Portland to hear Obama speak at a pre-primary rally.
Officer Thomas Brennan, a seven-year veteran with the Portland Police Bureau, said he was happy to help at the rally after being called in on his day off.

“On short notice, a lot of people had to cancel trips. But they were glad to do it,” Brennan said. “It was very memorable, in more ways than one.”

Brennan, who controlled the crowd near the Portland Police Memorial, noticed several Porta Potties set up in the middle of the memorial. Brennan had been at the site five days earlier for an annual memorial service and a flag was still set at half mast on the day of the rally.

“There was plenty of room elsewhere so space wasn’t an issue,” Brennan said. “So someone used some really poor decision making, whoever elected to put them there. I mean, it’s somewhat hallowed ground, I guess you could call it.”

After several days, Brennan attached a photo he took to a letter and e-mailed it to dozens of media outlets and the Obama campaign.
Brennan said officers haven’t heard back from the Obama campaign. He said someone owes an apology to the families of the fallen officers.

“Not for a moment do I think that Mr. Obama had anything to do with this,” Brennan said. “But somebody at his campaign at a local level made the decision to put them there. And I just want an acknowledgement: ‘Hey, we made a mistake.'”

A representative with the Obama campaign responded Wednesday morning and said the Porta-Potties were placed at the memorial because of a safety issue for wheelchair access.

I don’t really care what the Obama Campaign personnel state as the reason they set up Porta-Potties on the Police Memorial site. There is NO EXCUSE, NO REASON other than blatant disrespect. The site would have been immediately recognized as what it is, hallowed ground by ANY decent citizen with any morals/conscience whatsoever.
This disrespectful action reflects on Obama. He is their leader and he damn well better get used to being the one the shit lands on when things are done that are NOT the right thing to do. He cannort pass the buck and expect to be the leader of what so far has been the most powerful country in the world. I wouldn’t let the matter ride on the local level. I’d take it straight to Obama to demand he rein in his disgusting supporters attitude towards our Nation, and our Nation’s fallen heroes. McClellan whacks Bush, White House

Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan writes in a surprisingly scathing memoir to be published next week that President Bush “veered terribly off course,” was not “open and forthright on Iraq,” and took a “permanent campaign approach” to governing at the expense of candor and competence.
Among the most explosive revelations in the 341-page book, titled “What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception” (Public Affairs, $27.95):
• McClellan charges that Bush relied on “propaganda” to sell the war.
• He says the White House press corps was too easy on the administration during the run-up to the war.
• He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be “badly misguided.”
• The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them — and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him all the facts.
