Governor Sarah Palin today lauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision upholding the right of Americans to own guns for self-defense, hunting and other purposes. The high court’s 5-4 ruling in District of Columbia vs. Heller affirmed gun rights by striking down the District’s 32-year-old ban on handguns.
“This decision is a victory for all Alaskans and individual Americans. The right to own guns and use them responsibly is something I and many other Alaskans cherish,” Governor Palin said. “I applaud the Court for standing up for the Constitution and the right of Americans to keep and bear arms.”

Lifelong NRA member & champion of right to bear arms
Governor Sarah Palin announced the State of Alaska will join the multi-state amicus brief authored by the State of Texas in support of the Second Amendment right of individual Americans to bear arms. The Texas amicus brief in the case Washington, D.C. v. Heller will be filed by February 11, 2008.
Governor Palin, a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, has long been a champion of the constitutional right to bear arms, as well as a proponent of gun safety programs for Alaska’s youth.
“I am proud to join the State of Texas in support of the Second Amendment,” Governor Palin said. “We need to send a strong message that law-abiding citizens have a right to own firearms, for personal protection, for hunting and for any other lawful purpose.”
Biden: Now is the Moment for me ‘as a US Senator Running for President’ to Put Aside Politics ABC News blog
At a Scranton, Penn., Italian festival this afternoon, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. standing on the side of a black Suburban, took the microphone to address the downtown crowd and explain why Hurricane Gustav precluded his campaigning today.
“I will be back, I’ll be back to campaign in earnest,” Biden said, “but today is not the moment for me to campaign. Today is the moment for me as a United States senator running for president to put aside the national politics and focus on what’s happening down there” in the Gulf Coast.
Biden has still spent more time this election cycle campaigning for president than he has running for vice president.

Cindy Hensley McCain has been disparaged as a trophy wife, a Barbie, an heiress with fancy purses, even the Paris Hilton of politics. But there’s more to the picture than meets the eye.
After her Dad died she became involved with his beer distributing firm and Is now the chairwoman. Sales have doubled since she has taken over from her father.
Yes, Mrs. McCain is the perfectly coifed blonde standing dutifully behind the senator during his speeches. And yes, she wears stylish clothing and carries a Prada purse. And it’s true she doesn’t say much. But feminist critics who write her off as a “stand-by-your-man” shrinking violet are selling her short. In many ways, Cindy McCain stacks up sturdier than Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama. And she’d make a more impressive first lady.
While Obama’s wife has been hating America , complaining about the war and undermining our troops serving in Afghanistan , McCain’s wife has been worrying about her sons who actually are fighting or planning to fight in the war on terror. One, in fact, was until a few months ago deployed in Iraq during some of the worst violence. You don’t hear the McCain’s talk about it, but their 19-year-old Marine, Jimmy, is preparing for his second tour of duty. Their 21-year-old son, Jack, is poised to graduate from Annapolis and also could join the Marines as a second lieutenant. The couple made the decision not to draw attention to their sons out of respect for other families with sons and daughters in harm’s way.
Cindy also says she doesn’t want to risk falling apart on the campaign trail talking about Jimmy who was so young when he enlisted she had to sign consent forms for his medical tests before he could report for duty and potentially upsetting parents of soldiers who are serving or have been killed.
Meghan and her sister Bridget
During a visit to Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Bangladesh, Cindy noticed a dying baby. The orphanage could not provide the medical care needed to save her life. So she brought the child home to America for the surgery she desperately needed. The baby is now their healthy, 16-year-old daughter, Bridget.
Cindy McCain is active with ‘Halo Trust’ – to clear land mines, provide water and food in war ravaged and developing countries.
Though all seven McCain children including two Sen. McCain adopted from his first marriage are supportive of their father, they prefer their privacy to the glare of the campaign trail. Another daughter, Meghan, 23,helps him behind the scenes.
Cindy McCain not only cherishes her children, but also her country, which in an election year filled with America-bashing, is a refreshing novelty. She seethed when she heard Michelle Obama’s unpatriotic remarks that she only recently grew proud of America . “I am very proud of my country,” Mrs. McCain asserted.
She also may be tougher than the other women in the race. While Hillary thinks she’s come under sniper fire on mission trips abroad, Cindy has actually seen violence. She witnessed a boy get blown up by a mine inKuwait during a trip with an international group that removes land mines from war-torn countries.
Mrs. McCain also is a hands-on philanthropist. She sits on the board of Operation Smile, which arranges for plastic surgeons to fix cleft palates and other birth defects. She also has helped organize relief missions to Micronesia
Cindy McCain and her daughter Meghan McCain (2nd R) tour on June 19, 2008 a local hospital in central coastal Nha Trang city where US Operation Smile’s doctors treat local children suffering from facial deformities. Cindy McCain joined Operation Smile’s Board of Directors in April 2005.
During a scuba-diving vacation to the islands, Mrs. McCain took a friend to a local hospital to have a cut treated. She was shocked, and saddened, by what she saw. “They opened the door to the OR, where thesupplies were, and there were two cats and a whole bunch of rats climbi ng out of the sterile supplies,” she recalled. “They had no X-ray machine, no beds. To m e, it was devastating because it was a U.S. trust territory.” As soon as she returned home, she arranged for medical equipment and teams of doctors to be sent to treat the island children.
Michelle Obama may contribute to CARE, which fights global poverty and works to empower poor women. Cindy sits on its board.
While the Democrat women talk about helping the poor and needy, Cindy McCain actually rolls up her sleeves and does it.

Wild Thing’s comment…….
What a difference in Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin compared to the unhappy, not proud of America, chip on her shoulder Michelle Obama.
The difference has nothing to do with their upbringing imo, nor finances, it has to do with what they are made of on the inside. There are a lot of people that have had similar upbringing like Michelle and they don’t have a chip on their shoulder. I remember once after the Gulf War hearing a SSgt. speak , he was a black man and he gave one of the most powerful positive speeches I have ever heard. He spoke of his upbringing and it was not pretty, it was ruff and hard and he came from a place that did not encourage service to ones country but made it more important to join local gangs instead. He made a difference in this world and Michelle could too but it has to come from within.
Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin, two women that are making a difference each in their own unique way. Not because they want to be important and elitist, and above anyone else or worshiped. No, they are the way they are because they have to do what they do, it is in their DNA and character and a passion in their souls to follow their hearts in things that interest them to do things they feel strongly about. They take risks, doing new things they have not done before, meeting new challenges, getting involved, and they put themselves out there in full.
And yes they make mistakes, no one is perfect. But they learn from their mistakes and even that as Cindy has said about her pain pill addiction. She wants others to know about it might help them in some way.
They are moms and worry like other military mothers about their sons and daughters. Taking pride in their child serving our country but also having that part of them far away and in danger, the silent prayer for his/ her safety like other moms feel.
I am so proud of both Cindy and Sarah, they truly are American girls that love our country. God bless them both and their families.
A lot is happening today. It is Labor Day, the Republican Convention begins today and Gustav is coming to our shores.
Thank God for this wonderful country we live in, and for our troops and Veterans that have made it possible for all of us.
Prayers for those in Gustav’s path and keep them safe and their homes safe too for their return when the storm is over.
And prayers for Sarah Palin and John McCain and their families and keep them safe.
Have a great day everyone, we have a chance to win this election and the dark side, the enemy within can’t stand the happiness of the conservatives and the cheers from the growing crowds that have been happening since last Friday with the announcement of Palin for VP.

This is the latest as of 6:20 this morning. Delegates Supportive of GOP Convention Changes Fox News
As delegates descended upon Minneapolis amid reports that the GOP convention would be altered in response to potentially catastrophic Hurricane Gustav, few, if any, voiced opposition to the changes.
Organizers of the Republican National Convention canceled all speeches and program activities for Monday beyond the official procedures that are required under party rules.
“It’s definitely appropriate,” Mississippi delegate Michael Cravens told FOXNews.com. “We know that while the convention is extremely important to our nation, there is nothing more important than the safety of the people affected by the hurricane.”
“When there’s a conflict between governance and politics, you have to choose governance. Neither Bush nor Cheney is on the ballot this year so I think it’s perfectly appropriate for them to be where they need to be, which is with the folks in the affected areas,” said Trey Grayson, a delegate and secretary of state from Kentucky, who agreed with President Bush’s decision to skip out on the convention and instead spend opening night Monday with evacuees and emergency responders in Texas.
“What most people don’t realize is that legally we have to have a convention. We have to nominate John McCain and Sarah Palin otherwise there’s no election in the fall,” Greyson said.
KMOV reported on the Missouri rally: McCain spotlighted Palin at the suburban St. Louis rally — giving her the clean-up speaking spot on a stage erected over the ballfield’s home plate.
She got an enthusiastic reception from the crowd that filled the infield bleachers and spread from the dirt base paths into the outfield grass. At various times, they chanted, “Sarah, Sarah.”
The ball team’s president said the stadium holds about 15,000 for such concert-style events. Republican consultant John Hancock, who served as master of ceremonies for the event, estimated there were about 20,000 people
Wild Thing’s comment…………
They didn’t even have to throw a free concert to get people there like they do at a lot of Obama’s speech’s. The size of McCain’s crowds have increased now since Palin is on board.
The hostess with the moosest NRO
Over in the Frumistan province of the NR caliphate, our pal David is not happy about the Palin pick. I am – for several reasons. First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, “all-American”, but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I’m not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin’ Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who’s done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of “community organizer” and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy. Second, it can’t be in Senator Obama’s interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans’ vice-presidential pick is “even more” inexperienced than the Democrats’ presidential one. Third, real people don’t define “experience” as appearing on unwatched Sunday-morning talk shows every week for 35 years and having been around long enough to have got both the War on Terror and the Cold War wrong. (On the first point, at the Gun Owners of New Hampshire dinner in the 2000 campaign, I remember Orrin Hatch telling me sadly that he was stunned to discover how few Granite State voters knew who he was.) Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain’t run nothin’ but his mouth. She’s done the stuff he’s merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party’s corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol (see his campaign’s thuggish attempt to throttle Stanley Kurtz and Milt Rosenberg on WGN the other night). Fourth, Governor Palin has what the British Labour Party politician Denis Healy likes to call a “hinterland” – a life beyond politics. Whenever Senator Obama attempts anything non-political (such as bowling), he comes over like a visiting dignitary to a foreign country getting shanghaied into some impenetrable local folk ritual. Sarah Palin isn’t just on the right side of the issues intellectually. She won’t need the usual stage-managed “hunting” trip to reassure gun owners: she’s lived the Second Amendment all her life. Likewise, on abortion, we’re often told it’s easy to be against it in principle but what if you were a woman facing a difficult birth or a handicapped child? Been there, done that. Fifth, she complicates all the laziest Democrat pieties. Energy? Unlike Biden and Obama, she’s been to ANWR and, like most Alaskans, supports drilling there. Sixth (see Kathleen’s link to Craig Ferguson below), I kinda like the whole naughty librarian vibe.
