It takes a dedicated Soldier to serve through several wars and continue to wear the uniform, Soldiers like Staff Sgt. Louis J. Swift and Chief Warrant Officer Steven M. Derry. Swift and Derry are Vietnam veterans who currently serve with the 3-142 Assault Helicopter Battalion, a National Guard unit out of Ronkonkama, N.Y.
Swift is currently serving in Iraq as a crew chief and door gunner, jobs he has done for the past 24 years. He is responsible for ensuring his assigned aircraft is safe by performing routine inspections prior to take off.
“I enlisted for Vietnam from 1967-1973,” says Swift, a Detroit, Mich. native. “Then, I enlisted for a one-year term for Desert Storm in 1991.”
This is Derry’s second tour in Iraq. He is currently serving as the officer in charge of 3-142 AHB’s Air Movement Request section. His job includes viewing flight schedules for Soldiers in the battalion, as well as ensuring there is enough fuel and time to execute missions.
These men are quick to note the differences between serving in Iraq and Vietnam.
“Vietnam was a lot more active,” says Swift. “We got rocketed more often and this time it is definitely safer, where we were once flying in t-shirts, we are now wearing 40 pounds of body armor.”
Derry agrees, “It is definitely a lot calmer; there are not as many improvised explosive devices and our aircraft are not under attack as much.”
Serving in two different wars from very different time periods allows veterans to appreciate some of the similarities and differences between the past and the present.
“The attitudes have changed in the past years,” says Swift. “At one point, Soldiers were forced to deploy through the draft, but now that it is an all volunteer Army, there is more pride and dedication from the men and women who wear the uniform.”
Although the times were different, Vietnam still instilled values pertinent to the American Soldier.
“I gained respect for fellow humans,” says Swift. “I also gained pride in my country and in the military.”
This will be the last tour for Swift and Derry, and while they are sad to see their careers come to an end, they are proud to have served their country.
“I am proud that I am still a Soldier,” says Swift. “I am glad that they had me back and while I will be retiring at the end of this tour, it has been a good and rewarding career.”
“I set out to make a career in the military, and that is what I did,” says Derry. “The military allowed me to set up a retirement for my wife and children, and it will be missed.”

Every day Americans learn about another outrageous, irrelevant spending provision in Democrats’ so-called stimulus bill.
There’s money for global warming. There’s money for sex education. There’s money for Amtrak. There’s money for unions. There’s money to buy new cars and office space for bureaucrats. They’re even doing golf course renovations. Who knows, maybe they’ll even fix-up my rain gutter.
But here’s the bottom line: this bill has everything except economic stimulus. It’s just one big, sordid payback for Democrat special interests.
Congress has now become the make-a-wish foundation for greedy politicians.
And unfortunately, it gets much worse. Not only is the bill loaded with pork that will burden, rather than spur, the economy, but it also contains a dangerous – and overlooked – provision to begin handing over Americans’ healthcare freedom to bureaucrats. It’s called “Comparative Effectiveness Research.” While it sounds innocuous, the worst big-government programs always do. In short, comparative effectiveness research is a tool for bureaucrats take your health care decisions away from you and your doctor. Washington Liberals plan to use this “research” to determine which medical treatments are, or are not, ‘cost-effective,’ as they determine.
Just read the words from the House Appropriations Committee’s own report on the stimulus regarding this provision:
“Those items, procedures, and interventions… that are found to be less effective and in some cases, more expensive, will no longer be prescribed.”
In reaction, 63 patient advocacy groups including the AIDS Institute, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, and the American Association for Cancer Research, have written a letter to Congress, expressing their concerns. They explained that this provision could lead to “restrictions on patients’ access to treatments and physicians’ and other providers’ ability to deliver care that best meets the needs of the individual patient.” A federal health care board proposed and envisioned by several leading Democrats will result in comparative effectiveness research being used to ration health care in America. Rather than patients and doctors making decisions about what treatments or drugs make sense for you and your loved ones, a federal health care board will control which health care options are available.
Using “comparative effectiveness,” countries which already have government-run healthcare deny patients life-saving medical treatment. It’s been used, for instance, by the UK’s National Center for Health and Clinical Excellence to repeatedly denying breakthrough drugs to citizens suffering with breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and multiple sclerosis.
Consider the case of UK resident George Robinson, a lung cancer patient who died while waiting for the life-extending drug Tarceva. The National Center for Health and Clinical Excellence has recently deemed the drug to not be cost-effective. And now, 2,000 lung cancer patients may soon face Robinson’s fate.
Government-run healthcare, which rations care to hold down cost, is a menace to free people everywhere. There are many thousands who would be alive today but for the monstrous myth that nationalized medicine works. And Comparative Effectiveness Research – shamelessly concealed in the stimulus bill – marches America toward that dreaded future when our most private medical decisions are made by far-off elites in Washington, D.C.
That day is now closer than ever. Recall that Tom Daschle – a leading force for government-run healthcare – nearly became Director of Health and Human Services. We dodged a bullet with Daschle, but the fight against government control of healthcare has only begun.
And in that fight, we must remember that freedom is as precious as it is vulnerable. It takes constant vigilance to preserve. But when taken for only a short time it may take generations to return. For the sake of our children, and theirs after, we must defend this basic freedom. We must not let history record that it was lost the day we were standing watch.

The United States Senate yesterday afternoon passed the largest spending bill in history by a 61-37 straight Democrat party-line vote, assisted by only three so-called Republican senators: Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. 216 out of 219 Congressional Republicans opposed this immense spending bill that will cost the American taxpayers nearly $1.3 trillion dollars as passed by the Senate.
The huge spending bill will next emerge as a Conference Report that must once again pass both chambers (in the Senate by a 60-vote margin). According to Reid, the vote on final passage could happen as early as Friday.
“I’m shocked that any senator would say ‘that’s the bill we passed, take it or leave it,’” Hoyer said. Yet Democrats are keenly aware that final passage depends on at least two of the three RINO votes from Specter, Collins and Snowe and, of course, the Democrats holding their line. Socialized Medicine Hidden in Bill
I asked House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) on Tuesday if House Republicans would address in conference the revelation by Bloomberg News on Monday (Ruin Your Health With the Obama Stimulus Plan ) that the foundations and action items for the government takeover of healthcare were secreted deep in the rotting bowels of the 778-page Senate bill.
Cantor told me, “The comparative effectiveness issue has been around for quite awhile and it makes the case again that its insertion in to this bill demonstrates that the focus has not been on job sustaining and creation. This is not a job sustaining and creating provision. Some support the notion that we ought to go down the pike of allowing CMS [Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services] now determine what kind of treatment takes place for a particular kind of patient and determine his or her doctor. That’s the kind of discussion we can have in regular order — that’s a discussion that needs some airing — but it doesn’t belong in a stimulus bill.”
I asked Cantor if Republicans would effort pulling this in conference. “I’m hopeful, certainly it’s on our list of objections,” Cantor said. “If we’re talking stimulus, why are we doing this? It’s not a decision of doing something or doing nothing, it’s about being smart and getting it right. That has no business in a stimulus bill.”

A lawsuit that accuses Congress of failing to investigate President Obama’s birthplace before approving the Electoral College vote giving him the presidency has been amended to include additional claims of rights violations, including unequal treatment, because Congress did such an investigation into GOP candidate Sen. John McCain.
That word comes from Mario Apuzzo, the lawyer handling the case on which WND previously has reported.
The case raises many of the same arguments as dozens of other cases that have flooded into courtrooms around the nation since the November election.
The case was brought by Apuzzo on behalf of Charles F. Kerchner Jr., Lowell T. Patterson, Darrell James Lenormand and Donald H. Nelson Jr. It names as defendants Barack Hussein Obama II, the U.S., Congress, the Senate, House of Representatives and former Vice President Dick Cheney along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Apuzzo told WND that Congress last year raised the issue of whether McCain was a “natural born” citizen, a requirement set out in the U.S. Constitution for the president, because of his birth to U.S. citizens in the Panama Canal Zone.
According to a report in the Washington Post, the Senate unanimously declared McCain to be a “natural born” citizen, meeting the demand of Article 2 of the Constitution, which states, “no person except a natural born citizen … shall be eligible to the office of president.”
“Ultimately there has never been any real resolution of this issue. Congress cannot legislatively change the meaning of the Constitution,” she told the newspaper, saying a constitutional amendment or a U.S. Supreme Court ruling would be the way to reach a determination.
However, even though his clients wrote to Congress requesting a similar review of Obama’s birthplace, they were refused.
“The question is: Why do you do it for McCain, but not Obama,” Apuzzo told WND.
More specifically, those who doubted McCain’s eligibility had an opportunity for a review but not those who doubt Obama.

Obama preparing to lift sanctions against Syria NICOSIA
President Barack Obama has decided on a new U.S. ambassador to Syria and is expected to lift sanctions against a nation charged with aiding Al Qaida in Iraq and secretly building a nuclear reactor with North Korean assistance.
Diplomatic sources said Obama, in consultation with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has asked Frederic Hof to become the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since 2005. The sources said Hof, a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Middle East Policy Council, agreed to take the post.
“There will be an announcement very soon,” a diplomat said.
The sources said the Obama administration was expected to suspend U.S. sanctions on Syria’s military and energy programs.
Syria has been listed by the State Department as among the State Sponsors of Terrorism since December 29, 1979.
The sources said Obama sent emissaries to Syria in September 2008 and pledged that if elected he would reconcile with the regime of President Bashar Assad. After his election victory, they said, Obama sent another message that promised to appoint an ambassador within the first weeks of his administration.
Obama’s intention to reconcile with Iran and Syria has been supported by the Democratic majority in Congress.

US lawmakers introduce bill to ease Cuba travel

Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have introduced a bill to permit US citizens unrestricted travel to Cuba, according to the Library of Congress website.
The “Freedom To Travel to Cuba Act,” which would overturn the 46-year-old US policy strictly limiting travel to the Caribbean island, will be subject to debate after being referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The bill, introduced by Massachusetts Democrat Bill Delahunt and backed by eight other lawmakers, states that “the President may not regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or legal residents.”
Currently US nationals are supposed to request Treasury Department permission to visit Cuba. They are not routinely allowed to spend money in Cuba — the Americas’ only one-party communist state — creating an effective travel ban.
US President Barack Obama has said he would speak with all foreign leaders in sharp contrast to successive US administrations which have sought to isolate Havana.
But he has offered few details on how far he might be willing to go in reaching out to Cuba.
During his campaign for the presidency, Obama said the Cuba embargo had not helped bring democracy to the island, led by President Raul Castro, 77.
But so far he has said only that he would end some sanctions on Cuban-Americans traveling to the island, and eliminate limits on their remittances to relatives in Cuba.
The neighboring countries do not have full diplomatic relations, and the United States has an economic embargo on Cuba.

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back.
Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall.
When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit. The complaint:

At 9 a. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer’s recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I’m sure you didn’t hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques
as I gave them their son’s flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured..
A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.
The letter writer asks, ‘Whom do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.
Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you….Jesus Christ and the Am erican Soldier.

It will make it illegal to own a firearm unless it is registered with the database in Washington D.C. As a gun owner you will have to be finger printed, you will be required to provide your DL#, SS#, you must maintain a valid address at all times, submit to mental and physical health records being put on file, you will also be required to file any address changes and any ownership changes even if a private sale. Each update will cost $25 and if you fail to comply you will lose your right to own firearms. This bill and its language mirror almost completely one defeated last year in the House of Representatives by soon to be Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Will we the citizenry be as lucky this time?
Pass this on to everyone who believes in strict Constitutionalism and remember that laws only apply to those who obey them. Criminals by definition and nature do not abide by laws. New laws and restrictions only apply to the law abiding citizen and are not written with the criminal in mind. With guns, it is not about having laws on the books to prosecute individuals, it is about taking guns away from the people so that no one has them in the first place.
One last item to note, when assuming power and creating a fascist state, Hitler was a proponent of strong gun laws because a disarmed populace was much easier to control than an armed one. The kings of old also outlawed weapons of any kind in any region that they conquered to quell the ability of the citizens to up rise against them.
The Founding Fathers of this nation understood all of the above and because of this they included the second amendment in the constitution. In fact, they knew that at some point in every society’s life span that the need for the population to arise came about. To this end they made the right to keep and bear arms against a tyrannical state an absolute right that could not be revoked. They did this because the first thing tyrants and despots do is to remove a population’s right to defend themselves When this is done, the tyrants have no problem with the destruction of society as we know it.

Directs the Attorney General to establish and maintain a federal record of sale system.
Prohibits:
(1) transferring a firearm to any person other than a licensee, unless the transfer is processed through a licensed dealer in accordance with national instant criminal background check system requirements, with exceptions;
(2) a licensed manufacturer or dealer from failing to comply with reporting and record keeping requirements of this Act;

In these harsh times we all seem to be looking for ways to stretch our meagre salaries or savings out. I hope my following suggestions may give some ideas how to best manage in these dark days:

Glory Hole – Monticello Dam, California
A glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be drained from the reservoir.
This is the ‘Glory Hole’ at Monticello dam, and it’s the largest in the world of this type of spillway – its size enabling it to consume 14,400 cubic feet of water every second.
Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah
This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth.
