TRENTON, N.J.
Republican Chris Christie took an early lead in a tight New Jersey governor’s race against Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine, with an Associated Press exit poll showing independent voters strongly favoring the GOP candidate.
With 44 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Christie had 49 percent of the vote and Corzine about 44. Independent candidate Chris Daggett, originally feared as a potential spoiler, had about 5 percent.
Republicans surged to victory in governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey on Tuesday, wresting control from Democrats in both states as independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for the GOP. It was a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.
Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell’s victory in the Virginia governor’s race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie’s ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.
The outcomes were sure to feed discussion about the state of the electorate, the status of the diverse coalition that sent Obama to the White House and the limits of the president’s influence—on the party’s base of support and on moderate current lawmakers he needs to advance his legislative priorities.
His signature issue of health care reform was dealt a blow hours before polls closed when Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid signaled that Congress may not complete health care legislation this year, missing Obama’s deadline and pushing debate into a congressional election year.

Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell’s victory in Virginia over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds was a triumph for a GOP looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008. It also was a setback for the White House in a swing state that was a crucial part of Obama’s electoral landslide just a year ago. The president had personally campaigned for Deeds.
Bob McDonnell Virginia Governor’s Race Victory Speech
Republican Bob McDonnell easily won the Virginia governor’s race Tuesday as independent voters who helped deliver the state to President Barack Obama handed the party a victory. McDonnell will be the state’s first GOP governor in eight years.

Foxnews Projects Democrat Bill Owens Wins NY 23

Wild Thing’s comment…….
I would have liked to see the Conservative win in NY but it wasn’t to be. Fortunately, for a virtual unknown, he had a great showing.
Hoffman did great in NY23. For a virtual unknown to almost win is fantastic. That does send a message as well. What I can’t believe is that over 6700 people voted for Dede, who wasn’t even running! Without her, Hoffman would have won the seat. Oh well, we got VA and NJ back. Congress and the Senate ought to realize we mean business now and that they better start using that lump 3 feet above their butts or they can and probably will be terminated-and that goes for both sides of the aisle!!!
Christie’s speech was great last night. Run him for higher office. But I also watched CNN to see what they would say about Virginia, New Jersey, and New York. They had Wobblies like Gergen on and almost all the discussion about the elections that took place yesterday seemed to be about what a loser Sarah Palin is. Un Believable!
We won two out of three. It was almost three out of three. I hope this is a preview of the 2010 elections.
It is difficult for me to understand liberal Repubs. As the NY23 vote shows as well as the Senators from Maine and the Rockerfeller Repubs there are a lot of very liberal Repubs in the Northeast. I wonder why they call themselves Repubs when they are more liberal than many Dems.
Good point Horace, they blame Sarah Palin for Hoffman’s defeat. He was a ‘virtual Unknown’, and got 50,000 votes not bad for an unknown, all she did was endorse him. Hell, they don’t mention the Gingrich endorsed the Part Elephant-mostly Jack-ass, and she dropped out. Name recognition and another campaign and Hoffman will be formidable.
But losing New Jersey, has got to be a thorn in their side, probably a spear, thats got to hurt and the man-child even campaigned for him. CNN can’t justify that one.
Now the Blue dogs have got to be looking over their shoulder and wondering whether to vote for all this crap from obama and Pealosi.
Just the beginning of their demise.
It was a good day for America and I really
think it will continue too.
The left cannot change their spots and they
won’t even know how to make things right
and lay off our Constitutional rights etc.
Plus the taxes that they incure from their
horrid anti health care and cap and trade
are a real threat to our country in so many
ways.
Lynn, many people will vote straight party line and that’s what most likely a majority of her 6700 votes were. There are folks who will vote for Daffy Duck is it has a “D” or “R” next to their name.
Scarzofoso or what ever her name, was on the ballot in two places. Republican and Working families ticket and she had quit, she dropped out because she could not win and decided to split the vote so the democrat could pick up the seat so much for a loyal republican.
Owens was also on the ticket in two places democrat and Independent. Hoffman was the only one on a single ballot Conservative, for a virtual unknown a month ago, and no campaign money, Scarface got 900 thou from the Republicans Owens got his share and Hoffman got none but he almost won.
