Key Senate Democrat Concedes Republican Support Needed for Health Overhaul
Sen. Kent Conrad, the chairman of the powerful budget committee says Senate Democrats alone cannot pass President Obama’s ambitious overhaul of how Americans receive health care.

Senate Democrats are going to need help from Republicans to get President Obama’s ambitious plan to reinvent the health care system over the goal line, a top lawmaker acknowledged on Sunday.
“Look, there are not the votes for Democrats to do this just on our side of the aisle,” said Sen. Kent Conrad, the chairman of the powerful budget committee.
Even though the Democrats enjoy a majority in the Senate, some are skittish about the financial or political costs of the proposals.
And Republicans said they will continue their opposition to a plan they claim is simply a government takeover of private decisions.
“Republicans want to protect the right of Americans to make their own health care decisions, to pick their own doctors and their own plans,” said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. “We could have a plan in a few weeks if the goal is not a government takeover. We’ve never seen the government operate a plan of any kind effectively and at the budgets we talked about.”
Both sides said they want to improve the system and provide care for almost 50 million Americans who lack health insurance coverage, but they remain deeply divided over how to reach that goal. Republicans said the longer the delay, the more the public understands the stakes of a policy that has vexed lawmakers for decades
That final piece, however, will require GOP backing — something Sen. Mitch McConnell said was unlikely. The Senate minority leader said congressional Democrats are having difficulty selling a health care bill to their own members.
“The only thing bipartisan about the measure so far is the opposition to it,” said McConnell, R-Ky.
Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., told FOX News that it doesn’t look likely that the Senate Finance Committee will complete their version this week.
“I think it’s unlikely we will produce a bill before the August recess,” he said. “That’s a good thing. A good thing to go home in August and hear what constituents think we need to do.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, meanwhile, said she has the votes in her chamber to move forward with the plan despite the same concerns among fiscally conservative fellow Democrats.
“When I take this bill to the floor, it will win. We will move forward, it will happen,” Pelosi said.
Wild Thing’s comment………
I pray no Republican will break ranks on this and also on the Cap andn Trade bill. The RATs had best NOT get a single GOP vote. Not One!

This is rationing of Health Care for anyone who does not qualify as Healthy. Your age will also determine what Health care is available to you.
They want to put a value on what your life is worth. You as the individual do not determine this, some nitwit Bureaucrat in Washington will determing that for you. This can work against children with serious diseases, such as Leukemia and other forms of childhood diseases. Then at the other end of the spectrum is us older folks who will get our Pre-Death interview every 5 years and be encouraged to help the system by dying off.
But where does this process end, when some no name bureaucrat has that kind of power it won’t take much to move the fences in so that we are killing off people, who would otherwise have some time left, so the system will be more cost effieicent.
This is Nazi Health Care. the Joseph Mengele Health care system. When you look at the forebears of this ‘system’ Sanger, Wachter, and a guy named Singer, they are after what Margaret Sanger referred to a pulling out the ‘Human Weeds’.
If we do not defeat this Health Care Bill, ‘Soylent Green’ will become a reality and will create a life of dehumanization for anyone unfortunate enough to be born in this country. The purveyors of this Health Care System are even talking about Abortions as late as Two Years old. This isn’t Health Care it is Murder of the inconvenient all the ultimate promotion of the STATE.
This is some sick shit.
Hey this is the solution they have schemed to stem the baby boomer’s onslaught to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and their systematic failures. The only difference is it’s the youth that are pushing all the agenda’s neglecting the fact that they too will face old age and it’s infirmities. We were all bullet proof and invincible before age 40. BTW Chrissie, I don’t plan on voting for any incumbent!!!
I worry about the New England Republican Senators maybe supporting this horrendous bill. Hopefully Senator Corad is correct and there are not enough Democrat Senators backing the bill.
This proposed obamacare bill will help a very few people in America while limiting the care that most of us have now. As Mark and Jack point out this bill is based on limiting the needs of expensive old people and medically needy youngsters. At the same time it will be a very expensive plan with most of the money going to government and middlemen in one form or another. This plan itsself is a deadly Ponzi scheme to answer the needs of several other Ponzi schemes.
I’ve noticed they are grouping their serfs. Smokers, people with obesity problems, the elderly, the chronically ill. Many news stories the past few days on obesity. Not by accident I’m sure. Very much like the Nazi’s.
I don’t vote for ANY incumbents.
We don’ need no stinkin’ career politicians – EVER!.
I’ve already informed my ‘representation’ if they vote for ObamaCare with the federal office holder exemption, I will do all I can to make sure they are unemployed.
Thank you everyone soooo much for your
input on this and your information too.
I agree this bill is totally sick and ugly
that it is even hard to believe they
would even consider putting the things
they have into this bill. What horrible
people do even think this way they have
to write things like this.
Same here from me, I have called each
office holder and told them the same thing
if they vote for this they will never
again have my vote.
