Senate passes gun bill in response to rampage
WASHINGTON
(Reuters)
Congress, prodded by the deadliest shooting rampage in modern American history, passed legislation on Wednesday designed to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.
Without objection, the Senate and House of Representatives approved the measure, which would bolster background checks for gun buyers, and sent it to President George W. Bush to sign.
The measure would be the first major new gun-control law in more than a decade. It was drafted after a deranged gunman killed himself and 32 others in April at Virginia Tech university.
Wild Thing’s comment……..
And what is the criterion of “mental illness” required to deprive a citizen of his right to keep and bear arms? There are certainly enough people who think anyone who actually believes they need a gun is mentally unstable. There are already laws that prevent people who have been diagnosed with Mental illness from buying guns.
Political Correctness prevented his case from being reported and political correctness disarmed the victims.
Just more government overcontrol resulting from an incident that may have been greater than it needed to be because government control prohibited legal carry on campus.
Not surprising ~ especially from the Dems and since the Republicans have been going bluer and bluer this past decade. Heck, just look at the presidential candidates we have to choose from there on the right.
After all, one of the first ways for the government (read Nanny State) to take control of its citizens is to disarm them. This usually is followed by government controlled everything else. Universal healthcare, anyone? The government doctors will be diagnosing us.
And what is this going to do to all the Vets coming back that have treatment for PTSD? It’ll be in their records…
If one student or professor at VT had had a firearm, it wouldn’t have been the massacre it was.
Time to buy more ammo.
Senate Passes Gun Bill ~ Response To Virginia Tech University Killings
I am not sure but isn’t the United States the only country in the world that citizens are STILL allowed to own firearms ?
Since the ‘All American Union’ is just around the corner, and the party of the president doesn’t really matter. It seems to me this is only a matter of time before the gun restrictive laws will actually become confiscatory laws on all fire arms held by private owners.
They came for the smokers, now it will be the fat people, and next will be firearms. They tell you where you can smoke or not, insurance companies give better rates if you don’t smoke, the Obese will get the same treatment.
Schools are now asking kids, how many guns are in the home, who do they belong to.
Now they are telling us what kind of light bulb we can buy.
In Pennsylvania, the Conservation Police can walk right onto your property and have a look see of what is going on, under the auspices of catching paochers.
So much for the 5th amendment. unreasonable searches and seizures.
It is not only the 2nd Amendment that is under assault it is the Constitution that is under assault. And our rights as a Free people that is under assault.
Ditto Mark!!! Now they are going after caffein in California.
Tom it is, and all this government control will be even worse if we keep having more and more dems in control.
Yankeemom……”If one student or professor at VT had had a firearm, it wouldn’t have been the massacre it was.”….I agree so much.
Mark……oh my gosh I didn’t know this…..
“Schools are now asking kids, how many guns are in the home, who do they belong to”….that is very scary.
