(Bloomberg News) — Barack Obama may consider introducing a tax on carbon emissions to help cut the U.S. budget deficit after winning a second term as president, according to HSBC Holdings Plc.
A tax starting at $20 a metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent and rising at about 6 percent a year could raise $154 billion by 2021, Nick Robins, an analyst at the bank in London, said today in an e-mailed research note, citing Congressional Research Service estimates. “Applied to the Congressional Budget Office’s 2012 baseline, this would halve the fiscal deficit by 2022,” Robins said.
Hurricane Sandy sparked discussion on climate protection in the election after presidential candidates focused on other debates, HSBC said. A continued Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives means Obama’s scope for action will be limited, Robins said. Cap-and-trade legislation stalled in the U.S. Senate after narrowly passing the house in 2009.
North American discharges fell 1.3 percent last year amid slowing economic growth. In China, the world’s biggest emitter, greenhouse gases from fuel use rose more than 9 percent in 2011, according to BP Plc statistics published on June 13
Wild Thing’s comment..……….
Happy now those of you that did not vote for Romney??????????????????????
Veterans Day is coming this Sunday. No man wants to die. No man wants to go fight battles in some God forsaken land away from loved ones. No man wants to loose a limb or be disfigured for life. No man wants to fight a war but they do. They do it because they know it has to be done to preserve their freedoms, families, and nation. They don’t like it but they do it willingly or unwillingly but THEY DO IT. Those people who chose to not vote because they didn’t like Romney as a candidate or chose to vote for their third party candidate aren’t worthy to breath the same air as these Veterans. I’m sorry folks, that’s just the way I feel right now. Our Nation and way of life was on the line and these people chose not to fight the battle because their favorite didn’t get the nomination or they just didn’t like Mormons or what ever their stupid reason was. They’re no different than those who went to Canada during the Vietnam War. They deserted their nation in its time of need. Now, we’re all going to pay the price but they at least can smugly say, “I didn’t vote for either of them”.
As a 20 year veteran of the greatest Navy Earth has ever seen, I am saddened and frustrated by the results. As a California resident, I am enraged by how many idiotic liberals call my state home. It has gotten to the point where it is nearly pointless to vote Republican here. It took all of 22 seconds after the polls closed for all 55 electoral votes to be awarded to Obama. The first state to secede needs to be ready…they’re going to get flooded by true blue Americans.
Patrick, that may be Texas.
