Obama Claims “80% of Americans” Support Tax Increases in a Debt Limit Deal
Obama arguing yesterday at his Press Conference that “the American People are sold” on raising taxes as part of a Debt Limit deal. Of course, Obama will not use the word “taxes.” It’s always, “a balanced approach,” or “revenues.” What he wants to do is raise taxes on the very people who start and expand businesses, creating jobs.
Obama claims that “80%” of Americans want higher taxes! A huge lie of course.
From The Hill
Obama on Friday kept up the pressure on Republicans to agree to revenue increases in a deal to raise the debt ceiling, claiming 80 percent of the public supports Democrats’ demand for tax increases.
“The American people are sold,” Obama said. “The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically.”
Throughout the press conference, Obama blasted Republicans for ignoring what he said is the will of the American people by rejecting tax increases that would balance out spending cuts in a debt package.
“This is not an issue of salesmanship to the American people,” Obama said. “I hope [Republicans are] not just listening to lobbyists and special interests … I hope they’re listening to the American people as well,” Obama said, citing “poll after poll” showing Republican voters, as well as Democrats, believe in taking “a balanced approach” — including both increased revenues and spending cuts in a plan to cut the deficit.
Obama repeated his warning that the country is “running out of time” to avert a financial “Armageddon.”
“We should not even be this close on a deadline,” Obama said. “This is something we should have accomplished earlier.”
“We asked the president to lead, we asked him to put forward a plan, not a speech — a real plan — and he hasn’t. We will,” Speaker John Boehner said (R-Ohio) before Obama’s press conference.
Obama also shot down GOP calls for a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution, saying “we don’t need a constitutional amendment to do our jobs.”
Wild Thing’s comment……..
“Obama said 80 percent of Americans are on his side in the debate over what to include in the debt package.”
Then according to his massive lie, count me in the 20%.
He better stop listening to those the voices in his head.
It’s been two years since New York Times White House correspondent Jeff Zeleny at a formal Presidential press conference in the East Room of the White House seriously and directly asked the President,
“During these first one hundred days, what has enchanted you the most about serving in this office ?”
The President should have ignored the question, asked how he ever got into the White House press corps, told the reporter to sit down, and called for the next question.
But no, the President actually answered it joyfully, and at great length.
Enchantment !
It’s now 2011 and what we have today is not just an absence of real men, but more importantly we have excessive advocacy journalism bred from a menagerie of the groundless pop culture of on-line computers, electronic social media, and all this twitter nonsense without a strong base of grounded historical guidance in the expected conduct of journalists’ vital and essential work.
Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth and its first loyalty is to its citizens. Its essence lies in its discipline of verification. Its practitioners must maintain an unbiased independence from those they cover and must serve always as a our country’s independent monitor of power and the conduct of its elected officials. This is serious.
The work and conduct of the fourth estate is so vital, so important and so very essential within our republic, if we are to have one.
Searching, probing, ceaselessly questioning, pen and pad in hand, worn shoes on the pavement, hound dog investigating reporters have been replaced by advocacy journalists that today sadly are not much more than soft news gatherers and compliant servile lap dogs to this administration we have in the White House today.
Just last month, there was this media frenzy over former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s 12,000 e-mails. Nothing was found, not even a phrase taken out of context by the way, but where was all this spirited scrutiny and round the clock probing that citizens expect of journalists four years ago when the current occupant of the White House aspired to be President of our great republic ?
Where is some spirited scrutiny today when he says,
“The American people are sold.” 80% of the American people want higher taxes we are now told by the President of the United States.
For the past two and half years we’ve had limitless profligate federal spending of multiple trillions of dollars, money our government doesn’t have.
Where I ask is the outrage ?
This is not Presidential leadership uniting the American people during very hard times.
It is the willful, deliberate incitement of class warfare by an American President dividing his own people.
This is not the expected behavior of a chief executive responsible for the administration of government.
And so now that there might be some fiscal constraints towards administering our federal government, does this President rise to the occasion with some plan for prioritizing spending and some decisive action ?
No, he slides and slithers.
He submits to the easy street he has always known, to the easy path of fear mongering and demagoguery and taking even more from the very American people he and his administration are supposed to serve and protect.
80% of the American people want more taxes ?
How much more can be extracted from a private sector that struggles to get by and provides for everyone including all those in the public sector ?
Look at this latest Gallup poll giving any Republican a 47% to 39% win over this President:

or this latest Gallup job approval showing 48% of Americans disapproving and a 44% approval:

“The American people are sold.” 80% of the American people want higher taxes we are now told by the President of the United States.
This is a menagerie. He is delusional, and it seems more like desperate.
I conclude that yesterday was a feeble attempt at hypnotizing people.
And for some, including all of those in that same press room, I submit it’s working.
Hard to add anything to what Carlos says.
My only comment re: Dear Leader”s Pronouncement.
“Statistics are like loose women, you can do anything you want with them”.
He’s not only a liar but he’s also delusional, of course his minions will believe that, but who cares.
Sean what you say about statistics is wrong. Mr. Obama’s statistics are the female impersonators of loose women. Like the hookers at Pearl Harbor the person next to you shooting back at Obama may stay in shape on a brass pole.
Carlos is right the president is hallucinating. I have never heard of a time when 80% of the American People favored a tax increase. I think the Carlos meant that the statistic the President reference are a mirage. The press corps is a menagerie.
He had to have pulled that one right out of his ass!
Carlos, thank you soooo much for all you posted.
Thank you everyone so much.
