Greenpeace Opposes Waxman-Markey
Climate Bill not Science-Based; Benefits Polluters
Washington, D.C., United States — In advance of tomorrow’s vote on the American Clean Energy and Security Act in the House of Representatives, Greenpeace USA Deputy Campaigns Director Carroll Muffett issued the following statement:
“Since the Waxman-Markey bill left the Energy and Commerce committee, yet another fleet of industry lobbysists has weakened the bill even more, and further widened the gap between what Waxman-Markey does and what science demands. As a result, Greenpeace opposes this bill in its current form. We are calling upon Congress to vote against this bill unless substantial measures are taken to strengthen it. Despite President Obama’s assurance that he would enact strong, science-based legislation, we are now watching him put his full support behind a bill that chooses politics over science, elevates industry interests over national interest, and shows the significant limitations of what this Congress believes is possible.
“As it comes to the floor, the Waxman-Markey bill sets emission reduction targets far lower than science demands, then undermines even those targets with massive offsets. The giveaways and preferences in the bill will actually spur a new generation of nuclear and coal-fired power plants to the detriment of real energy solutions. To support such a bill is to abandon the real leadership that is called for at this pivotal moment in history. We simply no longer have the time for legislation this weak.
“With many others in the environmental, faith and consumer rights communities, Greenpeace has expressed tremendous concern about the role of offsets in this legislation. Unless strictly controlled, the abuse of offsets could prevent real emission reductions for more than a decade. The decision to move authority over offsets from EPA to the Department of Agriculture further reduces the likelihood that such controls will be maintained and increases the likelihood they will undermine real reductions.
This legislation sends a strong and unmistakable signal to the world that the United States is not yet ready to show the leadership necessary to reach a strong agreement at Copenhagen in December. Already, we are seeing the impact of this signal as one country after another retreats from the aggressive targets needed to avoid catastrophic climate change.
We call on the Congress to reject this bill and begin immediate and urgent work on legislation that treats seriously the dire threat of climate change. We call on President Obama to move beyond rhetoric and deliver on his commitments to “restore science to its proper place” and to lead the world in addressing climate change.
Wild Thing’s comment…….
Greenpeace says it doesn’t do enough, so they oppose it.
Enviro groups are never satisfied, not that I can ever remember. No matter how horrible a bill is like this Cap and Trade which is beyond horrible, the enviro’s would want more. Like all right wingers to stop breathing or something.
….Thank you Mark for sending this to me.

And that farking bill passed in the House. NINE Republicans voted for it. It’s maddening. It’s so full of “concessions” which is their new term for “pork” to get these bastards and bastardettes to vote for it. Who in their right mind could vote for something that will end jobs and yank up power bills and prices on everyone?
Everyday it’s some new attrocity with this gang. They need to all go!
From Boehner’s attempted Filabuster, there is exactly One copy of the bill. Not one Congressman has read the bill. Even Waxman who sponsored the bill doesn’t know what is in it.
So what are they voting on, legislation they have no idea of the impact when enacted. When it runs amok and it most certainly will, we will get apologies from alot of congressmen who voted for it and never read it. Of course it will be too late.
Wax Man doesn’t know what is in it, not becuase he didn’t read it, but because he can’t read and comprehend. In my generation, in grammar school, you learned reading comprehension. I do know that a large number of my railroad buddies may be out of work as a result of the cap and tax passage. They maintain the rail lines that those 7,000 foot long coal trains run on.
When my electric bill doubles, little henry wax man will get a bill for the difference in what I pay now and what it is going to be. I hold him personally responsible. There is a concept in that idiot locker in DC, personal accountability.
All 219 of them are traitors in every sense of the word. Because by weakening the industrial base of the Republic, it gives aid and comfort to our enemies.
And this Old Retired Petty Officer is still a better man on any single day than this excuse for a “man” wax man.
“…the enviro’s would want more. Like all right wingers to stop breathing or something.”
Do you understand how accurate that statement just might be? Liberals and Enviros (progressives) want a severe reduction in population in order to have a sort of “correct” people and they also probably want to eventually bring about the extiction of the human race out of empathy to prevent our own destruction or the destruction of the planet from all out war or something like that. But I’m just thinking here; after all, what do I know? I’m just a failed product of our illustrious public education system (A Reagan Conservative).
Eden, I agree, and I wish they would give
one day off from all of this, a week would
be better, of not doing something against our
country. But they are at it 24-7 non stop
like now they are in power they are bound
and determinded to destroy America as fast
as they can.
Mark, it sure will be too late.
What a difference between back then
and now. Our Founding Fathers would
have insisted on reading these bills,
and then heck fought about them and
debated into the wee small hours of
the morning. They knew what words
means and the cost of what they might
say to an entire country and it’s
future.
Not today, now they just want to be
elected, then they worry about making
the left side of the isle mad at them.
Glenn Cassel AMH1(AW) USN RET, well
said!!!
That is so horrible about your railroad
buddies and how this will effect them.
I hate what these people Waxman etc. are
doing to our countries people.
There is going to be more and more
rage across our land at what this bill
does to people. The Senate has got to
vote no on this or we are doneo.
JohnE PFC U.S. Army, yes I do. When I
typed it I realized what I was thinking
was really the truth. Scary.
Al Gore wrote a book about population
control and how there are too many
people on the earth effect the climate
and he worships GIA ( mother earth).
He is a looney toon and it goes dowwn
hill even further from there.
