September 19, 2007:
Britain is equipping its commando and infantry units with a new armored truck, the four ton Supacat MWMIK 4×4. It is armored on the bottom to give protection from mines, but is largely open up top.
The vehicle mounts 12.7mm and 7.62mm machine-guns, as well as a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. The Supacat chassis has been around for a while, and comes in 6×6 versions as well. It has excellent cross country capabilities. Top speed of the MWMIK is 80 kilometers an hour, and the vehicle normally carries four people.
The initial buy, mainly for the SAS commandos, was 130, but more are planned.
But the boys are sitting ducks out in the open!
Nick… A Rat Patrol II remake? And Lynn, when I think of the Alamo and her ‘COME AND TAKE IT’ flag… I’ll think of you and your proud Texas family heritage!
This vehicle may be somewhat mineproof, but there is no crew protection from small arms fire, shrapnel or kids with rocks.
Just like the Brits to protect the truck, the SAS troops are replaceable. They need to let the Israeli’s figure out what modifications need to be made before they get serious about full issue. Reminds me of the U.S. MC mule only larger. Anyone remember the M422 Mighty Mite? Heh heh Darth, those SAS troops must be thinking “there ain’t no basement in the Alamo”
Great. Armored undercarriage, run-flat tires but little crew protection. This thing is for running roads at high speed, not combat.
Lynn I know it is the craziest thing I have seen for protection.
Darth, it looks like that doesn’t it, another Rat Patrol show.
Tom I agree, I think this is a very bad idea and very dangerous.
OH sure they are protected from below but totally exposed from the top and sides.
Jack, I was so suprised I thought the Brits wanted to protect their soldiers more then this.
Rhod, it says more are planned and they have ordered 130 of these monsters. I would rather be on foot I think.
