The Senate on Thursday endorsed President Bush’s plans to prosecute and interrogate terror suspects.

The 65-34 vote means the bill could reach the president’s desk by week’s end. The House passed nearly identical legislation on Wednesday and was expected to approve the Senate bill on Friday, sending it on to the White House.
The bill would create military commissions to prosecute terrorism suspects. It also would prohibit blatant abuses of detainees but grant the president flexibility to decide what interrogation techniques are legally permissible.
The White House and its supporters have called the measure crucial in the anti-terror fight, but some Democrats said it left the door open to abuse, violating the U.S. Constitution in the name of protecting Americans.
While Democrats warned the bill could open the way for abuse, Republicans said defeating the bill would put the country at risk of another terrorist attack.

Good catch WT, it’s striking how many of the Nays are from the Bernie Sanders CPC camp.
Almost all the Dems voted Nay and Chafee (who might as well be a Dem). Got a few of them Dems to cross the aisle though.
Jack I always love to see who voted what on things. It would be great if ( dreaming here of course)…..if our newspapers would publish the votes for things in a special section.
razOr, your right about Chafee he should really come out of the closet the rest of the way as being a Dem.
I am glad that enough Senators saw the reality of this bill to pass it. Or some of them saw the reality of their constituents. Salazar of Colorado was one of the Dems voting in favor. Guess those (wild)Bronco fans flooded his office with calls and emails!
