Annan Denies Claim That He Told Iran to Ignore Uranium Deadline
NEW YORK — U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday was trying to settle a flap over a potentially damaging claim made earlier in the day by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Ahmadinejad said Annan had told him Iran could ignore a Security Council resolution requiring the country to cease enriching uranium by Aug. 31 or face economic sanctions. The Security Council sought the resolution in the face of rising fears over Iran’s possible moves toward building nuclear weapons: Uranium enrichment is one of the key factors in that process.
But in its most recent report, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, found that Iran had continued enriching uranium through the deadline, bypassing Security Council Resolution 1696.
“We didn’t understand and couldn’t understand why a resolution was passed in the midst of an examination of a package,” Ahmadinejad said. “We think [the Security Council] was probably under pressure by some powers who constantly want to place pressure on countries. The secretary-general told me to disregard what has happened for the time being, resort to diplomacy.”
A spokesman for Annan said that was not the case, though, and Annan “did not tell Iran to disregard” the resolution.
If Ahmadinejad’s claim holds true, it would run afoul of the U.N. charter, which makes clear that the secretary-general reports to the Security Council. And according to Annan’s Web site, his duties include upholding the “values and moral authority of the United Nations.”
Annan visited Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Sept. 3. FOX News reported that the visit was being planned Aug. 18, meaning that officials from both offices were in contact some 12 days before the deadline to cease uranium enrichment was set to expire.
Wild Thing’s comment……
Ahmadinejad lied? Annan lied? Which liar are we supposed to believe?
hmmmmmm
Well just this, Kofi is clearly not taking a hard line stance against Iran. Just wondering here.
While perusing the channels on tv the other day, I came across what I thought was coverage of the UN general assembly. Then, I clicked further and came across something that was very similar. So I waited, clicking back and forth until commercial break to see which one was the real UN. As it turned out, the ‘other’ show was Jerry Springer. Hard to tell the difference…. I would believe either of my ex wives before I believed either of these clowns. “Did not-did too-not-too- not-too.!!!! Jeeeeesh….
We need to give them both a nice cup of STFU.
Billy
You know, I don’t believe one bit in evolution but that Ahmadinejad does look like a monkey.
Psssst,Pssst Hey man! youzz want some
peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeacheeeeeeessssss???
Which liar are we supposed to believe?
Moonbat answer: At least neither of them lied us into war.
Normal person’s answer: Why should I trust either of them?
Billy LMAO that is a good one.
Bob he sure does!! hahaha
Gary, I love your Moonbat answer.Hahaha
Action speaks louder than words, no UN acion is a clear signal to develop the nuclear capabilities of Iran. That precedent was set in Iraq, this is just a repeat at our expense. Only two members on the UN security council wan’t them to stop and one of them is under intense pressure by the Euroweenies at home, the rest are sided with Iran’s ideals.
I think a logician would look at it this way.
It’s plausible that Annan would tell Ahmadinejad this, chiefly because he’s a complicit, incompetent moron who will always take the easy way. It makes sense. Ahmadickwad has nothing to gain by lying about it.
Rhod,
Time, that is what Ahmadickwad has to gain. Lie, and while the world is sidetracked by who said what to who,you avoid the main issue which is when the hell are you going to comply. In addition, lie, make someone else the bad guy, “well gee world, I’d have gone along with this but this guy said, hey doanwooryabowtit”. It seems to be the common denominator in all of our dealings with muslim officials in the mid east. I remember Tariq Aziz peering through his coke bottle glasses directly into the camera stating Kuwait?,,,We have not invaded Kuwait. Weapons inspectors in Iraq faced the same crap, waiting at the front door of facilities while trucks were being loaded out the back. No, No, No, those are delivery trucks, bringing milk for our poor mal nourished children.! Ahmadinejad lying about this is not beyond the realm of possibility. He also said he likes Jews this week. Huh??? He is one big shell game. Deception, misdirection, and slight of hand are the tools he will use to try to develop a bomb. Where other Muslim leaders have failed, Ahmadinejad is refining their tactics. He has much to gain by lying, and everything to lose.
Billy
I’m with BobF, he does look like…. wait a minuite, Wasn’t he known as “bubbles”? Michael Jacksons chimp sidekick?
ah, who to believe? Mahmoud or Kofi, their both so honest and sincere….NOT.
Bob, I don’t disagree. But this Security Council crap has never made sense to me. I don’t think that Dickwad takes the Security Council seriously in the first place. There won’t be any sanctions, he knows that. Dickwad’s bleat there wasn’t aimed at The West or the Western Left either, but at his other, silent, enemies. The Arabs, and their lackies in the UN.
None of the Arab States gave a damn about Israeli nukes (they have them), because they’ve known for a generation that Israel is not a threat. But this is different. Iran’s Persian resurgence is a threat to the region, and they know it. Saudi Arabia and Egypt, particularly, now have no choice but to acquire nukes, probably by buying them outright, and probably by buying them from us.
Dickwad might have deployed Annan’s “reputation”, such as it is, as a means to reassure other listeners that even Kofi was convinced of Iran’s peaceful intentions. Those other listeners are not Americans. They’re Muslims of another variety.
Dickwad, so far, and the stinky Mullahs who pluck his little banjo in the hot tub, aren’t at all concerned about The West in this issue. All they have to do is shut up and do it. Why all the chatter? The Europeans are fluttering pantywaists and the UN is squat useless. Who are they trying to bully and persuade? Their neighbors. And I think they’re also very, very afraid of Iraq.
Liar, liar. Can we set them both on fire?
No wonder all these 3rd rate tinhorns hate us, imagine if nobody stood in their way.
The last two leaders at the UN have been as corupt as a Democrat party in Chicago. I do not think the UN can be reformed I think we need to pull out and start another organization that has the interest of the free world at heart.
Jack you are right, action sure does speak louder then words. I get so angry at the UN, so disgusted.
Rhod if I had to pick between the two of them just on this subject of who is the liar. For me I would pick Annan being the liar.
Isn’t it something when people lie so much that when it comes down to the wire it is hard to tell who just might be telling the truth. amazing.
Sierrahome good point,I hope we keep on standing in their way. Thahks
