20 years ago, Michael Conner Humphrey — the child star who played a young Forrest Gump in leg braces — was invited to the Oscars, but he and his family couldn’t afford tickets. “The tickets were going to cost a lot of money, so we decided to just watch it on TV like everyone else.” The film went on to win six Academy Awards including Best Actor for Tom Hanks and Best Director for Robert Zemeckis. Eight-year-old Michael watched the show at home on TV.

What is Michael doing now? He decided to shunned Hollywood and instead chose a career in the military — much like his character in the hit movie.

Five senior Taliban leaders released last year from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl could move freely around the world next week as their one-year travel ban expires.

The five detainees were sent to Qatar where government officials agreed to monitor their activities and prevent them from traveling out of the country under the terms of the May 2014 exchange. Bergdahl, who had been held captive by the Taliban for nearly five years after walking away from his Army post in Afghanistan, was released to the U.S. military.

He recently was charged with desertion.

U.S. officials have discussed with the Qataris the possibility of extending the travel ban after it expires on June 1. But so far, the White House has not publicly announced any new agreement with Qatar, meaning the five could leave the tiny nation on the Arabian Peninsula at the end of the month.


At least one of the five allegedly contacted militants during the past year while in Qatar. No details have been disclosed about that contact, but the White House confirmed that one was put under enhanced surveillance. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said last week: "I know that at least one has had communication with the Taliban."


One or more of the detainees had some members of the al-Qaida-affiliated Haqqani militant group travel to Qatar to meet with them earlier in the year, according to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. That was an indication that the group was reaching out to communicate with the so-called Taliban Five, said Graham, who predicts all five will rejoin the fight.


Members of Congress have repeatedly expressed concern about what will happen after the travel ban expires. They have asked the Obama administration to try to persuade Qatar to extend the monitoring.

Obama's FCC Chairman Plans To Expand “Obama Phone” Program to Internet Subsidized Broadband

(CNSNews.com) – Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler announced on Thursday that he intends to expand Lifeline, popularly known as the “Obama Phone” program, to the Internet.

“I am circulating new proposals to “reboot” Lifeline for the Internet age,” Wheeler wrote in a blog post on the FCC’s Website. He said the reboot would include “establishing minimum standards of service for voice and broadband,” in addition to subsidies for low-income consumers.

Lifeline is a government benefit program that provides a monthly subsidy of $9.95 on telephone service for those at or below 135 percent of the poverty line so they can connect to the nation’s communications networks, find jobs, access health care services, connect with family and their children’s schools, and call for help in an emergency.

The money comes out of the Universal Service Fund (USF), which is funded through fees paid by consumers on telephone service. The fee is generally itemized on customers’ monthly telephone bills and is currently assessed at a rate of 16.1 percent of the bill.

The size of the Lifeline program has doubled since 2008, increasing from $819 million to $1.6 billion in 2014. It reached a high of $2.19 billion in 2012 amid allegations of fraud and abuse.

The USF, meanwhile, has increased from $7.2 billion in 2008 to $10.34 billion in 2014, with Chairman Wheeler’s staff estimating a level of $12.1 billion in 2016. However, that estimate does not account for prospective Internet subsidies.

In his post, Wheeler said, “30 percent of Americans still haven’t adopted broadband at home…. While more than 95 percent of households with incomes over $150,000 have broadband, only 48 percent of those making less than $25,000 have service at home.”

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby charged six local police officers with murder and manslaughter in the death of serial criminal Freddie Gray on May 1.


Since the police were charged arrests in Baltimore are down by 50%.

The Baltimore Police Chief released a statement today saying the police are more afraid of going to jail in the city under the current Democratic leadership than they are of taking a bullet.

The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police released a statement today. President Lieutenant Gene Ryan says the officers are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs that they are of getting shot.

The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police said on Thursday that Baltimore’s recent rise in crime is linked to fear among police officers that they will be arrested for doing their jobs.

This fear, the union said, comes as a result of the arrests of six officers for the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was wrongly arrested and died of injuries sustained during his arrest. The State Attorney’s Office filed charges against six officers in Gray’s death.

“The criminals are taking advantage of the situation in Baltimore since the unrest. Criminals feel empowered now. There is no respect. Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty,” union president Lieutenant Gene Ryan said in a statement.

Recently released emails detail then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s interest in arming Libyan opposition groups using private security contractors before the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011 – though at the time, the opposition was not formally recognized by the U.S. or United Nations, which prohibited arming without following strict guidelines and oversight.

The issue remains so sensitive that the emails recently released by the State Department redacted a key line on the matter. But the unredacted version of the same email, released to the congressional Benghazi Select Committee and first posted by The New York Times last Thursday, showed Clinton appearing to endorse the idea of using private contractors to her then-deputy chief of staff, Jake Sullivan.

“FYI. The idea of using private security experts to arm the opposition should be considered,” Clinton wrote to Sullivan on April 8, 2011, attaching an intelligence report from Hillary’s adviser Sidney Blumenthal. The opposition was known as the Transitional National Council, or TNC.

Another email released by the State Department shows that five days earlier, on April 3, 2011, Bill Clinton said he would not rule out arming the Libyan opposition. The story was circulated by Cheryl Mills, Hillary Clinton’s principal personal adviser at the State Department, to “H.” While it’s not clear who “H” is, based on the message traffic it is likely Hillary Clinton or possibly adviser Huma Abedin.

Later that same year, a Sept. 10, 2011 email with a subject line “Rogers” said, “Apparently wants to see you to talk Libya/weapons.”

At the time, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee was Mike Rogers, who abruptly announced he would not seek re-election in the spring of 2014. Rogers did not immediately respond to questions seeking comment. Fox News also filed its own Freedom of Information Act request for the documents in October 2012.

The EPA has released its Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule critics say would allow the agency to regulate waterways previously not under federal jurisdiction, including puddles, ditches and isolated wetlands.

Republicans, farmers and industrial groups have called the rule an EPA “power grab” because it extends the agency’s powers to new heights. Environmentalists and the Obama administration, however, argue the WOTUS rule is necessary for protecting water quality.

No matter how you spin it, the EPA’s WOTUS rule does expand the agency’s authority, and creates new avenues for environmental groups to sue projects they want to stop from moving forward.


“The administration’s decree to unilaterally expand federal authority is a raw and tyrannical power grab that will crush jobs,” House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement.

“Despite their assurances, it appears that EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have failed to keep their promises to Congress and the American people,” echoed Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe. “In fact, instead of fixing the overreach in the proposed rule, remarkably, EPA has made it even broader.”

Farmers and industry groups worry the new WOTUS rule will expand EPA reach over isolated wetlands, ponds and ditches that have a “significant nexus” to navigable waters — a vague standard employed by the EPA to regulate bodies of water.

A federal judge issued an order Wednesday requiring the State Department to make public batches of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s emails every 30 days starting next month.

U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras also set particular targets for the agency to meet each month as it wades through the roughly 30,000 emails totaling about 55,000 pages. (The percentages set for each disclosure can be viewed in the judge’s written order, posted here.)

The monthly disclosure essentially splits the difference between the State Department’s most recent proposal of releases every 60 days and lawyers for Vice News reporter Jason Leopold, who proposed releases every two weeks.

The State Department initially proposed releasing the vast majority of the emails in a single batch by next January, but Contreras rejected that suggestion, citing the public interest in the materials.

Clinton, now a Democratic candidate for president, has said she wants the emails released by State as quickly as possible.

Vice News sought the emails and other records from Clinton’s office last year under the Freedom of Information Act and filed suit earlier this year when the media outlet received no substantive response.

Clinton returned the 55,000 pages of emails to her former agency in December after an October request to four former secretaries asking for any official records in their possession. The former secretary, who used a private account for all her emails during her four years as America’s top diplomat, also has said she had erased a roughly equivalent number of emails her lawyers determined to be personal or private.

A federal appeals court upheld an injunction against President Obama’s new deportation in a ruling Tuesday that marks the second major legal setback for an administration that had insisted its actions were legal.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled in favor of Texas, which had sued to stop the amnesty, on all key points, finding that Mr. Obama’s amnesty likely broke the law governing how big policies are to be written.

“The public interest favors maintenance of the injunction,” the judges wrote in the majority opinion.

“We live in a nation governed by a system of checks and balances, and the president’s attempt to bypass the will of the American people was successfully checked again today,” said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who, as his state’s attorney general last year, began the lawsuit challenging the new amnesty.

Twenty-five states joined Texas in suing to halt the amnesty, arguing they would bear new costs in having to issue driver’s licenses to the illegal immigrants and provide health care and other services to them. The states said the president’s actions were unconstitutional or, at the very least, illegal.

First a district court, and now a federal appeals court, have sided with Texas, serving as twin legal rebukes to Mr. Obama and his defenders, who had insisted the steps he took were consistent with the law and with previous presidents’ actions.

The rulings do not affect Mr. Obama’s 2012 amnesty for so-called Dreamers, which has already granted tentative legal status to more than 600,000 illegal immigrants, and it also doesn’t take away Mr. Obama’s ability to decline to deport illegal immigrants. That means none of the more than 4 million people in question are likely to be kicked out of the country.

But the judges have ruled that Mr. Obama can’t go further and grant many of those people an affirmative status carrying all sorts of benefits, including driver’s licenses, tax credits and preferential work status under the terms of Obamacare.

Days of flash flooding, tornadoes and historic rainfall across central Texas and Oklahoma swept away hundreds of homes and left at least five people dead and ... The other eight were missing, along with four others from the area, apparently lost in the torrent that capped weeks of rain and violent weather across Texas and Oklahoma. The weekend’s weather left three people known dead in the two states, and more heavy rain and tornadoes pummeled Texas on Monday.

The governor of Texas on Monday declared states of disaster in 24 counties, citing the severe weather and flash flooding that have killed at least two people.

The state has been pounded by tornadoes, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding that forced evacuations and rooftop rescues and left thousands of residents without electrical power.

In declaring the states of disaster in 24 counties, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said: “The State of Texas has taken brisk action in dispatching all available resources to aid those affected by this severe weather system.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all the communities that are suffering as a result of this weather disaster, and I am grateful for the first responders who have worked tirelessly to provide shelter, care and resources to all impacted areas,” he said.

Widespread severe thunderstorms were forecast for Monday in north-central and northeast Texas and southern Oklahoma, likely bringing destructive winds, tornadoes and hail, the National Weather Service said.

The Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm and flash-flood warnings as well as tornado watches throughout the region.

The most intense storms threatening Texas and Oklahoma were likely to strike in the late afternoon and early evening, according to Accuweather.com meteorologist Brian Lada.

“Damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning strikes can occur,” he said.

Parts of the area have received more than a foot and a half of rain since May 1, which is six times more than the area typically receives in all of May, Accuweather said.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Gen. Mark Welsh, the head of the U.S. Air Force, warns that severe defense budget cuts will impact U.S. air superiority against enemies that the nation may not be thinking about right now.

“China and Russia are two good examples of countries who will be fielding capability in the next three to five years; if they stay on track, that is better than what we currently have in many areas,” Welsh said during a three-day visit to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
“Fighter aircraft in the next three to five years that have more capability than what we currently have sitting on the ramp. The F-35 will stay a generation ahead of them. F-22 will, too. Everything else we have will not stay ahead. The gap has closed.”

Until the first night of the air war against ISIS in Syria last October, the F-22 had never been used in combat. It's stealth, flies nearly twice the speed of sound and Fox News has since learned the F-22 has led nearly every air combat mission over Syria since.

I think we saw a lot of what the F-22 can do, but you certainly didn't see all it can do,” Welsh said.

Welsh, who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1976, is concerned about the future.

“By 8 to 10 years from now, we could be facing as many as 50 countries who use Russian and Chinese top-end fighters today,” Welsh said. When asked how much of Russia and China’s innovations in fighter jet technology is based on stolen U.S. technology, Welsh just smiled.


"When you look at pictures you go, ‘man -- that looks familiar,’" Welsh said during the interview with Fox.


And budget cuts have trimmed more than planes.

“We are 200,000 people fewer in the active component. That's 40 percent less than we were during the first Gulf War. It's a dramatically different Air Force," Welsh explained.

As citizens that are paying attention we are all very aware of what these cut backs will cost our country and our troops in what they need to fight the enemy. Too bad Obama and his ilk do not want us to be the most powerful country in the world, he wants us to be weak like he is.

Memorial Day and Every Day We Remember Them








Here's to all the fallen soldiers in wars past and present.


“God of our fathers, who by land and sea have ever led us to victory, please continue your inspiring guidance in this the greatest of all conflicts. Strengthen my soul so that the weakening instinct of self-preservation, which besets all of us in battle, shall not blind me of my duty to my own manhood, to the glory of my calling, and to my responsibility to my fellow soldiers. Grant to our armed forces that disciplined valor and mutual confidence which insures success in war. Let me not mourn for the men who have died fighting, but rather let me be glad that such heroes have lived. If it be my lot to die, let me do so with courage and honor in a manner which will bring the greatest harm to the enemy, and please, oh Lord, protect and guide those I shall leave behind. Give us the victory, Lord. " -General George Patton

Those are the words on a tombstone, far across the Pacific, of someone who gave up his life for our future.

Were those words uttered so that those of us who are left could just enjoy our lives without "getting involved", or were they written to remind us that the work of freedom and liberty is never done?

Were those words written ,to suggest to us that it is not our job nor our responsibility to keep alive what they fought and died for, or were they written to remind us that we were given the opportunity of life so that we would continue to defend, and keep alive the memory of what they gave their last full measure for?

Let us here today, tonight, tomorrow, next month and next year - remember these gallant defenders of our freedom.

Most were not heroes as defined by the most hallowed Medal of Honor nor even as defined by the silver or bronze star.

They were ALL Heroes

Yes they were heroes, because without hesitation they fought for our country when they were asked to defend her.

They left their families, friends and good times behind and went to fight for our freedom without hesitation.

Some -- never even fired their weapons because they were killed before they ever reached the beach.

But they were heroes because they were there, ready to fight for America - for family, flag and country.

Most were scared to death as they prepared to meet the enemy. Their stomachs were turned upside down and they prayed to God and wished they were with their moms, dads and sweethearts rather than being where they were.

But they were where they were, fighting an enemy that was threatening their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They were fighting an enemy because they believed in America, they loved Her flag and they wanted to protect American's right to worship as they chose.

They were there, without hesitation, fighting for what they believed in and dying for what they believed in so you and I could live the way we chose in a free country. But they did not die so that we would stop fighting for what they believed and died for.

They fought and died knowing that we, the living, would go on fighting for that same freedom, that same country, that same flag and for that same right to worship as we choose. Abraham Lincoln, at Gettysburg, said:

"It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion--that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain--that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth."

It is for us the living to go on defending what they died for. It is for us the living not to allow history to forget what they gave up all their tomorrow's for.

If when we attacked Guadalcanal and landed at Salerno, we found that "they" were going to fight back, we didn't give up because they fought back. We continued to fight because we knew our cause was right!

When Americans rode in the landing craft before storming the beaches at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Sicily, Anzio, Normandy, Peleliu, Saipan, Iowa Jima, Okinawa, Inchon and many other places we had never heard of before and when they fought in North Africa, the Philippines, Italy, France, Bastonne, Germany, Korea and Vietnam -- most were scared to death; their stomachs were turned upside down and they wanted to be back home with their loved ones.

But that did not stop them from attacking America's enemies bravely and without hesitation. They fought, and many died, but they did not give up because someone shot back at them.

It is for us the living to continue to defend and keep known what they fought and died for -- what they gave up all of their tomorrow's for.

They did not die so that we could become complacent; nor did they die so that when we, the living, reached a single obstacle --- we should quit

They died knowing that we would go on defending their actions, defending history and defending what they gave up all their tomorrow's for.

If WE don't remember ---if WE don't defend what they fought and died for and what we fought for -- who will remember? Who will care?

How many of them and you who fought for our flag and our country and remember the feeling as Old Glory" was being raised over a piece of land we fought for ---- and many died for?

How many remember seeing or hearing about our valiant warriors, who were fighting on Iowa Jima, as they stood and cheered when they saw the flag being raised over Mt. Suribachi.

We take this time on Memorial Day to salute our Fallen Heroes who through the history of our country have fought and died for all of us. THANK YOU!!! ---- Wild Thing

92-year-old Air Transport Auxiliary veteran Joy Lofthouse returns to the skies in a Spitfire 70 years on from the end of World War 2.

Seven decades after her last flight in the iconic plane, Joy described the experience as “lovely: it was perfect”, making her feel “quite young.” The ATA made an enormous contribution to the war effort by taking over from service pilots the task of ferrying Royal Air Force and Royal Navy warplanes between factories, maintenance units and front-line squadrons.

Taps is 24 notes that can make the toughest soldier cry

It’s a musical recognition of a life ended, a goodbye that hangs in the air as friends and family wipe their tears, look up and know they must live the rest of their lives without someone.

Since 2001, retired Army Reserve Lt. Col. Philip Kowzan, has played taps at military honor funerals in the Spokane area. His debut came unexpectedly at longtime friend Ivan Brayman’s funeral.

“They had a recorder there and I said, ‘No, you’re not using that, not at my friend Ivan’s funeral,’?” Kowzan said.

A lifelong trumpet player, he got his trumpet out of the car, took a deep breath and played for his friend one last time.

“I wasn’t in uniform or anything,” Kowzan said. “I’m not even sure I did it right.”

That was the only time he played taps in 2001.

But since then, he’s played at 1,259 funerals, sometimes playing at three services in the morning and another three in the afternoon.

“I did seven one day,” Kowzan said. “That’s a lot.”

Every funeral Kowzan has participated in is meticulously recorded in a little black notebook, its cover worn from being carried in his pocket.

When he ran out of notebook pages, he switched to a small three-ring binder.

He tries to get the funeral program and the obituary from each service, and he’s working on creating a leather-bound scrapbook that will be given to the Washington State Veterans Cemetery.

“It’s become my mission,” Kowzan said, flipping through the pages of his notebook, recognizing many of the names.

At 77, Kowzan is long retired, first from the Army and then from a job with a whirlpool spa company.

He plays in several bands with his wife, Carol Kowzan, and has just picked up viola, so he wouldn’t mind slowing down his bugling career. It’s just that he knows of only three other bugle players.


“Once in a while a new person shows up,” Kowzan said. “But we desperately need younger people.”

Kowzan doesn’t charge anything, though he doesn’t turn down a donation to cover gas and a sandwich for lunch.

His spotless, well-fitting uniform cost him $500.

The Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake pays him a $25 stipend - for a whole day.

“It’s 23 miles out there, so if I have funerals in the morning and the afternoon, then I don’t go home,” Kowzan said, smiling.

Kowzan is not complaining, he’s just truly worried that battery-operated, digital bugles with built-in MP3 players will take over, leaving a sterile monotone presentation of a very emotional piece of music.

“Sometimes the batteries die in the middle of everything,” Kowzan said. “It will never be the same as having a real live person play.”

I will be spending this Memorial Day weekend in Rosenberg, Texas with my daughter Aubrey at the 6th Annual US Navy SEAL Danny Dietz Memorial Team Roping and BBQ Cook Off. This is the 10 year anniversary of Operation Red Wings made famous by the book and film, “Lone Survivor.”

So this will be my only post for this weekend.

The solemn act of honoring those who have fallen in battle is a custom that seems to have faded in importance to our nation over time.

Nowadays, many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At cemeteries across the country, the graves of the fallen are sadly ignored, and worse, neglected.

While there are towns and cities still planning Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some think the day is for honoring anyone who has died, not just those fallen in service to our country.

Perhaps they do not know how deeply our nation once appreciated those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the principles we hold most dear. Perhaps those very principles of individual sovereignty, freedom and liberty are no longer so important.

It was not always so.

In 1868, on May 5th, Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” was officially proclaimed by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11.

General Logan asked that we cherish “tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes. Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders.”

But times change. In the 1960’s our warriors were not welcomed back from battle with parades and cheers, and the fallen were not honored as they had been in the past.

Perhaps reflecting those times, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed in 1968 as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends – time for fun and recreation, rather than remembrance and reflection.
Thus, from 1971 onwards, the Memorial Day holiday was officially observed on the last Monday in May and became the unofficial start of the summer, with barbecues, blockbuster movie openings and mattress sales.

No less than the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) was later moved to say “Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public’s nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.”

It was around that time as well that defense spending began a steep decline, and in 1976, for the first time, entitlement spending exceeded defense spending. It is a trend that has rapidly accelerated, with spending on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid more than double that of national defense, a core constitutional function of government.

Nonetheless, the United States of America still possesses the greatest military force the world has ever known. Our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsman volunteer to protect and defend this country and all its citizens, and do so with honor, integrity and excellence. Our nation continually asks them to do more and more, with less and less.

We must never forget why we have, and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have “guardians at the gate.”

Those who serve today deserve our gratitude, those who are returning from the battlefield deserve our open arms, and those who will never return deserve our thoughts, tributes and remembrance.

In 2000, President Clinton passed a resolution asking all Americans to observe a “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3:00 p.m. on each Memorial Day “to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.” I know what I will be doing at 3:00 p.m. this Memorial Day. I hope I will not be alone.

For as General Logan proclaimed, “Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.”

We can have debates about going to war. But we should never look in hindsight and denigrate the heroic exertions of those who represent that which is the best amongst us all. So take the time this Memorial Day to explain to your children and grandchildren that this day is not about BBQ, swimming pools opening, the start of summer, or sales.

This day is about those who have always known that there is no sale price for freedom. It is about those who were more than willing to discount their own lives for the ultimate benefit to others.

They were and shall always be Steadfast and Loyal.

Sen. Jeff Sessions just released the following statement announcing a "no" vote on final Senate passage of the fast-track bill:

“Under fast-track, Congress transfers its most basic legislative powers to the Executive for six years. Any yet-unseen global pacts, no matter how sweeping, are guaranteed a “fast-track” to congressional adoption. No amendments. No ability to strike any offending provision. And no chance to apply either the 60- or 67-vote thresholds used for important legislation and treaties.

I asked the President how his fast-tracked proposals would impact jobs, wages, and trade deficits. He would not answer. The bill’s promoters also refused to answer when asked whether their proposal would reduce net manufacturing jobs in the United States. That is because they know it will. Like the South Korean trade deal—which doubled our trade deficit after promises of a trade renaissance—this proposal will widen further our trade deficits and eliminate jobs.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership opens our markets to foreign imports, but allows foreign countries to continue closing their market to ours.

Our country has not been engaged in reciprocal free trade but, as the Chairman Emeritus of Nucor Steel explained, “the enablement of foreign mercantilism” and “unilateral trade disarmament.” We have allowed state-dominated and mercantilist trading partners to maintain their varied and elaborate non-tariff barriers, exporting their unemployment to our shores.

Stubbornly, our political elites have treated trade as a matter of religion. To them, there is no such thing as a bad deal. They know American workers lose jobs when we allow trading partners to cheat. But they insist it is all for the greater good. This is why the American worker keeps ending up on the losing end.

Fast-track will also lock into passage a new global governance authority known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership Commission. Chartered with a “Living Agreement,” this new transnational commission will be able to amend the agreement after its adoption. Among other things, this could empower the President to expand the admission of foreign workers without congressional approval. We are creating another unelectable, unaccountable, unanswerable bureaucracy that can tie down and frustrate American sovereignty.

Congress is forgetting its duty: to improve jobs and wages for Americans.”

TAMPA, Florida — Fighting simmering frustration in their ranks over ISIS advances in Iraq and Syria, top U.S. special operations commanders say they are building forces for a multi-generational fight—not a war that will be won in the next few years.

“We recognize this is a longterm prospect,” said Gen. Joseph Votel, the overall leader of U.S. Special Operations Command, in remarks to The Daily Beast during a special operations forum in Tampa. “We’re patient.”


“We talk about it being a 15-year struggle,” added Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, who heads the Air Force Special Operations Command, said describing the fight.

But many special operations officers and troops both in Tampa and Washington don’t want to wait that long to take the fight to ISIS. They were eager to talk about their aggravation over fighting by remote in Iraq and Syria: having to advise Iraqis, Kurdish Peshmerga, and rebel Syrian fighters from afar instead of joining them in battle.

“We are doing everything through cellphones… It’s hard to do much when you can’t go outside the wire,” said one special operator, using the military jargon for the perimeter of a base.


They blame the hands-off approach on an Obama administration unwilling to risk even small numbers of American lives in battle, burned by the fallout of the loss of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, and intent on preserving the legacy of President Barack Obama’s troop drawdowns in Iraq and Afghanistan.


“You can’t say ‘We’re with you every step of the way, except when you are going on combat operations,’” said a former senior special operations official briefed on the ISIS campaign.

He and many other officers, current and former, at the conference believe both Mosul and Ramadi could have withstood the assault of the so-called Islamic State, also known as ISIS, if a small number of U.S. military advisers had been working with Iraqi forces at the front lines.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the debates over war strategy.

“They know as long as there are Americans with them, that if they get in trouble, there is intelligence,” and medical evacuation, the former senior official said. “They don’t have faith in their own chain of command to do it, so rather than being captured and slaughtered by ISIS, they’ll break and run.”

In Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery, the emotion of the day caught up with Staff Sgt. Oliver Moore.

He had just placed silver airborne wings on the grave of his best friend, Staff Sgt. Kevin Michael Witte, in memory of the times they had gone skydiving together. Witte, 27, died in an improvised explosive device attack in Baghdad in 2006.

“With all the BS we put up with, we get one day a year where it puts everything in perspective. This is our generation,” Moore said, gesturing to the section where many of the casualties of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been laid to rest.

Moore and more than 1,000 other servicemembers were taking part in Thursday’s pre-Memorial Day Flags-In ceremony, conducted at Arlington every year since 1948 by the Old Guard. American flags — more than 228,000 of them — lined every headstone, their red, white and blue contrasting with the white marble.

“This section (60) is tough,” said Moore, who also visited the grave of Sgt. 1st Class James Scott Ochsner, killed in Afghanistan in 2005.

“It’s too crowded on Memorial Day,” Moore added. “It’s just soldiers here today.”

In a different part of Section 60, at the grave of Sgt. 1st Class James D. Connell Jr., another soldier saluted sharply: His son, Spc. Nicholas Connell, who placed the American flag at the base of the headstone.

“I know in my heart, as much as it means to me, the honor and sacrifice that everybody in here has given to us,” Connell said. “If people could see us giving that same respect, they would want to do the same.”

James Connell was killed in 2007 in Iraq; Pfc. Daniel W. Courneya and Pfc. Christopher E. Murphy died in the same attack.

“My dad was an all-American, he was 100 percent a patriot," Connell said. "For me, he was more of a best friend. He was my football, basketball, baseball coach. We traveled so much as an Army brat, moved from place to place; that was my one buddy to go to talk to when something is bothering you.

"He was definitely a family man. I know he loved his family more than anything.”

His father, Connell said, is the reason he enlisted.

“Memorial Day is for us to come out here and honor the people who fought and have fallen for our country," Connell said. "Give them the respect they deserve, and the loyalty they deserve.”

Old Guard soldiers also placed flags at the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery in Washington.

Later this week, you’ll hear the story of Jack Holder, one of the most famous living WWII airmen, who fought his way across both Pacific and European theaters of war. A Texas native and a good friend of mine, Jack confided in me that he was a big fan of Gov. Rick Perry. The Governor had been instrumental in theCHIVE’s highly-publicized move from California to Texas, during which time the Governor and I connected – we’re both WWII enthusiasts to an extent far beyond a hobby.

So I called the Governor and asked if he’d take time out of his busy schedule to visit with this hero? Governor Perry, an Air Force Captain himself, simply responded, “When and Where?” What followed was one of the most fascinating and powerful discussions we’ve ever had on theCHIVE, all of which was recorded on our Podcast. It’s available for download right here.

As the Governor was leaving our office having deftly dodged all my, “On a scale of 1 to 10, are you running for President?” I asked him about his upcoming travel plans and the Governor lit up. Gov. Perry told me he was headed to Iowa on June 6th for a 30 mile motorcycle ride from Perry, Iowa, to Boone to raise money for the Puppy Jake Foundation, an organization that trains and places service dogs with wounded veterans. I asked him which motorcycle he was riding?

“I’m trying to figure that out right now, actually.”

“Governor, I think I know a guy in Iowa who could help you out in that department.”

“That’s really not necessary, John.”

“Have you ever heard of a man named Taylor Morris…”


Navy EOD tech Taylor Morris was leading a team of Army Special forces to a classified location when Taylor stepped on an IED. It exploded underneath him and blew off all four of his limbs,

“As I somersaulted through the air, I watched my arms and legs fly off.”

Taylor landed back in the blast crater. This is where the story of Taylor’s bravery goes next-level.

After the explosion, Taylor didn’t lose consciousness; he didn’t go into shock. His thoughts immediately crystalized. Even though Taylor was bleeding to death, he called to the oncoming medics NOT to come get him, putting their safety in front of his own life.

“There was no visual on the mine and no sound ID on my mine detector. That told me the mine was old. If there were other mines out there, the medics wouldn’t see them or detect them unless it was cleared properly. I knew I had arterial bleeding from all 4 limbs and I was bleeding out fast. I told my buddies to stop, I didn’t need anybody stepping on another one.”

The area around Taylor was finally cleared by the second EOD and the medic finally administered combat casualty care. Taylor remained conscious through the ordeal. Somehow he survived…

Three days after the explosion, Taylor landed back in the States and was transported to Walter Reed hospital in Washington D.C. to begin the long and painful rehab process. Upon his arrival, Taylor became only the 5th person at Walter Reed to ever survive a four limb amputation.

His physical progression defied everybody’s expectations. Taylor was known to refuse to leave rehab – he pushed himself to his physical limits, despite the pain. Only a month after the explosion the stitches in his arms were removed and he was fitted for prosthetics.

Around that same time I heard of the man named Taylor Morris. I received a dozen personal emails from many of his brothers describing his heroism on the battlefield, how difficult his road to recovery would be, and about his girlfriend Danielle, who was the only person they knew who was just as strong as Taylor. She never left his side at Walter Reid.

With his medical bills paid, theCHIVE quickly launched a campaign to build Taylor his dream home when he finally returned to Iowa. The campaign shattered GoFundMe records, raising $250,000 in 24 hours.


After 2 years of rehab, Taylor returned home to Iowa a hero.


After I told the Governor about Taylor Morris, he explained he’d be out in Iowa near Taylor’s home in Cedar Falls on the 19th and would love to visit Taylor if it was okay with him?

I called Taylor and asked if he still had that bike and was “putting oil in it n’ stuff.” I explained to him the Governor had a big charity ride for veterans in June.

“Of course. Can he ride? It’s a fast bike, John.”

“I’m pretty sure he can, I dunno.”


Governor Perry arrives on the farm and greets Taylor and his fiance, Danielle.

Sheriff David Clarke went off on the NAACP, after they scolded Baltimore police for defending themselves against an onslaught of attacks from local politicians.

This isn’t North Korea. And as for the NAACP. They have descended into irrelevancy. No one pays any attention to them anymore. That once proud organization that had a mission of defending the civil rights of all people, have capitulated and become the voter registration and get out the vote drive for the Democratic National Committee. So, it’s pretty obvious where they’re coming from… Since 1954 was the last time they’ve had any impact on social policy.


Sheriff Clark set his sights on the NAACP and while admitting that they were a once great organization, he claimed that they had descended into irrelevancy by becoming a vote-gathering apparatus for the Democratic party.

ISIS forces pushed east Monday from their fresh victory in Ramadi as the Iraqi government rushed reinforcements to shore up defensive lines meant to stop the terror group's advance.

Iraqi and U.S. officials promised eventual defeat for the self-proclaimed Islamic State, but the loss of the strategically and symbolically important city of Ramadi -- just 110 kilometers (70 miles) west of Iraq's heavily fortified capital of Baghdad -- had taken its toll.

"This is a huge setback to Iraqi forces and to the U.S. strategy to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIS," said retired U.S. Army Col. Peter Mansoor, a CNN military analyst.


On Monday, ISIS released photographs showing the release of inmates from a Ramadi prison.

Saudi Arabia will join the nuclear club by buying “off the shelf” atomic weapons from Pakistan, US officials told a London newspaper.

The Saudis — who financed much of Pakistan’s nuke program — are fearful of international efforts to keep its enemy Iran from acquiring a bomb, the Sunday Times of London reports. The Saudis think the deal, backed by President Obama, will actually accelerate Iran’s nuke push.

Saudi Arabia has talked for years about acquiring a bomb from the Pakistanis. “The House of Saud has now made the strategic decision to move forward,” a former US defense official said.

Obama is running out of time to fulfill his 2008 campaign pledge to close the Guantánamo Bay detention facility.

In an ironic twist, one of his last, best hopes for meeting the promise could rest with the man he defeated in his quest for the White House: Sen. John McCain.

While the Arizona Republican and 2008 GOP nominee is one of Obama’s harshest critics on foreign policy, he supports closing the controversial prison camp, and has proposed what could be Obama’s last shot at closing the prison.

McCain’s Armed Services committee on Thursday passed a defense policy bill that would extend current restrictions on transferring detainees out of Guantánamo and restore ones from 2013, but also require the administration to submit a plan to Congress on closing the military detention facility.

The plan would include a case-by-case determination on the disposition of each remaining detainee, and address the legal challenges of bringing them to the United States. The administration would also be asked to spell out what additional legal authorities that would be needed, and how the Pentagon would treat future combatants captured under the laws of war.

If Congress approves the plan, the administration could have an opening to close the facility and achieve the closure of the facility that Congress has fought since Obama took office.

Detainees would have limited rights under the bill if transferred to the U.S., to allay concerns they would have the same rights as American citizens.

McCain on Thursday hailed the proposal as a "bipartisan compromise" and a "workable solution" crafted with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).

However, McCain will face stiff opposition from fellow Republicans when the bill hits the Senate floor later this year.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) called the provision his "greatest disappointment" with the bill. Although he voted for the legislation in committee, he said he plans to fight the proposal on the floor.

“Members from many states have voiced concern with housing these terrorists in their states, especially now that ISIL has demonstrated the ability to call up sleeper cells to attack locations here in our country. I don’t want a target in Oklahoma,” he said in a statement.

McCain would need the support of all Democrats, plus six Republicans, in order to stop any attempts to strip the Guantánamo provision from the bill.

Even if the proposal passes the Senate, the plan could hit a brick wall in the House, which passed its defense policy bill on Friday. Their version of the defense bill would not only extend current restrictions on the prison camp for two years, but also add new ones.

The House bill would extend a ban on detainee transfers to the United States, as well as on modifying or constructing any facilities in the U.S. to house the detainees. Just before the bill passed on Friday morning, the House adopted an amendment to extend those restrictions for two years.

The House bill would also restore the more stringent certification requirements that Congress did away with in 2014 and 2015, and block transfers to any “combat zone” — which would limit the administration’s options.

Human rights groups decried the House’s move, saying it would make it nearly impossible to transfer 102 of the 122 remaining detainees from the facility.

“The Guantánamo provisions in the House bill are an attempt to block nearly all transfers out of Guantanamo and to ensure that the prison there remains open forever,” Matt Hawthorne, Policy Director at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, said Friday in a statement.

The Senate bill would have also have to win the support of the president — who has threatened to veto the final version of the defense bill if it contains many of the House’s proposals.

"I hope that if we complete ... this proposal about Guantánamo Bay — which I am convinced is a very workable proposal — the president would be then more inclined to sign the bill, since we all know that was the president's commitment when he came to office back in 2008," McCain said Thursday.


With so many hurdles, nervous Democrats are urging the president to transfer as many detainees out of Guantánamo as soon as possible — before Congress imposes tougher restrictions.

However, with 122 detainees remaining and 65 not yet cleared for release, it is likely the White House will need Congress’ help in lifting some restrictions.

McCain’s push on Guantánamo could carry political risk, as conservative groups are gearing up to support a primary challenge against him in 2016.

But McCain might be the only Republican with the clout to take action on president's call to shut the facility.

While serving as a Navy pilot in the Vietnam War in 1967, he was shot down, captured and tortured severely by the Vietcong. He spent five years in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” Vietnamese prison as a prisoner of war.

McCain has also condemned many of the “enhanced interrogation techniques” that some detainees at the prison were subjected to.

Earlier this year, it seemed that McCain had backtracked on his support for closing the facility, after he supported legislation from his Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) that would have added more restrictions on transfers.

But McCain said his position has remained the same: that if the president proposed a plan for closing Guantánamo, he would be willing to work with him.


"I've always been in favor of closing Guantánamo because of the image Guantanamo has in the world, whether it's deserved or not deserved," he said.

Rick Perry will announce whether he is running for president on June 4, according to a spokesman.


Anita Perry, wife of the former Texas governor, tweeted out an invitation to an event that morning in Dallas hosted by Perry’s political action committee, RickPAC. A spokesman said he will be “announcing his intentions” about 2016 at the event.

“Governor & Mrs. Perry have been discussing the future of our great country and how their family can play a role,” the invitation reads. “Join them in Dallas, TX on June 4th for a special announcement.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton reported Friday they earned more than $25 million combined in speaking fees since January 2014.

Clinton’s presidential campaign reported the income in a personal financial disclosure report filed with the Federal Election Commission. The report, required of every candidate for the White House, also shows Hillary Clinton earned more than $5 million from her 2014 memoirs, “Hard Choices.”

The details of the report were described by a Clinton campaign official who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss a report not yet publicly available from the FEC. The report was expected to be released publicly later Friday.

A high school in York County has spoken out after students protested Thursday morning when a senior said he was asked to remove an American flag from his pick-up truck.

Thursday morning, several students, parents, and veterans protested the incident, many setting up across from school grounds waving flags.

“When I hear that you can’t fly the American flag it makes my blood run red, and my blood is red,” said Vietnam Veteran Michael Douglas

Just before noon Thursday, officials at York Comprehensive High School said Peyton Robinson and other students could keep the U.S. flag on his vehicle as long as no driving hazard exists.

Parents who were part of the demonstration called the decision a win.

“We’re just glad we got this victory today, and it just proves if you stand up for your country, you stand up for what you believe in, things get changed,” said James Crump.

“Due to the outstanding display of patriotism through peaceful demonstration, it is apparent to us that many are not happy about this policy,” the school district posted on its website. “School officials have reviewed the standing policy regarding flags and have decided that an exception will be made for the American flag, as long as the size of the flag(s) does not create a driving hazard.”[…]

Initially, school district officials told students they couldn’t have any physical flags on their cars because of safety. Administrators said it was a pre-existing policy that was announced again Wednesday.

“Just proud to be an American,” the 18-year-old Robinson told WBTV Wednesday night. Robinson said a school administrator told him remove the American flag and the POW-MIA flag, which he has in the back of his truck.

“He said we’re having some issues. Some people were complaining about the flags in your truck, possibly offend them. He asked me to take it down,” Robinson said.

The high school senior, who has several family members who served in the armed forces, was upset because he didn’t see the problem.

"I'd understand if it was the Confederate flag or something that might offend somebody," Robinson said. "I wouldn't do that. But an American flag - that's our country's flag. I have every right to do it. I don't see a safety issue. I mean I understand it's a big flag - it's 4 by 6 - but nobody has ever complained about it being in their way or anything."

According to Robinson, a school administrator told him to remove the flags when he got home, and not come back to school with them.

But the 18-year-old said before the school day was over on Wednesday, a school official went to Robinson's parked truck, removed the bolts that secured the flags to the truck, took the flags down, and "laid my flags down in the middle of my truck when I wasn't even there."

Robinson was angry.

"I was pretty mad," he said. "I don't see how it's a problem. Nobody has ever complained about it before."

The senior took to social media and posted about the incident on his Facebook page. Fellow students vowed to stand with Robinson, flying flags on their cars when they arrived at school Thursday morning.

Despite being initially told he was not to come to school again with flags flying on his pick-up, Robinson says he plans to do what he's done for the past month - display his flags.

He called Thursday a victory, and added that he's glad others stood behind him, and more importantly that he can show his true colors.

“I'm really surprised all these people showed up and I'm really appreciative of all the support from everybody, I had no idea it would get this big,” Robinson said.

If this was meant to reassure the Gulf states, I’m sure their hair is still standing on end.” He then read from the statement, drawing attention to each “weasel word,” before adding, “I mean, I have never seen a statement with more caveats in it, which would give less confidence to any ally. And Obama, if you noticed was reading that. That wasn’t a bad ad lib, that wasn’t a Jeb answering the wrong question. Calling the Amtrak train derailment a “horrific incident,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said investment in upgrades to the rail system’s infrastructure remain important to the administration. And President Obama, he said, has long advocated for Amtrak investments that would “benefit the traveling public.”

But Earnest was quick to note in his press briefing Wednesday that congressional Republicans have blocked such investments in the past.

“Unfortunately we have seen a concerted effort by Republicans for partisan reasons to step in front of those kinds of advancements,” Earnest said, noting that the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and it’s unclear whether infrastructure problems were involved.


When asked if there was anything more the president could do to press for investment in infrastructure, Earnest said Congress has "the power of the purse, and so for significant investment in infrastructure, we're going to need to see congressional action."

An Amtrak engineer barreled into a sharp turn at 106 mph — double the speed limit — just seconds before a derailment that left seven dead and nearly every other passenger injured in Philadelphia, authorities said on Wednesday.

Engineer Brandon Bostian, of Forest Hills, Queens, was reportedly at the controls of the Penn Station-bound train.

The engineer slammed on the emergency brakes moments before Tuesday night’s disaster, but could only reduce the speed to 102 mph before all seven cars jumped the tracks, said Nation Transportation Safety Board spokesman Robert Sumwalt.

“The maximum authorized speed through this curve was 50 mph,” he said.


Bostian briefly spoke to police after the derailment, and told them he could not recall his speed — but the engineer then quickly got a lawyer and clammed up, ­according to CNN.

He refused to be interviewed by investigators Wednesday and left the police station with his attorney.


Investigators were attempting to get a search warrant for Bostian’s phone records in a bid to learn if he was distracted when the train derailed, CNN said.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said the engineer was out of control.

“There’s no way in the world that he should have been going that fast into the curve,” Nutter told CNN. “Clearly he was reckless and irresponsible in his actions.”


Surveillance video from a nearby industrial building captured an explosion as the speeding train derailed — and turned into a horror show of twisted wreckage and bloodied passengers.

Those killed in the tragedy include a former Queens valedictorian; a father of two who worked for The Associated Press; a Manhattan mom who was CEO of a tech company; a dean at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn; and an executive at Wells Fargo.

The crash between the North Philadelphia and Cornwells Heights stations also left 200 passengers injured, including eight in critical condition.

There were a total of 243 people on the train, including five crew members.

The train’s black box was recovered from the locomotive and is being examined by the NTSB.

“Against the enemies of freedom, enlightenment and progress we need to stand firm and in a timely manner, in order to prevent them from using weapons of mass destruction in order to realize their murderous agendas,” the prime minister said.

Netanyahu quoted a senior Iranian official who he said was quoted in Arab media sources on Wednesday as saying that Iran has God’s permission to liquidate Israel.


“These statements are being heard by the representatives taking part in negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, and the talks continue as normal,” Netanyahu said.

“We need to stand firm to prevent the Iranians from using weapons of mass destruction to carry out their will against Israel,” Netanyahu added.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R., Ariz.) is questioning why taxpayers had to subsidize NFL events honoring America’s troops. The Pentagon gave the NFL, which has revenues of nearly $10 billion, $5.4 million between 2011 and 2014 for pregame and halftime events that appeared to be put on by the football teams themselves.


The Hill reports: “It is troubling to learn that taxpayer funds are being used to compensate these teams for honoring and recognizing U.S. military service members,” Flake said Monday to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Chief of the National Guard Bureau Gen. Frank Grass.

During a panel discussion on poverty at Georgetown University, Obama specifically referred to his own Christian faith, pointing out that he recognized the importance speaking out about the issue as president.

“I think it would be powerful for our faith-based organizations to speak out on this in a more forceful fashion,” he said, admitting that his wish might sound “self-interested” because he had disagreements with Christian and Catholic organizations about gay marriage and abortion.

“There is great caring and great concern, but when it comes to what are you really going to the mat for, what’s the defining issue … this is often times viewed as a ‘nice to have’ relative to an issue like abortion,” Obama said.

He argued that churches should spend more time pursuing “powerful” ideas such as helping those in poverty in order to attract more followers.

“Nobody has shown that better than Pope Francis, who I think has been transformative just through the sincerity and insistence that this is vital to who we are, this is vital to following what Jesus Christ our Savior talked about.”

The apologetic, left-liberal report echoes one filed by the Obama administration five years ago, during which the State Department proudly told the Human Rights Council that the administration opposed Arizona’s new immigration law, among other alleged American misdeeds.

Critics of the UN note that “the UPR has become a place where abusers are applauded and democracies are heavily criticized,” and “Iran, Libya, China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia” are treated lightly.

Al-Jazeera America reported that the U.S. was subjected to scathing criticism from a variety of dictatorships after filing its report, including Chad, Pakistan, Russia, and China.

Iran, for example, complained about racial discrimination in the United States, among other criticisms, calling on the U.S. to “protect the rights of African-Americans against police brutality.” (The Iranian regime brutally represses its own population, and used police and paramilitaries to crush a pro-democracy protest in 2009.)

The Qatar-owned network piled on with a misleading headline: “US cited for police violence, racism in scathing UN review on human rights.”

The story implied that it was the UN that had targeted the United States, rather than the Obama administration targeting America–a rather telling conflation of America’s enemies with the Obama administration itself.

A representative of the Obama administration offered meekly: “The tragic deaths of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Michael Brown in Missouri, Eric Garner in New York, Tamir Rice in Ohio and Walter Scott in South Carolina have renewed a long-standing and critical national debate about the even-handed administration of justice.

“These events challenge us to do better and to work harder for progress–through both dialogue and action.”

The Obama administration also boasted to the UN about challenging “racially discriminatory voting laws in North Carolina and Texas,” though many UN member states have laws requiring voter photo identification, and similar laws have been upheld in the recent past by the U.S. Supreme Court as constitutional and non-discriminatory.

Michelle Obama used a speech Monday that was supposed to be celebrating the opening of a new museum to instead dig deeper the racial divide that’s been growing ever wider during her husband’s presidency. “Museums and concert halls,” she said, just don’t welcome non-white visitors – especially children – the way they welcome whites.

Speaking at the new Whitney museum in New York City’s meat packing district last week, Michelle Obama said she grew up thinking that museums were not places “for someone who looks like me.”

Every thing is about race with this family! Actually museums have always welcomed everyone, you have to act accordingly in one. You must be quiet and show respect. I am sure some parents know it is not a proper place for their children at an early age. But as a child grows they are able to follow the rules and enjoy all that a museum has to offer.

What a contrived load of RACIST BS her statement is! I see black people at the Symphony and museums all the time. What is she talking about?

“This isn’t about geriatric travel problems,” Krauthammer said. “This is a loud statement from the gulf states. You don’t have to be an expert. You have to be about 11 or older to understand what this statement is.”

Krauthammer said his failure to attend was a jab at the president over the Iran nuclear agreement.

“This is a rejection of the agreement that the United States is about to embark in with Iran by the states who are going to be very badly affected by and strongly object to it,” Krauthammer said.

The First Lady recalled her experience on the campaign trail, accusing the media of giving her unique attention thanks to the “fears and misperceptions of others” who questioned whether she was “too loud, or too angry, or too emasculating.”

She alluded to Fox News personalities discussing her “terrorist fist jab” and referring to her on-screen as “Obama’s baby mama” as well as Rush Limbaugh suggesting that she had “a little bit of uppityism” thanks to her nanny state food polices.

Mrs. Obama also referred to Michelle Malkin’s book “Culture of Corruption” in which she described the First Lady as one of Obama’s “cronies of color.”

“All of this used to really get to me,” she admitted, referring to a lot of “sleepless nights” on the campaign trail because she was “worrying about what people thought of me, wondering if I might be hurting my husband’s chances of winning his election, fearing how my girls would feel if they found out what some people were saying about their mom.”

She explained that over time, she learned to handle the increased scrutiny of her words and actions and focus on her own expectations.

“At the end of the day, by staying true to the me I’ve always known, I found that this journey has been incredibly freeing,” she said. “Because no matter what happened, I had the peace of mind of knowing that all of the chatter, the name calling, the doubting — all of it was just noise. It did not define me. It didn’t change who I was. And most importantly, it couldn’t hold me back.”

Obama also reminded the audience there were still people questioning her husband’s citizenship, and that he experienced his own “insults and slights” as a result of people’s “limited notion of the world.”

Security Threat Level Upped at Military Bases for 1st Time Since 2011

Jennifer Griffin reported that the force protection level has been increased to ForceCom Bravo, which is the highest that the threat level

The increase was ordered by the head of U.S. Northern Command due to unspecified terror threats. Spokespersons for the Department of Defense and Northern Command say that this was a prudent measure.

The increased security threat level will mean more guards at bases. It will also mean longer lines outside of bases, since two forms of ID will be required to enter.

One morning last week, the vet woke up to find his car smashed with the flag pole and the flag desecrated with a marker.

“The message that I would like to say is America is still the greatest country in the world,” Hernandez Garcia said on “Fox and Friends Weekend.” “It’s not something that we are just brainwashed with. We are still the greatest country. We got problems. Everybody does.”

A 79-year-old military veteran in Riverside County, California, said he noticed someone lurking in his neighbor’s lawn on Thursday and he felt obligated to make sure everything was OK.

The veteran, identified only as Richard, confronted the man and asked him what he was doing in the yard. It’s also relevant to note that he is always carrying a firearm for self-protection.

“I said, ‘What are you doing?’

“He said, ‘Well, my stuff is here.’

“I said, ‘No, it’s not here.’

“He said, Well, Steve lives here.’

“I said, ‘No, he doesn’t. You just better be on your way.’

“He said, ‘Well, you wouldn’t shoot me.’

“I said, ‘Well, test me.’”

When Richard ordered the suspect to put his hands on a nearby fence or get on the ground, the man reportedly attacked, punching the good Samaritan in the nose. Eventually, Richard was able to use his gun to strike the man in the foot, which caused him to back off.

The 79-year-old vet then gave the suspect a “choice.”

“If I run are you going to shoot me or kill me?” the suspect reportedly asked.

“Go for it,” Richard responded.

The suspect seemed to wise up at that point and Richard held the 25-year-old at gunpoint until police arrived. He now faces assault charges, according to CBS Los Angeles.

The one-time military man says he always has a gun on him for safety reasons.

“I’m not looking for any glory or anything. I just live in the neighborhood and want to be left alone,” Richard said.


“Nobody’s held accountable anymore, you know,” Richard said, reflecting on the incident. “They don’t have any respect. There’s no work ethic. I just won’t stand for it. You know, he picked on the wrong guy.”


Richard plans on pressing charges against the 25-year-old suspect, who was taken into custody and faces assault charges.

Ben Carson says the $7.25 federal minimum wage should be raised.

“I think, probably, it should be higher than now,” Carson told CNBC’s John Harwood in an interview Friday.

Carson added that government assistance often provides more than the minimum wage in several states, allowing people to ignore the long-term benefits of a job.

"I don't necessarily blame people for saying, 'Look, I can stay home and make this money, or I can go and work this little chicken job that doesn't have many benefits,’ ” he said.

"However, recognize that if you go and take that chicken job, you gain skills, relationships, the possibility of moving up the ladder. So a year or two or five down the road, you're no longer in that position. This is what people have forgotten."

His stance on the minimum wage makes Carson an outlier among the likely field of GOP opponents and comes with Democrats looking to make it a key issue in the 2016 election.

Before Mr. Carson proposes to increase the “Federal Minimum Wage”, he should enlighten We the People as to where he finds the authority to establish a minimum wage at all.

Fox News host Megyn Kelly delivered a passionate monologue Thursday evening about free speech in the wake of a controversial “draw Muhammad” event that has stirred debate nationwide.

“We don’t compromise America’s bedrock principles just to make other nations like us more,” Kelly said.

Two suspects were fatally shot Sunday after opening fire outside the venue of the “draw Muhammad” cartoon contest. A recruiter for the Islamic State was thought to have been in contact with one of the individuals before the shooting.

The Fox News host came out strongly this week in support of free speech, contending one doesn’t have to support the organizer of the cartoon contest to support the right to host it.

“The bottom line here is that some in this country have been so busy trying to figure out how to avoid causing any religion any offense they have forgotten what is offensive to Americans: those who would trample on our core ideals,” Kelly said.
“In America we stand for liberty and freedom to offend, to provoke, to persuade and to defy,” she concluded.

A former teen terrorist who killed a U.S. Army Delta Force medic in Afghanistan in 2002 was ordered released Thursday by a Canadian judge who said the former Guantanamo Bay detainee once sentenced to 40 years in prison has changed his jihadist ways.


Omar Khadr, a Canadian citizen who was just 15 when he threw the grenade that killed U.S. Army medic Christopher Speer in Afghanistan during a 2002 firefight, was ordered freed on bail by an Edmonton appeals judge. Now 28, Khadr claims to be a different person from the young Al Qaeda follower who admitted killing Speer, but critics say he has not paid the price.

FBI and intelligence community officials are openly admitting how difficult it has become to track the thousands of potential American jihadists on social media.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), who serves as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said in a recent hearing that there are “thousands” of people living in the U.S. who have promoted extremist groups, such as the Islamic State, on social media pages, the Associated Press reports.

The new concerns about tracking social media stem from a Sunday jihadist attack at a “Draw Muhammad” free speech event in Garland, Texas, where two gunmen armed with AK47s attempted to commit mass murder against the event’s attendees. Luckily, a skilled security officer neutralized the two men, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, before they could do any real harm.

There are “hundreds, if not thousands,” of people like Simpson and Soofi whom the intelligence community are attempting to track, explained Don Borelli, a 25-year veteran in FBI terrorism investigations, to an Arizona NBC affiliate.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the intelligence community has opened up an investigation into the Islamic State’s claim that it ordered the attack.

“This is consistent with what has been previously described as a lone-wolf attack,” Earnest told reporters. “Essentially you have two individuals that don’t appear to be part of a broader conspiracy, and identifying those individuals and keeping tabs on them is difficult work,” he added.

Megyn Kelly has been pretty fired up this week about the Texas shooting outside a “Draw Muhammad” cartoon contest. She clashed with Bill O’Reilly and has stood pretty firm on the free speech issue.

And Kelly opened her show last night by scolding the “rush to condemn the event organizers” with “nary a mention of the radical Islamists who sought to murder them over a cartoon.”

She reiterated that free speech is protected, “no matter how abhorrent,” and you don’t have to endorse it to defend it. And with all the focus on scolding Pamela Geller‘s group, Kelly said, “if this is where American sentiment stands on this, then the jihadis are officially winning.”


Kelly even accused the media of drawing a “moral equivalence” between people who do offensive things and people who kill over those offensive things. She brought on Eugene Volokh to continue emphasizing the point, going after the media and CNN’s Chris Cuomo in particular.

"Here in the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has become a date when we recognize and celebrate our relationship and our ties to Mexico and the great contributions of the Mexican-American community to our country," he says in the video.

"For me, this relationship is very profound." Bush goes on to note that his wife, Columba, is from Mexico, and his family has "strong ties with Mexico." He said he has "great respect and affection" for Mexicans.

He met Columba while on an exchange program in León, Mexico. The video comes as Bush weighs a bid for president.

Pentagon: People Have Nothing To Fear From Upcoming ‘Jade Helm’ Exercises


Defense officials Monday dismissed as “wild speculation” an Internet-fueled claim that a massive summertime exercise called Jade Helm 15 for special operations commandos is a covert operation by President Barack Obama to take over Texas.

That claim was given legitimacy by Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott’s order last week for the Texas State Guard to monitor the exercises.

“Operation Jade Helm poses no threat to any American’s civil liberties,” Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said Monday. “Operation Jade Helm is being conducted by Americans – by, specifically, American special forces personnel.”

Jade Helm 15 will be one of the biggest peacetime military exercises in six decades. Starting July 15 and lasting two months, thousands of Army Rangers, Green Berets, Navy SEALS and other special operations forces will simulate war missions in mainly remote areas of Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.

Jade Helm 15 will take place on tracts of both public and private land in the seven states.

“In every case, extensive coordination has been completed with whoever’s responsible for that land,” Warren said. “In the case of private land, we’ve spoken and made detailed coordination with the patriotic Americans who have volunteered their land for the use of this important training.”

The Texas State Guard said Monday it would follow Abbot’s order. Asked by McClatchy whether it felt compelled to mobilize troops in order to monitor the exercises, Lt. Col. Joanne MacGregor, the unit’s public affairs officer, responded: “The Texas State Guard stands ready to support the governor of Texas when called upon to serve.”

Leaders of the Texas State Guard “are in the process of examining the best way to meet the governor’s intent,” MacGregor said. She said they are working with the U.S. Special Operations Command “in order to alleviate any possible public concerns.”

At the Pentagon, Warren said: “This is training that we’ve coordinated in great detail with both state and local officials in the various states that we’ll be conducting it.”

Abbott’s order infuriated some fellow Republicans. Former state Rep. Todd Smith, a GOP lawyer from Euless who served in the Texas legislature for 16 years, posted online Saturday what he termed an “open letter” to Abbott.

“As one of the remaining Republicans who actually believes in making decisions based on facts and evidence – you used to be a judge? – I am appalled that you would give credence to the nonsense mouthed by those who instead make decisions based on Internet or radio- or shock-jock-driven hysteria,” Smith wrote. “Is there ANYBODY who is going to stand up to this radical nonsense that is a cancer on our State and Party?”

Democrats, too, expressed dismay.

“The first thing the governor should have done when he heard about concerns with U.S. military training is to support our troops and reassure the public that our U.S. military poses absolutely no threat to Texans,” said Manny Garcia, executive director of the Texas Democratic Party. “Instead, he gave credence to conspiracy theorists by ordering the Texas State Guard to monitor U.S. military operations.”

Abbott, however, on Monday defended his decision.


“We are playing a pivotal role of government and that is to provide information to people who have questions,” Abbott told reporters after a prayer breakfast in North Austin, according to the Texas Tribune, a nonprofit media organization based in Austin.

The Texas State Guard, established in 1871, has 1,900 members. Unlike the Texas National Guard, it cannot operate outside Texas and cannot be pressed into national service by the president.

Abbott, 57, took office Jan. 15 after serving as Texas attorney general for more than 14 years. When he ran for governor last year, his campaign website described him as “one of the nation’s leading advocates for stopping the federal overreach of the Obama administration.”

In a letter to Maj. Gen. Gerald “Jake” Betty last week, Abbott directed the commander of the Texas State Guard to mobilize his forces during Jade Helm 15.


“During the training operation, it is important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed,” Abbott wrote.

Abbott’s order set off a social media firestorm between his defenders and those who mocked him.

Several people tweeted to say that the Pentagon, with some two dozen U.S. military bases in Texas – including Fort Hood, the nation’s second-largest, with 45,000 soldiers – wouldn’t need to send in special operations commandos if it wanted to take over the state.

Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican who is running for president, said Texans were right to be worried.


“You know, I understand the concern that’s been raised by a lot of citizens about Jade Helm,” Cruz told Bloomberg on Saturday during the South Carolina Republican Party’s annual convention. “It’s a question I’m getting a lot. And I think part of the reason is, we have seen for six years a federal government disrespecting the liberty of the citizens, and that produces fear. When you see a federal government that is attacking our free speech rights, our religious liberty rights, our Second Amendment rights, that produces distrust as to government.”

Not all Texans have reacted with hostility to Jade Helm 15. After the Army made presentations to the Big Spring City Council and the Howard County Commission, two local agencies in West Texas, the Big Spring City Council passed a resolution granting the Army permission to train within its city limits.

The Pentagon has been criticized in the past for having failed to give advance notice to residents of areas that hosted training exercises.

People in a Houston neighborhood were terrified in 2013 when special operations troops swooped into a local school as a part of an exercise.

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan wants you to eat more insects. Why? It’s better for the environment and your health, he argues.

“Keeping meat consumption to levels recommended by health authorities would lower emissions and reduce heart disease, cancer, and other diseases,” Annan told The Guardian Sunday.

“And of course there are alternative sources of protein. For example, raising insects as an animal protein source,” Annan said. “Insects have a very good conversion rate from feed to meat. They make up part of the diet of two billion people and are commonly eaten in many parts of the world.”

“Eating insects is good for the environment and balanced diets,” Annan said.

Insects are reported to emit fewer greenhouse gases and less ammonia than cattle or pigs, and they require significantly less land and water than cattle rearing,” the U.N. reported in 2013. “Compared with mammals and birds, insects may also pose less risk of transmitting zoonotic infections to humans, livestock and wildlife, although this topic requires further research.”

These “peak beefers” also note that insects “are a highly nutritious and healthy food source with high fat, protein, vitamin, fibre and mineral content.”

The Obama administration recently outlined a plan to reduce methane emissions from the livestock industry, but the administration has yet to ask Americans to incorporate bugs into their diets.

“The global livestock industry is indeed a major threat to the climate as it represents 14.5% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,” Annan said. “A growing population and a rapidly growing middle class are increasing pressure on the traditional protein sources, beef and poultry meat, making it more difficult to meet demand.”

“We cannot continue the way we are producing and consuming meat,” he added. “Obviously, this should not go as far as governments telling people what to eat.”

Here’s Dr. Ben Carson on “Fox & Friends” this morning saying he supports the decision by the Baltimore Prosecutor to bring charges against six Baltimore Police Officers.

His stated reason was that “tensions were mounting” in the city – the very reasoning Law Professor Alan Dershowitz said should NOT have been used to bring charges. Dershowitz said the charges are “crowd control,” which is a “sad day for Justice.” I agree with Dershowitz. Carson is supporting a Prosecutor who has horribly overcharged the officers as well, something Carson never commented on.

Two men were shot in a parking lot outside the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland Sunday afternoon, SWAT officials told News 8.

Those men possibly had explosives on them, SWAT officials said. Everyone at the center, which was hosting a Muhammad Art exhibit, was told to find a safe place inside the building.

SWAT members were at the scene for the event.

The terrorists drove up to the Culwell Event Center in North Garland, got out of their car and began shooting just as the "Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest" inside was coming to an end, Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said.

An unarmed security guard was shot in the leg. He was later treated and released from a hospital.

Police who were helping with security at the event fired back, killing both gunmen.

"The first suspect was shot immediately," Garland Mayor Douglas Athas told CNN. "The second suspect was wounded and reached for his backpack. He was shot again."

The gunmen's identities weren't immediately released.

"We have no other indication that anyone else was involved," Athas said.

FBI and local officials were checking on the gunmen's vehicle for explosives and the area around the center was blocked off.

Surrounding businesses, including a Walmart, were evacuated, as were attendees from the Curtis Culwell Center.

There is no immediate threat to the area, police said late Sunday night.

The check for explosives was a precautionary measure and could take some time.

"It's a very slow, tedious operation that goes on," Harn said.

In fact, part of Yasir Qadhi’s preaching includes rhetoric that says non-Muslims lives are forfeit and their property is legal for Muslims to take in jihad, (and this would include women as sex slaves) Recently Yasir Qadhi said that “Jews and Christians filthy, their lives and property can be taken in jihad by the Muslims.”

Yasir Qadhi is not only a Memphil Imam, but is is also the Dean of Academic Affairs at the Al-Maghrib Institute. He is a hafiz (has memorized the Qur’an) and he has an M.A. in the Islamic Creed and a B.A. in Islamic Sciences from Islamic University of Medina, as well as a master’s and a doctorate in Islamic Studies from Yale. During a lecture on Shirk, or polytheism, Yasir Qadhi said that Jews and Christians are mushrikoon, or polytheists, because they have made partners with Allah. From Yasir Qadhi’s perspective, only Muslims are monotheists.


He also claims that it is the responsibility of every single human being to bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and him alone. Now pay attention here. Yasir Qadhi now will tell you what the result and command that stems from this twisted principle.

“And it is because of this same principle of monotheism that the prophet has been commanded to do jihad.”

OK, now we’re getting somewhere. Did all of you alleged “moderate” Muslims out there get that? Of course, you did. You know this. You know jihad is not just some internal struggle. It isn’t about losing weight or getting in shape or some personal goal to be obtained. It is a holy war to advance the caliphate, the Islamic State. While “jihad is not the goal”, Qadhi says, “it is the means. It is a means to establish monotheism on the land,”. Let me translate that for any who are still skeptical and buying into the lie that Islam is peaceful. Jihad is a means, a violent means, to an end, or goal, where Islam dominates the United States.

A former terror suspect has been named as one of the gunmen shot dead by police after two attackers blasted an unarmed security guard in the ankle during an anti-Islam art contest in Texas on Sunday night.


“Two heavily-armed men, who are believed to have been carrying explosives, were killed by police after opening fire outside the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Dallas, at around 7pm during a controversial event where caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad were being displayed.

“A senior FBI official has identified one of the men as Elton Simpson, who was previously the subject of a terror investigation, according to ABC News.

“After his identity emerged, FBI agents and a bomb squad swarmed Simpson’s apartment in north Phoenix, Arizona and used a robot to carry out the first sweep of his home, the channel reported. The second gunman’s identity is not yet known.

“Ahead of the attack on Sunday evening, several Twitter messages were sent out, and authorities believe Simpson was behind them. The last one was shared just half an hour before the attack.

“Followers of ISIS had been calling for an attack online for more than a week after learning that the competition in Garland would feature a ‘draw Muhammad’ art contest, with a prize of $10,000 for the best caricature.

“After the attack, the SITE Intelligence Group reported that an Islamic State fighter claimed on Twitter that the shooting was carried out by two pro-ISIS individuals.



“In a series of tweets and links, a jihadist named as Abu Hussain AlBritani, which SITE said was British IS fighter Junaid Hussain, claimed that ‘2 of our brothers just opened fire’ at the Prophet Muhammad exhibition in Texas.


‘They Thought They Was Safe In Texas From The Soldiers of The Islamic State,’ added the tweet.”


They were “safe in Texas” and will be, as long as lib-left politicians of the day allow police forces to do their job and sworn commitment to protect the public.


What happened in Garland last night underlines how the riots in Baltimore—which at heart seek to replace police forces with the military-styled one coveted by President Barack Obama—have ties to terrorism. The Nation of Islam—personally thanked by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who have thrown in with the Bloods and the Crips are masquerading as the ‘good guys’ fighting the ‘bad guys’ (police).

SIMI VALLEY, California — Two noted veterans took to the stage on Monday evening at the Ronald Reagan Library. Former Texas Governor Rick Perry, who is likely gearing up for a presidential announcement, arrived to introduce former Navy SEAL and author of Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell.


Perry, 65, served as a captain in the Air Force, and Luttrell’s story of surviving an ambush in Afghanistan is well known. Beyond the friendship and evident respect they share for one another, Perry and Luttrell said they share a special father-son-type relationship.

“Tonight you are going to have the great privilege to hear from someone who simply understood that he owed a debt–a debt to the individuals who had come before him,” Perry said.

He continued:


We are in the presence of some extraordinary human beings and none more so than the one you’ll hear from tonight, who is just a regular, common country boy who found himself in extraordinary circumstances and realizes how fortunate he is to be here. And until he takes his dying breath, he will honor those individuals who served before him. … He will honor this country and what this country stands for around the world.


Luttrell, 39, took the stage, speaking candidly and using humor to draw the audience into his otherwise morose stories. He recounted his experience serving our country and his close ties to the Perry Family.

“I was the creepy guy in the attic,” he said, explaining that they had taken him in and were the only family he had when he showed up one day, unannounced, at the governor’s mansion in 2007.

Ever since that fateful day, Mrs. Anita Perry had helped nurse him back to health following extensive damage to his body from the war, including to his spine.

Luttrell recalled that he was never the strongest link in the SEAL chain. He said he was never the weakest, either, which meant those around him never had to worry about him breaking. He then told the audience about the day he found his breaking point. It was the day his fellow SEAL and brother in arms, Mike, was killed in Afghanistan:


I was sitting in my boots, shaking and he kept screaming, “I need your help up here man. I need your help.” And it got so intense that I actually put my weapon down over my leg and covered my ears … because I couldn’t stand to hear him die. … And that was the last time I saw him.


He said the one thing they could not put in the film about his book was how many times he and his brothers got knocked out. “Normally, you get knocked out one time a year, maybe. I got knocked out six times in the gun fights. I was tucking my brain back into my ears, man. My hands were shaking, [and] I couldn’t see anything, really,” he told the captivated audience.

One by one, each of his SEAL teammates was killed. Luttrell had escaped the deadly clutches of the Taliban several times. Then the day arrived when he thought perhaps his end was near, too. But his life was spared by an Afghani villager named Mohammad Gulab, who found Luttrell and took him into his home.

Luttrell spoke of the importance of discipline and respect. Although he said his father was never really around, he explained that he taught him to “respect yourself and respect … other people. And the only time you lose your respect is when you lose your discipline. And you’re the only one who can go that way.”

During his time on tour in Afghanistan, he said, “Only three people kept in touch with me: my mother, my brother, and Governor Perry.”

He added, “Governor Perry taught me how to be a good man and to be a good husband. Not only does he have to take care of his own family, but the state of Texas. That’s a big deal, [and] that’s important.”

Luttrell lived with the Perry family until he met his wife, Melanie. The couple has two children.

“That’s my family,” he said of the Perrys. And “they’re the best thing that ever happened to me. … Thanks for being my best friend, my father figure, and for teaching me the important values that I learned after the military. That’s why you’re the godfather of my kids, man.”

Police officers across the country are shocked by Friday’s news that six Baltimore cops were charged with the murder of Freddie Gray. Many worry that they will be prevented from doing their job going forward.

On Friday, after Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby charged the six officers with numerous charges including murder, it sent a chilling message to police everywhere.

NPR had reaction from several police officers and police officials, but suffice it to say they are worried for their safety on the job as well as fearful of prosecution.

“The specter of criminal charges being filed against police officers I believe is going to send reverberations across the nation,” the operator of the police academy in Washington state, Sue Rahr, told NPR on Friday.

The president of Houston’s Police Union, Ray Hunt, noted that he feels that police now have fewer rights than the potential criminals they deal with. “There is a mood among some in this country that the police are going to be wrong unless proven right,” Hunt said.

Police feel their hands are being tied by politicians and the courts on a range of issues. Earlier this year, for instance, police in San Diego complained that they were not being allowed to “combat crime” in their city over the issue of what is to be done about homelessness.

As to the specific charges in Baltimore, the Fraternal Order of Police called the accusation that police murdered Freddie Gray a “rush to judgment.”

“I believe that the publicity in this case is a driving force to a rush to judgment and causing this prosecution to move so quickly,” union rep Michael Davey said on Friday.

“In my 20-year career as a law enforcement officer and 16 years as an attorney, I have never seen such a rush to file criminal charges, which I believe are driven by forces separate and apart from the application of law and the facts of this case as we’ve heard them,” Davey told the media.

There is no doubt that more and more police officers feel as if their hands have been tied and that they are being prevented from doing their job.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. talked to Stuart Varney this morning on Fox Business Network after criminal charges were announced against six Baltimore police officers in the death of Freddie Gray.

State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said this morning that the medical examiner ruled Gray’s death a homicide.

The charges against the six officers ranged from second-degree murder, to involuntary manslaughter to assault.

Clarke said the charges seem politically motivated, but emphasized that the judicial process must be allowed to play out.

"I think this is very political. From the tone of her voice, [Mosby] sounded almost exuberant in her announcement when she really needs to remember that she represents the state in this, not a protest movement, and not trying to appease an angry crowd," said Clarke.

The he three-day event will see George W. Bush mountain biking with nearly 20 wounded warriors injured in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Each spring, approximately 20 servicemen and women wounded in the global war on terror join President George W. Bush for a 100-kilometer mountain bike ride. Part of the Bush Institute's Military Service Initiative, the W100K highlights the bravery and sacrifice of warriors and recognizes organizations that support America’s veterans.

Seventeen wounded veterans joined former President George W. Bush at his Central Texas ranch Thursday morning for the first day of his institute’s annual 100-kilometer bike ride.

The fifth annual Warrior 100K, which is part of the George W. Bush Institute’s military service initiative, is a three-day bike ride to honor service members injured in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Before setting off on the 12-mile ride around the president’s ranch, Bush shook hands with all of the warriors before getting on his red, white and blue bike–that was outfitted with the presidential seal.

Bush’s rider number was–of course—43.

Trek Bicycle Corporation donated a bike to each of the warriors Wednesday night in preparation for the ride.

After quick opening remarks, which ended with Bush saying “let’s ride!” the riders set out on the nearly hour-and-a-half long bike ride.

Throughout the trail, which took the vets through creeks and down slick ravines, Bush could be heard encouraging the group and yelling out his signature trail calls: “Yeah, baby!” and “That’s what I’m talking about!” He also offered an Elvis impersonation, saying “thank you, thank you very much.”

During one part of the trail, in which the group passed through a water crossing, where the water was deeper than expected, the warriors could be heard cheering as they made their way through.

“There were a couple spots where some of [the water] came to my calves and this was deeper than I thought, my pedals were under water and my feet were wet, but this is a blast,” said Command Sgt. Major Brian Flom. “You don’t want to come clean right on the road–you are mountain biking.”

Flom, who was injured during a rocket attack in Baghdad in October 2007, is one of this year’s Warrior 100K riders.

The weekend continues with a 30-mile course Friday and a 20-mile ride Saturday.

Bush has said the ride serves as a reminder of the extraordinary resilience displayed by the country’s more than 2.5 million post-9/11 veterans. The former president has made veteran’s well-being and their re-entry into society one of the institute’s priorities.

U.S. and Qatari officials began talks Wednesday about extending security assurances for five senior Taliban members who were released from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and whose transfer to Qatar triggered an outcry on Capitol Hill.

The talks could lead to an extension of at least some aspects of a one-year arrangement that required Qatar to keep the former prisoners under supervision and ban them from leaving. They could also lead to the former detainees being transferred to another country, according to individuals familiar with the discussions. The agreement expires at the end of May.

In the talks, being held in Doha, the Qatari capital, administration officials presented a number of options for the future status of the aging Taliban leaders, who live with their families on a special compound as guests of the tiny Persian Gulf nation.

The approaching end of the agreement has sparked new ire among lawmakers still angry about the transfer.


"These are dangerous terrorists who, by the Administration's own admission, should not be allowed to return to Afghanistan," Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said in a statement. "It is troubling then that the White House has waited this long to begin deliberation on how to prevent that."

The administration transferred the men in May 2014 in exchange for the release of Bergdahl, a U.S. soldier who was held captive in Pakistan by the Taliban and its allies for almost five years after leaving his base in eastern Afghanistan. In March, the army charged Bergdahl with desertion.

Under the existing deal, the men's telephone and electronic communications have been monitored and they have been prohibited from fundraising or militant incitement.
