People Stunned By Newt Gingrich's Post-Nevada Speech Last Saturday: ‘This Is What Flailing Looks Like’

Fox News Channel analysts seemed stunned by Newt Gingrich’s post-Nevada speech Saturday, calling it everything from “not pretty” to a “very strange event.”

“For a political analyst I think this will be remembered as one of the most remarkable moments of the entire 2012 election,” The Hill’s A.B. Stoddard said. “He came out and wandered into the minutiae about petty complaints…he was in the weeds. It was a very, very strange event.”

Charles Krauthammer said Gingrich’s speech represented “the best of Newt and the worst of Newt” — describing what he called President Barack Obama’s attack on religious institutions and defending freedom in the country was good, but his attacks on rival Mitt Romney, who won the state handily, were “astonishing.”

Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard was perplexed by Gingrich’s reference to Nevada as a “heavily Mormon state,“ calling it ”an odd statement” for him to make, and said he was “being a political analyst, not the candidate.”

“This is what flailing looks like,” Weekly Standard writer Stephen Hayes summed up. “This was not a pretty performance I think by Newt Gingrich….He makes these arguments that undermine the rationale for his own campaign. He says ‘well, Mitt Romney was dishonest on the stage next to me.‘ What does he think Barack Obama’s going to be? ‘I was outspent.‘ What does he think Barack Obama’s going to do?”

Wild Thing's comment......

I agree with everything they said about his speech. It was also embarassing as a conservative to hear his whine and also his lies.

..I like some aspects of Newt but he carries too much baggage, too many negatives and he is a "ticking time bomb" for some ill-conceived comment that could derail everything we are working for. We need to take a look at Rick Santorum. He is not perfect-he carries a few pieces of "luggage' but no major baggage compared to Newt-or Romney. Mainly Santorum was a bit of a "party animal" for Bush and GOP leaders while in the Senate, but he had reasonable explanations for his behavior. A recent Rasmussen poll shows that he is the one GOP prospect who outpolls Obama. Yet he lags in GOP primaries. Me no comprende. To me, he looks like the right guy. Just sayin'...

Gingrich is as loony as John McCain and Ron Paul.

Willy, I agree, Newt just has too much baggage.

I am really concerned Obama will win again, that is my biggest concern. I just hope and pray that the candidate that wins the GOP can pull it off. Then I will worry what they will do. haha One worry at a time for me.

Tom, with all the things we are finding out about him I agree. I never knew half this stuff we have found out about.

This is the weirdest election.
