Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Funeral of 9-Yr-Old Girl Murdered in Tucson

Arizona residents are locking arms to stop the Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funerals for victims of Saturday's shooting in Tucson, with bikers and others organizing a massive counter-protest and state lawmakers fast-tracking a bill to hamstring the group.

The Kansas-based Westboro church is notorious for showing up at the funerals of dead soldiers and other high-profile gatherings wielding anti-gay signs.

But when the church announced it would picket the funeral Thursday for the 9-year-old girl fatally shot over the weekend at a Tucson grocery store by a gunman who allegedly killed five others and injured 14 others attending a town-hall session by Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Tucson- and Phoenix-area residents started organizing immediately.

They may not be able to stop them, but they plan on giving the grieving family as much of a buffer as possible between the protesters and the service.

Arizona state lawmakers approved emergency legislation that would order protesters to stay 300 feet away from the funeral. The bill passed unanimously in the House and the Senate is now headed to Gov. Jan Brewer for her expected signature

Fred Phelps, pastor of Westboro, was a fundraiser for Al Gore and five time candidate for political office in Democrat primaries.

If Phelps ran for office as a Republican and was a fund raiser for Bob Dole, you can bet your life the news media would giver this 24/7 coverage.

It seems like a bit of an obsessed cult hiding behind a good name. This is why we worry about what is going on in mosques. We aren't stupid.

This Westboro inbred bunch has a special place in hell set aside for them. Jan's point is a very good one.

I would love to see the Westboro cult get their collective asses kicked and I mean physically kicked. No jury would convict anyone of being mean to them.

Doesn't matter if its unConstitutional as long as they can chase them away who cares if it gets overturned. And besides, when they trample on the Rights of others they are violating the Rights of private citizens and the government can step in and defend those citizens.

Jan, well said, that is exactly why I am concerned about the mosques and what might be going on inside.

Stogie, they really are. I will never forget when I first heard about them a few years ago. I sat in shock just starring at the words at their website. I never knew people like that existed in this world.
