Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer slams 'foreign interference' in immigration lawsuit

In a new twist in the fight over Arizona’s immigration law, Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Tuesday asked a federal court to disallow foreign governments from joining the U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit to overturn the law.

The move comes in response to a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling issued Monday, allowing nearly a dozen Latin American countries — Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Chile — to submit friend-of-the-court briefs in Justice’s challenge to SB 1070, which Brewer signed into law in April and is considered one of the nation’s toughest immigration-enforcement measures.

“As do many citizens, I find it incredibly offensive that these foreign governments are using our court system to meddle in a domestic legal dispute and to oppose the rule of law,” the Republican governor said in a statement shortly after the state’s motion was filed Tuesday evening.
“What’s even more offensive is that this effort has been supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. American sovereignty begins in the U.S. Constitution and at the border,” she added. “I am confident the 9th Circuit will do the right thing and recognize foreign interference in U.S. legal proceedings and allow the State of Arizona to respond to their brief.”

Brewer and her supporters have said the state law is necessary because the federal government has failed to protect the border and enforce immigration laws. But the Justice Department — with strong backing from President Barack Obama — sued to block the Arizona law on constitutional grounds.

Wild Thing's comment........

This is truly treasonous.

Jan Brewer is right, it is NONE of their damn business! These outsiders have no standing. It is outrageous to permit foreign countries to sue us for our domestic policy.

How can this freak sink any lower and how can so many Americans put up with him?

How are these 11 countries allowed to be involved in our problem. It is none of their business. Unless of course, they like, Mexico are trying to get rid of their own dead wood. And send them north to the States.

Hopefully, Arizona will follow this all the way to the Supreme court. Get obama's 'favoritism' law suit thrown out. The scumbag obama, hates this country and he proves it everyday. This lawsuit is virtually declaring war on a State within the United States. This should be an impeachable offense. God knows there are enough charges against him already for impeachment, but this one is most ergregious.

Maybe Arizona and other states need to sue these foreign countries for reimbursement of services provided to their citizens who are in this country illegally.

Just some more of the creeping globalization we have been watching for years. The past four presidents have been giving away America's sovereignty bit by bit. obama has only speeded up the process of leading America into the age of the "New World Order". The courts and the Congress are just as much to blame. I can only wonder what it is that has led these powerful people to attempt to cede our sovereignty and wonderful exceptionalism to a Second World status.

I have to agree with all of you. WT, Mark, BobF, TomR. Giving our nation away one bit at a time and the people just sit back and take it. We need to throw Congress out in November and hold those newy elected to account. Mis-step and throw them out next election.

I agree with all of you, as well.

Jan Brewer in her response stated that, "she was confident that the 9th Circuit will do the right thing", good luck with that. The 9th Circuit is the most liberal of all of the Circuits and has the highest rate of overturns, by the Supreme Court.

No I am afraid that this case is going all the way to the Supreme Court and then it will be a close decision, what with Kagan, the noted Legal Scholar, now sitting in judgement.

We can only hope that the Supreme Court does not refer to International Law, as they have been doing, more often,of late.

Mark, I don't get it, I would never have thought other countries could have anything pull to our States.

BobF., that is an excellent idea.

Tom, yes that really is what it is about....globalization. It is hard for me to get used to that, I sure don't like it at all.

Bob A., Ditto that!!!

Sean I agree. I realize Jan Brewer is trying to remain positive and I would release the same kind of statement she did. But in my heart I would be sweating bullets as to what might happen. Sometimes it does help the outcome to get it in the media and influnece those making the decision, but waaaa so far it has not helped like with that other judge. yuk
