In 1864, the democrats were calling Lincoln the "widow maker", Grant was called "the butcher. " After 30 days in May ( the troops called it 30 days in the valley of the shadow of death), from the Wilderness to Cold Harbor, from May 1 to just about the end of July the North suffered approximately 38,000 casualties. It was thought to be so bad, even some Republicans, decided to run their own candidate against Lincoln. The democrats wanted to sue for peace and leave the status quo. They of course pulled the same treasonous tactics they have become famous for, "the party of the little guy" the party of putting a knife in the back of the little guy.
So had the democrats had their way Slavery would still be an institution in the United States. Since most democrats are illiterate they wouldn't know history anyway.
But the people of the United States wanted Victory and re-elected Lincoln and Victory came 10 months later.
