Obama delivers remarks to servicemembers at the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.
The Commanders on the ground are asking that troops be rushed over so that the one's already in harm's way have the reinforcements they need...
Obama: "And while I will never hesitate to use force to protect the American people or our vital interests, I also promise you this, and this is very important as we consider our next steps in Afghanistan: I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm's way. I won't risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. And if it is necessary, we will back you up to the hilt. Because you deserve the strategy, the clear mission, and the defined goals as well as the equipment and support that you need to get the job done. We are not going to have a situation in which you are not fully supported back here at home. That is a promise that I will always make to you."
October deadliest month for US in Afghan war
KABUL
Roadside bombs — the biggest killer of U.S. soldiers — claimed eight more American lives Tuesday, driving the U.S. death toll to a record level for the third time in four months as President Barack Obama nears a decision on a new strategy for the troubled war.
The homemade bombs, also called improvised explosive devices or IEDs, are responsible for between 70 percent and 80 percent of the casualties among U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan and have become a weapon of "strategic influence," said Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz in Washington.
The attacks Tuesday followed one of the deadliest days for the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan — grim milestones likely to fuel the debate in the United States over whether the conflict is worth the sacrifice.
Both attacks Tuesday took place in the southern province of Kandahar, said Capt. Adam Weece, a spokesman for American forces in the south. The region bordering the Pakistan frontier has long been an insurgent stronghold and was the birthplace of the Taliban in the 1990s.
The Americans were patrolling in armored vehicles when a bomb ripped through one of them, killing seven service members and an Afghan civilian, U.S. forces spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Vician said.
The eighth American died in a separate bombing elsewhere in the south, also while patrolling in a military vehicle, Vician said.
The number of effective IED attacks in Afghanistan has grown from 19 in September 2007 to 106 last month.
"It's a weapon system that the enemy has figured out has strategic impact," said Metz, who leads the U.S. military organization tasked with defeating improvised explosive devices. "It really hampers our ability to execute a counterinsurgency doctrine. And it's a weapon system that has to be fought, and I don't think we can back off or shy away from fighting it."
The deaths came one day after 11 American soldiers were killed in separate helicopter crashes, marking the biggest loss of American life on a single day in four years.
One chopper went down in western Afghanistan as it left the scene of a gunbattle with insurgents. Seven soldiers were killed along with three Drug Enforcement Administration agents — the agency's first deaths since it began operations here in 2005. Afghanistan is the world's largest producer of opium and the trade is a major source of funding for insurgent groups.
Two other U.S. choppers collided while in flight in the south Monday, killing four Americans.
Casualties swelled at the start of the month when eight U.S. soldiers were killed Oct. 3. Several hundred militants had launched a coordinated attack on a pair of remote U.S. outposts in mountainous Nuristan province's Kamdesh district. U.S. troops pulled out days later as part a new strategy by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, to shut down difficult-to-defend posts and redirect forces toward larger population areas to protect more civilians.
Also Tuesday, NATO-led forces announced they had recovered the remains of three American military contractors from the wreckage of a U.S. Army reconnaissance plane that crashed two weeks ago in Nuristan.
Wild Thing's comment......
Blood on Hussein’s hands. As if he cares.
23 troops dead in 2 days and ALL Obama's fault. If they had more troops and if the R.O.E'S were changed to something that favored our troops it would be a different story.
I never had this rage about anyone in my life like I do for this Muslim in the White House. The data on iCasualies site for Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and the data from their data re to Iraq War casualties show that the Allies (SANS USA) incurred almost twice as many deaths in Afghanistan as they have in Iraq; 586 in Afghanistan 318 in Iraq.
How many more US soldiers have to die before B. Hussein Obama does what only his generals—his most qualified voices—tell him to do regarding troop levels?! Dick Cheney is absolutely correct for decrying Obama as dithering while US troops are in battle because all you have to do is count the number of US war dead in Afghanistan from the time that Gen. McChrystal asked Obama for more troops, which was waaaay back on Aug. 30th! It is the opinion of this writer that less US troops would’ve died—so the ones that did die were preventable deaths—if Obama would’ve just done the sensible thing and given McChrystal what he needed then and there.

Charles Krauthammer says Obama needs to be "honest, forthright, and courageous". I'm sorry but those three characteristics are not within Barrack Obama.

Current U.S. deaths, lack of action and Taliban resurgence?
It's all Bush's fault!
It's all Bush's fault!
It's all Bush's fault!
It's all Bush's fault!
Um, how exactly, liberals?

He wants it to fail so our kids have to come home with their tails tucked between their legs in shame. The media has also ruined it. They are so treasonous it's not funny. And to think at one point in my life, I wanted to be a journalist. They need something to blame Bush for and they aren't finding it, so they're pissed off mad and our kids have to suffer from it.

It's a trait of all die hard communists that human life is expendable if it suits their agenda. Obama has insulted and alientated all our allies and has embraced our enemies, in doing so he has abandoned the troops on the battlefield, this can't be blamed on Bush or anyone else but the cabal in congress under Pelosi-Reid and that half breed Kenyan they claim as their president. Progressive and Liberalism my ass, it's Communism!!!

BobF. you take the words out of my mouth: Krauthammer urging POS Obama to be "honest fortright and courageous"! Bwhahahahaha! You might as well urge an elephant to fly!

The only decisions the community organizer can make relate to spending tax money. One of obama's thoughts is to pay off the Taliban not to fight us. That's one of the Chicago ways. The Taliban are not a Chicago gang. obama is hoping Mr Teleprompter comes up with a solution soon.

The Navy men in this picture look just so "Thrilled" to be in their "spot" for Osambo.
Especially the poor sailor to the rear and behind Obama's right. He is either asleep or praying that Osambo go away (POOF).
The black guy to Obamas left looks like he thinking, "Oh G_d, how can he pretend to be black? He is like Michael Jackson...neither white, nor black." He is his own RACE.
The rest of the sailors look distressed/bored. Good thing it was the Navy and not the Marines. A good Marine would kill Obama's ass. I can only pray that one will.

Krauthammer was interviewed by der spiegel recently. He rips Obama pretty good in that piece. Today on the talk radio shows, I'm hearing marketplace takeover chatter from Soros and Barney Frank. Everyday there is such a barrage of communist ideas coming at us that I can't keep up with it all. And our poor troops in Afghanistan are nothing more than a political football. What I liked about Nixon was that he was a do-er. He may not have always made the right decision, but he made decisions. North VN wouldn't come back to the peace talks, ok, eat some more bombs until you change your mind. In an interview done in the 80's he said the thing he regretted most in his Presidency was not bombing North VN when he first took office.
Obama has never held a real job. He's spent his entire career gaming the system. It's all he knows.

BobF, yes, Obama would probably choke
if he even had to say those words.
Posted by: Wild Thing at October 28, 2009 05:49 PM
Anonymous, exactly that is their mantra.
Posted by: Wild Thing at October 28, 2009 05:54 PM
Lynn, you said it. This is exactly what
Obama wants. He wants this war to fail and
then blame Bush and our military too.
Posted by: Wild Thing at October 28, 2009 05:56 PM
Jack, you are so right.
"Progressive and Liberalism my ass, it's Communism!!!"

Tom, I agree, he is doing that.
