Obama Says Slavery's Past Should Be Taught in United States
WASHINGTON
President Obama says slavery is a terrible part of the United States' history and should be taught in a way that connects that past cruelty to current events, such as the genocide in Darfur.
During an interview with CNN while traveling in Ghana, Obama compared the legacy of slavery to the history of the Holocaust. He said both are horrible historical points that cannot be ignored and that their lessons must not be forgotten.
"I think it's important that the way we think about it and the way it's taught is not one in which there's simply a victim and a victimizer. And that's the end of the story," Obama said at Cape Coast Castle, a West African site where traders once shipped slaves to the New World.
Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their daughters visited the slave trading post on Saturday at the end of a trip that took them to Russia, Italy and Ghana. It was the first trip to sub-Saharan Africa for America's first black president.
"I think the way it has to be thought about, the reason it's relevant, is because whether it's what's happening in Darfur or what's happening in the Congo or what's happening in too many places around the world, you know, the capacity for cruelty still exists," Obama said.
Wild Thing's comment.........
Blacks were not just slaves, but slavemasters and sellers of slaves.
How about having American History accurately taught in schools as it happened. How about the Founding Father's thought process to come up with the Constitution. How about how the Founding Father's thoughts were about a small national government. I would like to hear from Obama where it says in the Constitution that we the people are to own private industry, GM, Chrysler, the banks, et al. How about the rule of law that says "empathy" plays no part in judicial proceedings?

Most slaves from Africa were sold into slavery by their tribal elders and chiefs. Weren't Obama's ancestors tribal elders and chiefs?

How about slavery today being taught in the schools as current events.
Officially, slavery has long been abolished in Mauritania, but the law has never been enforced and there are an estimated 600,000 slaves, almost one in five of the country's 3.2 million people, almost 150 years since the American civil war.
Change will come too late to heal Mrs Sayed's ruined life. But she knows that victory for Mr Boulkheir could transform the future for the daughter and grandchildren whom she had to leave behind in captivity when she finally summoned the courage to escape.
A black African of Mauritania's Haratine caste, she was born into slavery about 40 years ago - she is illiterate and has only a hazy idea of time - and grew up as the property of an Arabic-speaking Berber family, in an oasis town deep in the desert.
Screw Obama.

"...the capacity for cruelty still exists," Obama said. Then he proceeded to trash his 'own' country.
The founding fathers didn't deal with the issue because it was an existing part of the country or colonies at that time. If democrats are looking for someone to blame, and they usually are, blame King George, he was instrumental in keeping this system in place. The Colonies were part of Britain and followed their rule.
After the War for Independance, it took another 85 years to come to terms with the slavery question. In a war that cost 640,000 American lives, to end it. Quite a hefty price, for White America to pay, who are always considered biggots and racists by the champions of the former slaves, the democrats. Yet because of the democrats, the Blacks are worse off today than they were, say 50 years ago, before all the help from the democrats. But their programs never seem to quite accomplish the job they claim. So it is another reason to keep electing democrats, so they can keep working on the problem. The democrats claim to have accomplished so much in race relations, yet, the problem is still exist. The democrats are the only party who never quite seem to EVER solve a problem.
Yet when you look at history, you will find that it was the democrats who wanted to sue for peace with the South to end the war, and let the slave issue work itself out. In other words Slavery would still exist even after the 1864 election had the democrats won and the country would have been severed through the center into two parts. I guess thats why Biden always comes up with his partitioning plan for all these third world countrys.
It was White Republicans who lead the Civil Rights issue in Congress and got it passed, not democrats. LBJ himself said, after signing the Civil Rights act of 1965, he feard all he had done was given the South to the Republicans. That was about the only thing a democrat has ever gotten right.
So what part of the 'Slave's history' are we really going to teach in school. The democrat version or the truth.

This is what the treaching of Revisionist History in our schools leads to.
Posted by: SEAN. at July 14, 2009 10:55 AM
obama is not going to be truthful about history or anything else. He could care less about lower caste Blacks except for their vote. LBJ, in signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, told several colleagues, "I will have these ni--ers voting Democrat for the next 200 years".
There will never be mention of the Black slave traders or the Black slave owners. Or the mention that White people died to free the slaves. Future generations will be told how bad the White man is, how bad America is and how great people like Jesse Jackson and Maxine Waters were.

They just always so frequently forget that it was their own people who sold them into slavery and it was a white man who freed them. And they think that just because your skin is pale, that you could not imagine what they have gone through. Wanna bet? My great grandmother was the great grand daughter of slaves, who's child married a white man in Vermont. (my brother found we have African DNA in our blood from Northern Africa) And I have Welsh ancestors who were ruddy and dark enough (from working in the Welsh coal mines) to have been mistaken as black in North Carolina. I cannot stand the uppityness of these people who keep extending their hands out, wanting more and more that we can't afford to pay anymore. I'm sorry, but the bank vault is empty, there is no more. The best social program is a job. Do anything. Flip burgers, do data entry, clean houses, babysit and walk dogs and mow lawns. Do something!

Too bad the Bible was thrown out of our public school classrooms, and God was too in 1964!

I have to point out that Obama is not much of a black. His father was three-quarters Arab that Obama's one eighth black ancestry came only as trade goods for the entertainment of his Arab Slaver Great Great grandfather is something that I can forgive. The Gore family is rumored to have gotten their black hair from an Indian squaw that was commerce around 1830 for whiskey and guns.

BobF., I am not sure, he better learn
his real history before he pushes this
if the truth gets out it will hurt the
dem vote. heh heh They will learn how
the dems only use blacks.

Bob A., thanks for sharing that.

Mark, thank you so much for all of that.
"It was White Republicans who lead the Civil Rights issue in Congress and got it passed, not democrats."
This is what I would like to know too.
"So what part of the 'Slave's history' are we really going to teach in school. The democrat version or the truth."

SEAN, I agree, I don't remember being
taught lies about history like they
are now. But that was a long time ago.
Posted by: Wild Thing at July 14, 2009 10:42 PM
Tom, your right and thanks for that
information.
I have a feeling Obama didn't even
mean what he said. It is just a feeling
but he seems to be only interested in
his own history and not that of anyone
else.

Lynn, wsell said!!!!
That would make an awesome sticker.
"The best social program is a job."

Darth, your right and there lies one of
the main reasons so much of this has
been happening, God is missing from so
much in our country.
Posted by: Wild Thing at July 14, 2009 10:51 PM
Avitar, thank you, I wish this would have
been pointed out more during the campaign.
If Clarence Thomas was as little black as
Obama is that sure would have been pointed
out. And most blacks hated Thomas, I guess
the person has to be a far leftie to be
accepted.
Posted by: Wild Thing at July 14, 2009 10:54 PM
Hi avitar,
1/8 black would make Obama an Octoroon and not a Mulatto. Thanks for pointing that out.
I guess his kid's might be one of the below:
Mestee:
Mustee:
Metisse:
They all mean the same.
