Hope And Change — But Not For Iran

Millions of Iranians take to the streets to defy a theocratic dictatorship that, among its other finer qualities, is a self-declared enemy of America and the tolerance and liberties it represents. The demonstrators are fighting on their own, but they await just a word that America is on their side.
And what do they hear from the president of the United States? Silence. Then, worse. Three days in, the president makes clear his policy: continued "dialogue" with their clerical masters.
Dialogue with a regime that is breaking heads, shooting demonstrators, expelling journalists, arresting activists. Engagement with — which inevitably confers legitimacy upon — leaders elected in a process that begins as a sham (only four handpicked candidates permitted out of 476) and ends in overt rigging.
Then, after treating this popular revolution as an inconvenience to the real business of Obama-Khamenei negotiations, the president speaks favorably of "some initial reaction from the Supreme Leader that indicates he understands the Iranian people have deep concerns about the election."
Where to begin? "Supreme Leader"? Note the abject solicitousness with which the American president confers this honorific on a clerical dictator who, even as his minions attack demonstrators, offers to examine some returns in some electoral districts — a farcical fix that will do nothing to alter the fraudulence of the election.
Moreover, this incipient revolution is no longer about the election.
Obama totally misses the point. The election allowed the political space and provided the spark for the eruption of anti-regime fervor that has been simmering for years and awaiting its moment. But people aren't dying in the street because they want a recount of hanging chads in suburban Isfahan.
They want to bring down the tyrannical, misogynist, corrupt theocracy that has imposed itself with the very baton-wielding goons that today attack the demonstrators.
This started out about election fraud. But like all revolutions, it has far outgrown its origins. What's at stake now is the very legitimacy of this regime — and the future of the entire Middle East.
This revolution will end either as a Tiananmen (a hot Tiananmen with massive and bloody repression or a cold Tiananmen with a finer mix of brutality and co-optation) or as a true revolution that brings down the Islamic Republic.
The latter is improbable but, for the first time in 30 years, not impossible. Imagine the repercussions. It would mark a decisive blow to Islamist radicalism, of which Iran today is not just standard-bearer and model, but financier and arms supplier. It would do to Islamism what the collapse of the Soviet Union did to communism — leave it forever spent and discredited.
In the region, it would launch a second Arab spring. The first in 2005 — the expulsion of Syria from Lebanon, first elections in Iraq and early liberalization in the Gulf states and Egypt — was aborted by a fierce counterattack from the forces of repression and reaction, led and funded by Iran.
Now, with Hezbollah having lost elections in Lebanon and Iraq establishing institutions of a young democracy, the fall of the Islamist dictatorship in Iran would have an electric and contagious effect.
The exception — Iraq and Lebanon — becomes the rule. Democracy becomes the wave. Syria becomes isolated; Hezbollah and Hamas, patronless. The entire trajectory of the region is reversed.
All hangs in the balance. The Khamenei regime is deciding whether to do a Tiananmen. And what side is the Obama administration taking? None. Except for the desire that this "vigorous debate" (press secretary Robert Gibbs' disgraceful euphemism) over election "irregularities" not stand in the way of U.S.-Iranian engagement on nuclear weapons.
Even from the narrow perspective of the nuclear issue, the administration's geopolitical calculus is absurd. There is zero chance that any such talks will denuclearize Iran. On Monday, Ahmadinejad declared yet again that the nuclear "file is shut, forever."
The only hope for a resolution of the nuclear question is regime change, which (if the successor regime were as moderate as pre-Khomeini Iran) might either stop the program, or make it manageable and nonthreatening.
That's our fundamental interest. And our fundamental values demand that we stand with demonstrators opposing a regime that is the antithesis of all we believe.
And where is our president? Afraid of "meddling." Afraid to take sides between the head-breaking, women-shackling exporters of terror — and the people in the street yearning to breathe free. This from a president who fancies himself the restorer of America's moral standing in the world.
This is another young Iranian women ( not the one seen above in this post ) she publicly supported presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi long before this week's riots. This woman attended a campaign rally in Tehran on May 23.

You think Obama just might think it would be hypocritical to call for freedom in Iran while he's eroding freedoms in America. Naw that would take someone with a soul that just might give him some kind of conscience.
Is it possible Obama doesn’t want to call the mullahs on their stolen election because he did some elction stealing and ballot-stuffing himself, via the agents of ACORN?
As is typical with Hussein Obama, there is something here that affects HIM. Perhaps his big campaign donor, the King of Saudi Arabia, has told him to stay out of it...or to support Amadinejad. But I doubt it. Saudi Arabia despises the current Iranian regime as much as anyone. At least from all we have read in the past.
Obama’s refusal to support the Iranian protesters is despicable and shameful.

He hates Jews and he would have to work hard to make me think otherwise. He was able to speak out against Israel but he can't speak out and tell Iran to let the votes be counted to listen to the people or what an ourtage all of this is. ........nope.

As far as I am concerned, obama's weak assed response to the uprising in Iran makes him an accessory to murder. May his ass rot in hell.
obama is a muslim and considers himself a mullah on a par with those mullahs ruling Iran. He wishes and is working toward having the absolute power the Iranian mullahs have. We are going to have to have our own revolution right here in America.
Charles Krauthammer is one of my favorite Americans. I hope he can keep on writing and contributing to the opposition to the obamanation.

I'm a Charles fan as well. And he's fair. If OZero deserves being agreed with, he'll do it. But since Voting Present isn't what Charles agrees is proper ethics, he'll put the hammer to him...and it makes me feel good to see someone else gets what's wrong with this picture and can articulate it so that others can understand.
Lot to be learned from Charles.

Thank you WT and Mark. What is happening inside Iran could happen here, if you don't believe it, the signs are there, I'm not into denial of self delusions, it's something to think about.
If it's Obama's goal to compare himself as an equal or superior to any of the great presidents or world leaders, pick any who have preceded him, he doesn't measure up, never will. He wouldn't even make a good carbuncle on Jimmy Carter's ass let alone the collective ass of all humanity.

Not enough people get to see the results of what and who they did or didn't vote for. Look into those eyes again. I have always liked Charles Krauthammer, this is one of the few men in the media who does his homework, presents his findings and lays the blame at the feet of the offender, he's an American, not a partisan hack. If he wants to run for office he has my support hands down.
I have questions, the media is focused intently on Iran and the turmoil, they don't have any of their reporters inside, not a bad thing as for as getting at the truth is concerned, but just where is I'm A Nut Job? Like Obama, he has been conspicuous by his absence, coincidentally with the uprising 49 were killed in a mosque after noon prayers in Taza, Northern Iraq on Saturday. Arabs and Kurds, or Iranians Against Kurds? It's a good cover for Iran to subvert and agitate the instability as US forces exfiltrate Irag. It also takes the focus off N Korea and the potential shipments of missiles to Iran or more yellow cake.

I was listening and watching live feeds from Cell phones on twitter, constantly hearing gunshots. The snipers are on the rooftops and picking their targets at random. The girl above was shot in the chest, witnesses said it blew out her chest, two friends caught her and laid her on the ground, when she died.
This bastard obama, wants to appease the mullahs, he claims, to stand up for the rights of the people of Iran and to stop the violence. yet he wants to silence the Talk show hosts in America because they are "Right Wing Whackos" and the Tea Party s he wants to shut them down too, why they disagree with him. Sounds like Iran.
When is this going to happen here. Nobody knows with the nutjob obama, and his leftist agenda. Will it start at a Tea Party or some other protest. Where our goverment is spreading lies about their own target, the CEO's who were targeted by ACORN and the other useless Thugs for the Union.
The death of that girl brought back a flood of memories alright, I haven't seen someone die like that in 42 years. A vivid reminder how fragile life really is.

Something doesn't seem right with that video. When she first lays down and the camera is on her face, it's perfect; no blood, nothing. Then some guy puts his hand over her face and blood is suddenly all over the place. I'm no expert but it looks staged to me. Something like we used to do in MRE's; Major Response Exercises.

Bob F.. I think that if you look again you will see the man trying to stem the blood flow, from the chest of the woman. This leads to blood getting on his hands when he touches his face. Also it is hard to fake the stare of death that is on that woman's face.
