House Republicans Draft Energy Bill With Heavy Focus on Nuclear Power

Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) delivers the Weekly Republican Address on the Republican Energy Plan, The American Energy Act.

House Republicans Draft Energy Bill With Heavy Focus on Nuclear Power

NY Times

House Republicans plan to introduce an energy bill on Wednesday as an alternative to the Democratic plan barreling toward a House vote this month.

The Republican proposal, drafted by a group led by Representative Mike Pence of Indiana, leans heavily on nuclear power, setting a goal of building 100 reactors over the next 20 years. No new nuclear plants have been ordered in the United States since 1978 because of the high cost of construction and uncertainty about regulatory approval.

The bill also provides incentives for increased oil and gas production on public and private lands and offshore. It would also authorize oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, a focus of 30 years of controversy in Congress.

The Republican measure does not include any mandatory cap on emissions of heat-trapping gases, relying instead on nuclear energy, natural gas and renewable fuels like wind, solar and biomass power to reduce production of the gases, which have been linked to global warming.

“This is an alternative that takes us in the direction of energy independence and a clean environment without the national energy tax being offered by the Democrats,” Mr. Pence said.

At forums around the country, he said, people expressed a desire for more energy from domestic sources and concern about rising fuel prices. “A minority in Congress plus the American people equals a majority,” he said.

Republican officials said they were intending to offer the proposal, known as the American Energy Act, as a substitute for the bill sponsored by Representatives Henry A. Waxman of California and Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts, both Democrats.

Mike Pence is one of the good guys, Like we were talking about yesterday and you suggestions were so awesome. Mike is another one I would add to the list of people that have consistantly taken a stand.

Wild Thing's comment..........

More Nuclear plants haven’t been built because of Democrats.

This is exactly what the Republicans need to do, not just say "No", but provide reasonable alternatives to the Socialists.

....Thank you Mark for sending this to me.

I have always been a proponent of nuclear power. While the rest of the world passes us by our people have cow tailed to the likes of Al Gore and are against anything that may help. Our government and regulators are out of control.

If the democrats were serious about the United States being energy independant they would consider all options. Solar, Wind, Geothermal and Nuclear. But by considering Nuclear this would mean a solution to the problem(that is assuming there is a climate problem) but solutions are not what the democrats are about. They are about control not of energy but of our lives and regulating and taxing us to death. Their POWER.

Nuclear Power is the future, Solar, Wind and all these cockamayme alternatives are pie in the sky solutions, that will never happen, they are folly and a waste of taxpayer money.

During the campaign McCain was into this too, his idea of a 'Super battery', the Magic Battery that goes on forever. It doesn't exist, won't exist because it defies the basic law of Conservation of Energy i.e., Power in equals Power out + Losses, Power in = Power out there are no freebies there. Once used it has to be resupplied, recharged and in the case of a battery you will get a little less output than the first time and so on until the battery is useless.

There is no need for this kind of alternative energy, we already have the technology for Nuke Plants to supply all the power and energy we need.

All matter can be converted into energy. A 1kg of mass can be converted into 9 x 10^16 Joules of energy. This is enough energy to power a 100 watt bulb for 28,519,279 years. That is more than 2.8 times the energy produced by the Sun in a year. This is the solution.

The democrats on the other hand will not go for this. The Summary of the Republican proposal is sound, valid and makes sense and the technology is readily available. All we need is a congress that has a spine to use it and to think about the country first for a change instead of their own power.

Amen Mark, it couldn't be stated any clearer. The bottom line is that the Democrats are all about totalitarian control, screw the energy crisis, screw the economic downturn, screw the dependence on energy sources dominated by Islamo-fascist regimes, it's all about total control and doling out everything to those who support and cherish Socialist Fascism. Pence is one of the rare birds in the RINO party that doesn't support in lockstep what the "Democrats" want.
Like you said the Conservation of Energy Law prevails, even Einstein recognized it.

The French have the most Nuclear power around, of all of Europe they are the most energy independent. Westinghouse, one of my former employers, nearly went under due to nuclear fuel commitments behind the Iron Curtain during the '70's energy crisis as a result Westinghouse divested it's appliance division, sold it to White, so it could fund those binding contracts until their contract renewals. We have a naval fleet that's nuclear powered with very few mishaps, proof of nuclear safety, I worked in the nuclear industry before going into the oil side of energy, It was safe as long as I trusted the instruments and paid strict attention at all times, one fatality in 5 years, a contractor fell to his death while crossing a well marked safety barrier.

You said it Mark. The Dems are into power and control. They want to tax and regulate everything and everyone.

This House Republican Bill seems very realistic awould be a real boost to our economy. It also ignores that cap and trade bullshit. My guess is that this bill is Dead on Arrival.

Bob A, sorry, but the term is Kowtow not cow tailed. To Kowtow was a Chinese maneuver that required approaching the ruler of China in a full down belly crawl generally licking the floor.

As I have said before the known nuclear reserves are 3800 years worth and if we begin doing coal to liquid conversion at $50 peer barrel US would not have to import a drop of oil for three centuries based on known reserves but businessmen did most of the exploration their and they stop looking after finding forty years supply.

Bob A., I agree, I remember even as a
kid my Dad talking about how nuclear power
was going to be very important to our
country one day.

Mark, that was excellent thank you so much.

Jack, I wish our country would lead on
this. We have let the enviros run
things for way too long. They want us
back in the caves and jungles.

Posted by: Wild Thing at June 17, 2009 07:07 PM

Tom, yes they will shoot it down. I hope
they get it in the records that it
exists as a way to solve this at least.

Avitar, I have used that expression too and
actually never knew where it came from.Thank
you for telling about it.
