Michelle Obama Serving Food at Miriam's Kitchen

Michelle Obama serves food at Miriam's Kitchen in Washington, March 5, 2009. The kitchen provides meals, case management and housing support to nearly 250 homeless men and women in the city.

Michelle Obama showed up Thursday as a surprise and welcome volunteer at Miriam's Kitchen, a soup kitchen for homeless poor people not far from the White House.

She brought with her some food donated by White House staff. The first lady served up mushroom risotto and broccoli to a long line of homeless men and women during part of her lunch hour and in these photos poses for a picture by one homeless diner obviously excited to be in the first lady's presence.

It doesn't detract from the first lady's generous gesture or the real needs she seeks to highlight to ask two bothersome journalistic questions about these news photos:

If this unidentified meal recipient is too poor to buy his own food, how does he afford a cell phone? And if he is homeless, where do they send the cell phone bills?

Wild Thing's comment.......

LOL that guy with the cell phone! I guess our tax dollars bought it for him.

Photo-op, nothing more. How many minutes did she actually serve food? How long did she spend at the kitchen? How many press people were there to record this for posterity? How many times did Laura Bush do something like this that the media either did not cover or only made as brief a mention as possible of it?

Laura Bush used to show up at Walter Reed Hospital to visit the wounded troops....without photographers.

If Michelle and her husband were truly concerned with helping people wouldn't they help his brother the hut dwelling brother then reach out to others. Just a thought.

....Thank you Mark for sending this to me.

She's all in it for publicity. That homeless guy has a better cell phone than I do. The first couple is extremely in love with themselves, aren't they?

I read that obama's Aunt is facing another deportation hearing. Bush didn't bother deporting her, INS had nothing to do with her...Suddenly, she is going to a deportation hearing. She has been on the dole all the time she has been here, living in Government housing, and no body has bothered with her all this time.

Now Her nephew gets elected president, she even shows up at the Immaculation to celebrate. Now she's facing deportation. All things being equal, if obama granted her citizenship, there wouldn't be a whole lot of complaints, sure it would be favoritism but 'she's family', ok, I can live with that. But this is bizarre...unless...

What does she know that obama doesn't want the rest of the country to know.

How about that skank serving food? Where is her health card? No hair net either, scratch those pubes, serve that food. Nasty is posing just another photo op sham, are those Acorn extras?

Lynn, she sure is, if it was for real that would be different. But like you said it is just publicity.

Mark, I agree so much Bush should have deported her, this slack coming from people in our government is exactly why people get so upset. WE obey the laws and rules etc. and they don't.

You know you made me think of something. I wonder why the media is not pounding on her door to interview her about Obama. I know they are all on his side, but still one would think they would be curious.
