Republicans assailed the measure as too costly — particularly on the heels of a $787 billion stimulus bill that Obama signed last week. But Democrats jabbed back.
From the GOP side, Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas said the legislation was "going to grow the government 8.3 percent ... but the family budget which has to pay for the federal budget only grew at 1.3 percent last year."
The debate occurred one day after Obama told Congress in a prime time television address that he intends to cut deficits in half over the next four years, and one day before he was submitting tax and spending plans for the coming year.
Obama also will seek $634 billion over 10 years as a down payment on health care reform, the start of an effort aimed at providing coverage for an estimated 48 million uninsured people. Achieving that goal could cost much more.

A senior administration official says Obama's budget calls for financing the overhaul by trimming Medicare spending and limiting tax deductions for upper-income earners. Obama also intends to ask lawmakers to approve a new cap-and-trade system of limits and pollution allowances, especially for industries such as utilities with coal burning power plants. The program would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while generating revenue that could help finance other elements of an ambitious agenda that includes health care and education reform.
Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said the bill included at least a dozen earmarks for clients of PMA Group, a lobbying company now at the center of a federal corruption investigation.
"It's simply not responsible to allow a soon-to-be-criminally indicted lobbying firm to win funding, all borrowed, in this bill," he said. No charges have been filed against the firm or its principals, although the company's offices were raided earlier this month, and it has announced plans to disband by the end of the month.
Federal prosecutors are investigating PMA Group's founder and president, Paul Magliochetti, who is a former top aide to Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee that funds defense programs.
In remarks on the House floor, Republican leader John Boehner urged Obama to veto the legislation, citing earmarks.
At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs responded only in general terms whether that was possible.
"There is great concern in this building and by the president about earmarks," Gibbs said. "Without having looked specifically at a piece of legislation, I'm hesitant to throw out that four-letter word, `Veto.'"

The Congress pigs wanted to keep these bills under a trillion $$s as to not alarm the public so they give it to you what they think are in bite sizes.

At the rate he is going, Obama is going to spend America out of existence in about four more weeks. This guy is like a fat kid in a candy store.
Not surprising to see a lobbyist with ties to John Murtha getting on the gravy train. So much of this Democrat appropriated money is going right down the drain of graft. There are more spending bills coming up than I can keep track of. $20M to bring Palestinian "refugees" from Gaza to America and another $900M for Gaza itsself. Nothing like supporting our enemies.

Gibbs - Sheesh!!! Unbelievable that the "Republicans" are party to the Dims mutual admiration society. AIG is at the trough again but not to worry, Congress will take care of their own pension funds, screw the rest of us. Get out those Mexican and Farsi primers, Chinese yuan conversion tables, get your own Quran and join the future of this turd world country.

Hang on it gets worse. Harry Reid told his partner in crime Bingaman to have the GREEN energy bill ready, that is next. Now they are going to hit us where we live. Presently, Electricity cost about 5 cents per Kilowat hour. When this new bill goes through, depending on the source Wind or Solar electricity will increase to 14 cents all the way up to 24 cents per kwh. On the average Utilities bills will rise about 300 % from what they are now.
Now this is the change I expected from this dingbat administration. All because we are not allowed to dig for our own oil. We have the coal but 'bla k obama' said he would bankrupt those companies and he is right on course.

I wish somone would sit Reid and any of the rest of them in front of a full course meal, make them sit there tied up and not able to eat. Tell them they are our country and the meal in front of them is the tremendous amount of oil we have we can be drilling for. Don't let them eat a bit of food until they understand how stupid what THEY are doing is and how they can live without the oil we have just as they can try to live without food. heh heh
