Obama preparing to lift sanctions against Syria
President Barack Obama has decided on a new U.S. ambassador to Syria and is expected to lift sanctions against a nation charged with aiding Al Qaida in Iraq and secretly building a nuclear reactor with North Korean assistance.
Diplomatic sources said Obama, in consultation with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has asked Frederic Hof to become the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since 2005. The sources said Hof, a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Middle East Policy Council, agreed to take the post.
"There will be an announcement very soon," a diplomat said.
The sources said the Obama administration was expected to suspend U.S. sanctions on Syria's military and energy programs.
Syria has been listed by the State Department as among the State Sponsors of Terrorism since December 29, 1979.
The sources said Obama sent emissaries to Syria in September 2008 and pledged that if elected he would reconcile with the regime of President Bashar Assad. After his election victory, they said, Obama sent another message that promised to appoint an ambassador within the first weeks of his administration.
Obama's intention to reconcile with Iran and Syria has been supported by the Democratic majority in Congress.

US lawmakers introduce bill to ease Cuba travel

Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have introduced a bill to permit US citizens unrestricted travel to Cuba, according to the Library of Congress website.
The "Freedom To Travel to Cuba Act," which would overturn the 46-year-old US policy strictly limiting travel to the Caribbean island, will be subject to debate after being referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The bill, introduced by Massachusetts Democrat Bill Delahunt and backed by eight other lawmakers, states that "the President may not regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or legal residents."
Currently US nationals are supposed to request Treasury Department permission to visit Cuba. They are not routinely allowed to spend money in Cuba -- the Americas' only one-party communist state -- creating an effective travel ban.
US President Barack Obama has said he would speak with all foreign leaders in sharp contrast to successive US administrations which have sought to isolate Havana.
But he has offered few details on how far he might be willing to go in reaching out to Cuba.
During his campaign for the presidency, Obama said the Cuba embargo had not helped bring democracy to the island, led by President Raul Castro, 77.
But so far he has said only that he would end some sanctions on Cuban-Americans traveling to the island, and eliminate limits on their remittances to relatives in Cuba.
The neighboring countries do not have full diplomatic relations, and the United States has an economic embargo on Cuba.

So will Cuba become the new Las Vegas? I can see it now, the Democrats flocking to Cuba all on their own Jets like Pelosi has saying it is closer to Washington D.C. and they save on Jet fuel to go there to play in the sun and gamble then to fly to Vegas.

For once, the masquerading idiot may be on to something. This Bill just needs a slight revision to make it a good Bill.......All flights to Cuba are ONE WAY ONLY!!!!
The current restraints have no affect on "O" since he has not proven he is a CITIZEN or LEGAL RESIDENT!!! "the President may not regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or legal residents." He can go there any time he wants to.

Wow, funny you should mention Cuba.
I read the Vegas papers everyday online and just today I saw a local express that concern.
Freakin Democrats and RINO's are on the march and out of control. I'm starting to take the survivalist warnings and advice a little more seriously.

No one should be surprised at the groveling and appeasement offerings of B. Hussein Obama to the Muslim world and Cuba. He and his foreign policy advisors painted a very clear picture of what he would do if elected President. Well, he is President and the selling out of America has begun. Voters were given a choice and they chose wrong.

Yankeemom, yes each day now it looks more and more like that. I miss my Dad,and Nick's Dad too. They both have passed away. Nick said this morning he is glad our Dad's are not seeing what has been happening to our country. I know what he means, it would break their hearts as it does ours.
