Obama says fuel prices will change car habits

Barack Obama said on Saturday Americans would start changing the kinds of cars they drive if gasoline prices continue to climb and said he owned a hybrid vehicle, though he doesn't drive it much.
Obama, an Illinois senator and the front-runner for his party's presidential nomination, has made fighting climate change a key issue of his campaign, and as fuel prices soar, he has repeatedly called on car makers to increase fuel efficiency standards.
Without specifically telling Americans to stop buying gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles, the Illinois senator said higher fuel prices would lead to a shift.
"We've seen that this quarter. People are changing their behavior and we've seen a slump in the sales of SUVs and big trucks and a drastic spike in cars both medium size and small," he told reporters on his campaign plane.
Obama put responsibility on car makers to make vehicles more fuel efficient.
"They've done a better job of investment than they have in the past. There's still more work to do, and the federal government should help them do it," he said.
Obama, who spends most of his time traveling around the country on a plane and in cars driven by his Secret Service agents, does have a car of his own that is environmentally friendly.
"These days I don't drive much," he said. "I bought a hybrid, but we keep it in the garage mostly."

In the near future — used car ads that proclaim the car was: “Previously owned by a politician attempting to get the green vote — mostly kept in the garage”.

Typical liberal thinking. If people want fuel-efficient cars, the free market- not the government- will dictate what the car makers manufacture.

Thanks Mark & WT. Lets look at the real problem, in 2006 the Obama style 'Change' was voted in, since then the economy has hit the crapper. It's a do nothing congress, worse yet it will be a do nothing presidency. Consumer and investor confidence both nationally and abroad are at all time lows. Nobody will invest if their is a likelyhood of government takover of business and oppressive regulations and taxation, we can't tax our way to prosperity and it's a proven fact that we can't become energy independent through conservation. OPEC has screwed the West and we still believe by paying homage to them that they'll help us, the only respect a raghead has is of absolute power and greater strength. Obama has telegraphed his weakness to the world and he wants the United States to be like Gaza, with the masses in turmoil and poverty with him like Arafat, above it all preaching his version of piety.
If you earn it, save it or spend it on what ever you want, including that Hummer and all the fuel you can afford. Most likely that Hummer owner insn't some government bureaucratic beancounter or regulator but an entrepreneur. I've never met a welfare recipient that was able to make a payroll for employees or create meaningful work beyond having someone else caring for their existance.

Anyone remember the gas lines? Car companies went in for the compact and subcompacts more than anything--again to protect the environment. Now they want us to be back in the 1800s before there were automobiles. There is NO scientific evidence that emissions are causing any problems whatsoever. Yes, when the air was more polluted, it was colder. The sun couldn't get through, but now that we've cleaned it up, now it's hotter because more sun is getting through. It's not global warming. It's a reaction to what we've done lately. And has anyone noticed that since Bush didn't sign the Kyoto Principal, the wacko lefties have been pushing this global warming crap down our throats? You can believe me, that if a dummycrap ends up in the White House, it will be signed and we'll be suffering even more than we are now. We have to be very careful about going too far with this. We need to drill in ANWAR and get us off our dependency of foreign oil. Otherwise, get ready to buy a horse and buggy.

To liberal politicians like Obama, global warming amd oil conservation are politicasl tools, not something to really believe in. They mouth the talk, but trample the walk with their own extreme abuse of any conservation methods. Limos and jets to go places to tell the common folk to live simpler.

So now we are going to get a half a 'Vega', this really sucks.

Wait until Obama hears about this. Members of the Brit Parliament say that Brits should be "forced" to carry carbon credit cards when they purchase oil, gas, electricity, or a flight ticket. Watch what happens in England. The island is simply Euro-trashed now, and what happens there spreads here.

The other day someone tried to say this whole gas thign is Bush's fault. I asked her are you aware of enviro's and the dems and how they have literally kept us from drilling for our own oil. She at least let me say something then she just shrugged and didn't respond.
