Muslim elders at an Oxford mosque have said they intend to push ahead with plans to broadcast a call to prayer from a loudspeaker despite fierce opposition.
Local residents have attacked the idea saying it would disrupt the peace and turn the area into a 'Muslim ghetto'.
But the elders said they still intend to seek planning permission to install the loudspeaker.
If granted, they would broadcast a two-minute long call three times a day from the Central Mosque, where up to 700 people gather to worship every Friday.
The idea has gained support from the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev John Pritchard, who last week said those in opposition to the idea should "relax" and "enjoy community diversity".
But residents, who packed out a council meeting last month to signal their outrage, remain set against the plan which they say is an "un-neighbourly intrusion".
They said they would rally to block the proposal when it is submitted to the council in nine months time, when construction on the mosque is complete.
Dr Allan Chapman, 61, who lives near the building, said:
"The response against this has been incredible, we have been indundated with calls ranging from stiff upper lip outrage to sheer screaming fury.
"The universal message is what an utter cheek to inflict this on a non-Muslim area of Oxford. If this application goes forward then a large number of angry people are poised to form an opposition to it."
Dr Chapman added the broadcast is not to comparable to the ringing of church bells because: "They are just a signal. The Muslim call is a theological statement."
Residents have said the main objection is the loud amplification of the broadcast.
Elizabeth Mills, 56, said: "We don't have a problem with the Imam climbing to the top of the minaret and shouting.
"But we object to electronic amplification. The Bishop of Oxford might say it's ok but he doesn't have to listen to it."
Martin Stott, 53, a member of the Oxford Oratory, added: "This is not an anti-Muslim thing, it is more about community cohesion."
A spokesman for the Central Mosque said that sounding the call to prayer is a traditional part of the religion.
Sadar Rana, 68, said: "Building work will take another nine months to a year, it is then that we plan to make an application to the council.
"We want to fix a loudspeak to our minaret to broadcast our call to prayer. We would like to have it three times a day but if that is not accepted, then we would like to have it at least on Fridays.
"We do not need the volume to be loud but we want to have the call in some form because it's our tradition."

Can anyone remember this but didn't the city of Detroit, or somewhere up around there, go thru this same thing? If I remember correctly, the city and courts gave the Muzzies permission for this crap right here in the good ole US of A.
I know this is a serious situation, but the irony of how letting PC rule, and then accepting and even inviting these creep Muslims in their country and ours, and not expecting this kind of thing to happen?? Well heads in the sand anyone!

This is nutz. We are watching the collapse of western civilization, one piece at a time. In the UK it seems to be at a much faster rate than here but the Moslems are right on course to destroy our way of life and culture.
The left keeps making concessions in a desparate hope of appeasement, but the demands keep coming and we keep relenting. We keep backing up again and again. Soon our backs will be against the wall then what ?

Slightly OT, but we went to Bahrain tonight - to an "English pub" [Sherlock Holmes @ the Gulf Hotel: http://www.gulfhotelbahrain.com/gulfhotel_sherlock_holmes.asp] and the number of Saudi cars in the parking lot - and the hordes of men, sitting at the bar or at tables in their thobes [long white dresses] with their ghoutra's [red and white checkered table cloth looking head dressings], drinking Amstel's or Scotch was beyond belief. It is soooo hypocritical - the "holier than thou" attitude these men have the audacity to display - and for them to be sitting there drinking, DURING prayer "call," makes me ill! You should be at the mosque, sticking your fat arses in the air and thumping your heads on the ground when prayer is called!!! But noooo... You're sitting in a bar in Bahrain drinking!!! Yet, the little school kids in the U.S. are getting fed halal meat and the little girls will soon be wearing abeyas. Ooooh. Makes my blood boil.

The religious police have come to the streets of the UK enforcing prayer call, I wonder if the Suricou Raven is heeding the call WT, I doubt she'd get the irony of it all?
There was a time I cared, no more, they voted for Gordon Brown, Tony Blair was to Risque for them. I care about my country and see the same decline here.
We lock up our resources preferring to pay the muzzy pillagers as well as develop their resources for them, market and refine their product then sell it for them, paying for it all in U.S. Dollars. Then we allow them to control the ports then purchase major portions of our stock market.
Watch the market, when oil is up the market is down and vice-versa. With the increased ownership they can use their ports to control where and when the black stuff is delivered and to whom it goes, they will have unfettered control of both ends.
Does anyone believe the decline of the dollar is related to the price of oil that drives the world economy, or is it simply an accident that we are paying twice as much for the energy and the dollar is worth half what it was? Then I look at our own enclave, that has economically died for multiple reasons, and the incessant railings of Komrad Mitt that he'll restore it to it's former glory. BS, they don't want the glory days, there or in any other state, it means a return to hard work, industry, reliance on national resources and a severance from the public teat. We'll know soon enough once president Obama swears in with the Koran.

BT in SA - thank you for your comments here. You are providing us with info, and some confirmation, straight from the horses mouth about the goats ass(Saudi Arabia). Please keep commenting and feeding us pertinent info about the situation in the land of "our ally". I have several friends who have spent time there either in an oil field capacity or in military training of the SA Guard. You echo what they said only you are more updated(is anything in the ME updated or is time stuck in the 7th century?)

When it comes time, and it will, for people in this country to publicly hear loudspeaker Muslim calls to prayer I will know that it is time for us infidels to start praying too as our lives won't be worth shit.

Mark yes and when our backs are up against the wall, I doubt we willget much help from other countries. We have always been the one to ride in on and save everyone. I am proud of that so much, but we need to keep making us strong and not give in like all this is about. sheesh
