The powerful US Senate is likely to witness a bill from Democrat Senator John Sabini, who is pursuing to ensure 'halal food' for Muslim students in schools of the city and the state as well.
"The 'Halal Food Bill' will be placed before the State Senate shortly," John said at a fund-raising meeting in the city on Thursday.
Bangladesh Expatriates in New York organised the programme, where John Sabini also said that he and some other Democrat senators have been trying their best to raise funds from US business community for the cyclone-hit people in Bangladesh.
John Sabini has made a success last year, when he put forward a bill in the senate asking government to keep Eid days free from public examinations for Muslims. The bill has been passed to enact a new law.
District Leader of Democratic Party Mohammad Amunullah and president of American- Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce Gias Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion.

And what about kosher menus pray tell, oh thaty's right.......it's hate the Jews and cater to the Moslems.
This is called liberals appeasing Muslims.
They should go back to a parent packing a lunch for their children and get rid of all this government in schools. When I was a kid we always took our own lunch to school. I remember when they started to have milk at shcool and my Dad said how it wasn't a good idea, because of it being paid for my the government that one day if our government ever wanted to tell teachers what to teach etc. they could simply because of the power they would have from something as simple as providing milk to schools.
If my Dad was alive today he would be outraged by all of this and everything else that has been happening. Moslems prayer rooms, so many things, too many to mention here.

This is tragic.
So my kids, who aren't Muslim, will have to be "offended" by food they don't want?
I'm with Darth--are they going to cater to the Jamaicans and let the kids smoke pot? Or the Japanese and let them eat sushi? Or how about those people who love chitlins? Does anyone know what chitlins are? Very gross.
My 5 years school has decided to go with more whole grain (which is fine), but sometimes they mix the wrong combos together, like BBQ meatball subs with yogurt. Apparently, my kid is allergic to yogurt. It made her very sick for three days after.
No--if it's public school, they should have to eat the school fare.
This nonsense of catering to one group over the other is ridiculous.

This is the future. Like Europe, we are wimping out and catering to a minority group that hates us, but uses us. These Bangladeshis are just another group that won't assimilate. I wonder why people like NY state senator John Sabini work so hard for radical groups making outrageous demands. I demand that muslims in America eat pork chops and hot dogs.
And we keep letting them in! In fact, our government is bringing these groups in and sponsering them, with our tax money.

Do schools have anything to do with 'Readin, 'Ritin', 'Rithmetic anymore? I can't remember the last time that I saw a job requirement that included "ate school supplied Halal food while attending public school."
No wonder the United States is non-competitive in the world marketplace.

If "we" in the U.S. don't wake up PDQ, our daughter's - or grand daughter's - are going to be required to wear abeyas to school!
Nothing says comfort like an abeya! And, safety, too. Surely there's no way that black flowing robes could get caught in playground equipment and end up maiming - or worse - some innocent little girl... Not to worry though. Little boys will be protected from seeing anything "improper" if an accident occurs - because the playground WILL be segregated!!!

Les good point, they spend all their time on this kind of stuff. I guess they will know how to spell Muslim names for food and not how to read a book.

The foreign correspondent who wrote this news item misunderstood State Senator Sabini's remarks. He is considering a bill that would allow New York State to define what constitutes "halal" in order to give consumers at grocery stores and restaurants the same confidence in that label as consumers of "kosher" or "organic" foods do and increase oversight so shoppers don't get cheated or sick. There is no effort to mandate any kind of religious designation in school cafeterias. Additionally, New York's new law that prevents exams during Eid is written to cover all major religions, interpreted most commonly as Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam and Hinduism.
