WASHINGTON (AP) - Teams assigned to make sure foreigners ordered out of the United States actually leave have a backlog of more than 600,000 cases and can't accurately account for the fugitives' whereabouts, the government reported Monday.
The report by the Homeland Security Department's inspector general found that the effectiveness of teams assigned to find the fugitives was hampered by "insufficient detention capacity, limitations of an immigration database and inadequate working space."
Even though more than $204 million was allocated for 52 fugitive operations teams since 2003, a backlog of 623,292 cases existed as of August of 2006, the report said.
The number of illegal immigrants in the United States has been estimated at between 11.5 million and 12 million. About 5.4 percent of them are believed to be "fugitive aliens," those who have failed to leave the country after being ordered out.
The inspector general found there is not enough bed space available to detain such fugitives and that agents are hampered by an inaccurate database. Other factors that limit the teams' effectiveness are insufficient staffing, the report said.
Until the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, attempts to catch such fugitives were mostly carried out by teams not exclusively devoted to the task. After the attacks, an Absconder Apprehension Initiative was created within the Justice Department to find, apprehend and deport such immigrants. When the Homeland Security Department was created in March 2003, it assumed responsibility.
Wild Thing's comment.........
By the crime reports across our country they all here! Rapes, murders, car jacking, abductions, kidnapping for random... the list goes on.
But then our government gives them the OK, and puts the Border Agents in jail and drug dealer illegals are rewarded. sheesh!
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith
becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of
creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming
in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...
There can be NO divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an
American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but ONE flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

We have to remember that it was the Bush Justice Department who put the Border Guards in jail and rewarded the drug runners.
Alberto Gonzales doesn't need to go because he fired 8 lawyers, he needs to go because he went after the Border Guards like a pit bull.

The estimate of only 600,000 'can't find' Illegals seems a tad low, by about 11.4 Million.
In Texas Illegals are allowed 6 arrest before they are REALLY arrested. Last year the Senate called being an illegal is akin to getting a speeding ticket all they do is pay a fine. So how many of us have gotten six speeding tickets without having to go to court, and not lose a license for speeding.
The 'slip and fall' lawyer Johnny Sutton responsible for prosecuting, or should that be Persecution, the two Border agents is now linked to a Sex scandal cover up along with his Compadre Senior Alberto Gonzalez.
I am beginning to believe that we can not trust anybody from either side.
So they say they have lost track of a half a million + illegals, yet they can track a single cow, in any state, in a stall, with Mad Cow disease, with in a half an hour but can't find, ,more accurately, 12 Million Illegals.
This is nothing more that Refried Mexican Bull shit.

We are in two wars, a War against islam and a Culture War. I have mixed feelings about our effort in the islamic war. I have no doubt about our complete failure and surrender in the Culture War.
Our elected leadership and American business at all levels, but especially small business, is encouraging illegal immigration for economic profit. Big business is almost as guilty by pushing for increased quotas of legal hi-tech people they can hire at lower wages while discouraging native American engineers, programmers and other scientific people.
Government, and specifically this President and his Cabinet, especially anger me on illegal immigration as they blatantly lie about it's existence, impact, numbers and their own lack of response.
The proud successful American Culture is taking a drastic turn downward turn as I write. I think it is almost or maybe too late to prevent this disaster. It could have been prevented by action in the last 5 years since 9/11. And, the problem(immigration legal and illegal) is programmed to accelerate.
In my Conservative mind, Jimmy Carter, America's "worst" president in my lifetime(60 yrs), is going to be joined in that outdoor privy cellar by George W. Bush. Jimmy Carter only gave America's Panama Canal away. George Bush gave America away.

Have you ever seen the film A Day Without a Mexican?
I haven't but it kind of writes itself.
They work hard, expect little and you need them.

Bob, I agree with what you said, you are so right. It will be remembered who was in charge and who let this country down when it comes to this.

Mark, yesssss and also I read that even though our country got rid of TB, it has been gone from this country for years and years. That it is now coming back again and it is due to the illegals coming in that have never had vaccines in their country for such things.

Tom your right,we sure are in two seperate wars in our country. How sad and outrages too, the one against Islam is a must, the other one is not, if only laws would be obeyed and PC would not exist. The weakness the good guys have is increasing and it is turning them into just more bad guys. waaaaaaa

Neil, I will agree that many of them do jobs I would not want to do. That really is not what this is about. They are more then welcome to come to our country and do those jobs. But the thing is this.....they are breaking the laws we have the way they enter our country.
My parents and grandparents and others families came here legally...and there in lies one of the HUGE things that is very wrong and should not be allowed to happen.
Then there is also the fact that these illegals have been given favoritism in many things that we as citizens have worked hard to have. Health Insurance, places to live, benefits of all kinds.....these things many times are just handed out to these illegals and the rest of us work hard for a living to provide for these things for ourselves and our families.
The whole thing about this is wrong from the get go.

How do we need them, Neil, to pick grapes, pick lettuce, we don't need them for that what we need is for our congress to grow a SET and stop the Illegal flood of migrant workers and tell Mexico to FO, we are sick and tired of supporting half of your population.
If the government has any guts they would heavily fine these farmers for hiring these Illegals. The second thing the government needs to do is to point out to these worthless farmers, that this is the twentieth century and we have machines that will pick grapes and lettuce and any other crop, no bathroom breaks, lunch breaks or sick days amd it doesn't have to live in a single family dwelling with a dozen other Illegal families.
We had a country once, where the President used to be concerned about its citizens, but no more 'WetBacks' have more rights than a franchised citizens.
Bottom line neil they don't belong here, they are common thieves and should be treated as such. Give them an option, jail or go home.
