Want A License? You Need To Speak English!
Mont. Drivers Would Have to Know English
HELENA, Mont.

State lawmakers are considering a proposal that would require drivers to prove proficiency in English before receiving a license.
Republican Rep. Dennis Himmelberger said the state has an interest in making sure everyone can read road signs and communicate with police.
"I think this is going to become almost inevitable, some type of bill like this," he said.
Himmelberger said his proposal would require examiners to determine if an applicant needs a proficiency test. Examiners would also determine applicants' citizenship and note their home country on the license.
A House committee took no immediate action on the measure Monday.
Jim Reed of the National Conference of State Legislatures said he was unaware of any other state that requires an English proficiency test. "Some states require that drivers' tests be given only in English", he said.
Wild Thing's comment.......
If I moved to another country and planned to live there, any country that does not have English as their primary language. France, Italy, whatever just for my own sake I would want to learn the language of that country.

Isn't there a saying that goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do?"
I'd have to learn their language if I moved there--seems only fair they should learn ours.
My ancestors (pre colonial immigrants) had to learn from Gaelic, Cymru (Welsh), Catalan and German, but they did it.
Kudos to Montana!

It only makes sense when you go to another country you try to speak to them in their language afterall it is there country and they speak their language. I would think it would be common courtesy. Then why is it do we always have to bend over backwards to accomodate people especially Illegal Immigrants and learn their language in our country. Makes no sense, to me.
I was raised in Buffalo, New York, and Canada is our neighbor to the North and whenever we went to Canada we always tried to learn Canadien..Ehh ?
It is a shame we have to make all the adjustments in our own home.

I was stationed in Montana for 4 years (92-96)and loved it. Montanans are fiercely independent and despise federal government intervention into what they consider their own affairs. When we had the national 55 mph speed limit, the fine in Montana for exceeding the speed limit was $5...five dollars...for whatever speed you were traveling. I kid you not. You paid the cop right on the spot; no marks on your license, no insurance company notification. Basically, people there don't care what you do as long as you don't harm or bother others.

If Montana adopts this law, that will be great. I believe we have essentially lost the battle of immigration. It can only be estimated how many illegals have slipped into America, but I would at least double the govt's estimate to 20-30 million.
The annual, growing legal quota alone is enough to cause problems. Supposedly at about a million a year, the "special" cases probably add to that.
The politicians at the federal level have sold the American culture down the drain. Part of it is to bring in bodies to feed their Social Security Ponzi scheme(and other entitlement programs), part of it is economic look good (cheap labor costs) and part of it is for future voters.
A number of local municipalities are now trying to fight the illegal immigration tsunami, but find it difficult to do so. There are too many illegals and they have some powerful racist organizations with lots of money to wage intense court fights. The Federal govt does nothing to help the locals and in fact, also sides against the locals usually.
Bush had the greatest opportunity in the world to stop illegal immigration and reduce legal quotas after 9-11. He blew it, purposefully. I despise Jimmy Carter and will still consider him the worst President. Jimmy gave away the American owned Panama canal.
But George Bush may have given away America!

Tom, yes and I sure hope they do adopt the law. Maybe and I am saying this with a tiny bit of hope left.....maybe other States will do the same kind of thing.
